Taylor was born in Loudoun County, Va., September 3d, 1838, and came to Baltimore November 6th, 1879, to establish a General Agency for the Provident Life & Trust Company of Philadelphia. Soon after his arrival he was elected a member of the Board of Trustees of the Maryland State Temperance Alliance. William Daniel, the President, organized the Alliance in 1873. Mr. Taylor became an active member, speaking in many counties of the State and in Baltimore City on the subject of local option, which was the watchword of the Alliance. He made his first address on temperance before a club in Coatesville, Pa., on December 31st, 1865, and from that time has been a most ardent and active worker in the temperance cause. Mr. Taylor is Vice-President of the Anti-Saloon League of Maryland, President of the Maryland State Temperance Alliance of Baltimore City, Incorporated, Chairman of the Committee on Co-operation with the Anti-Saloon League of the Baltimore Yearly Meeting of Friends, and Chairman of the Committee on Temperance of the Baltimore Monthly Meeting of Friends. By direction of the Anti-Saloon League of Maryland a number of his addresses, and extracts from same, etc., have been collected and published in this pamphlet, with the hope that it might aid in some degree in pressing forward the great temperance cause, which has been so largely a part of Mr. Taylor's life work in connection with his regular business. As a literary pro duction, he is not insensible of its imperfections but he trusts it will readily be conceded that many of its delineations are true to the life. The Poem, it will be perceived, is conducted through out under the figure of personification - the Hygean nymph, or goddess of Temperance being made the heroine of the play and the six reformed Baltimoreans and Father Mathew, the principal actors on the stage. The form and measure of the verse are occasionally changed for the sake of enlivening the scenery, and of avoiding too much monotony. The Poem, the Ballad, and the Song, were all indited by the spirit of moral sua sion - alias brotherly love and kindness but if any there are, who like the spirit of legal suasion better, the author would not prohibit, .if he could, the enjoyment of their predilections. In a performance like the present. An attempt to adapt it to every os pacity were vain; and to please the fastidious taste of every carping critic were equally so. However unfavorably it may be scanned, he thinks it possesses one redeeming quality - the pu rity of its aim to do good and with a fervent desire that this little adventurer may serve, in some degree, to reclaim the wan dering; to establish the wavering to cheer the desponding and to accelerate the grand march of moral reform, it is humbly inscribed to Freedom's friends and mine. It is peculiarly fit that young men should unite for the pro motion of temperance, because they themselves are most ex posed, if not to the confirmed vice of intemperance, at least to that which too surely induces it. The seeds of vice, as well as of virtue, can be and are planted in youth. And there are many circumstances which expose the young man, more than any other, to dangerous excesses. Even the best feelings of his nature, and the most attractive traits of his character, are eas ily trained by abuse to be the ministers of his ruin. Expe ricuce reads us a melancholy lesson on this subject, as it points out the numerous individuals who have passed from what is mildly termed a wild boyhood to a wretched age. They began in joviality, and ended in destruction. But the story need not be told. We have only to look round among ourselves, and in view of the attractive temptations to excess with which youth is beset, and of the comparatively frail ar mor by which it is protected, we shall be convinced that of all societies for the promotion of temperance, the most im portant, so far certainly as the members are concerned, are those of young men. But in a free government it is not 'so. Here, every citizen, at regular periods, bears to the omnipotent ballot-box his full portion of the sovereignty. Here the voice of the most humble is heard in all our councils. The direct tendency of poverty, ignorance and moral degradation is to subject this tremendous power of the multitude to the will of the few; and to throw the direction of our public affairs into the hands of artful and designing demagogues. Intemperance is in this way exerting a fearful control in our country, by destroying that balance of influence which is founded on property, as well as that healthful mental equality, which is so essential to a self-ruled people. Indeed, so great are the political evils already effected by this degrading vice, that the true lover of his country can but entertain painful apprehensions for the future fate of this Republic. Anatomists nave paid the highest encomiums upon the physical organization of man, and echoed the declaration of Holy Writ, that it was very good. If we could dissect the moral constitution, and unfolding all its wonderful arrangements, exhibit its mysterious workings in their countless relations, we would doubtless break forth, with pious Galen, in hymns of wonder and admiration, to its Great Author; or exclaim with all the rapturous fervor of Israel's inspired Minstrel: "I will praise thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made!" But although our complete moral structure is removed from our actual vision, and all that we can know of its organization is from its effects, together with a few bold, and striking phenomena, - we know enough, with the assistance of analogy, to assert that there are certain primary parts, which, from their intimate relation with our well being, and moral life, we term vital, - prominent among which is the virtue of Temperance. Used in its primitive signification temperance was synonymous with moderation, and as such was the keystone of all the virtues; for it was the essential condition under which each virtue could exist, or manifest itself lawfully.
