Book excerpt: The Austrian excavations over the past thirty years at the Tell el-Daba site have revealed that it is by far the largest and the oldest Middle Bronze Age site in the Eastern Delta. Beginning in 1966 and resumed after a break between 1970 and 1974, some fifty excavation and research seasons have led to the accumulation of an enormous amount of material dating from the Twelfth Dynasty to the Late New Kingdom. Most of the investigated strata belong to the Late Middle Kingdom and the Hyksos Period. The wealth of material finds that have been gained from this site is legendary, not least amongst these are the ceramics, which are analysed in this study. The book begins with a general introduction listing the scope of the publication and continues with clay materials, vessel terminology, the various parts of the vessels and descriptive abbreviations. Section II deals with the pottery from the Late Middle Kingdom to the beginning of the Hyksos Period and comprises a general corpus of Egyptian and imported Levantine pottery from the time of the Late Twelfth and Thirteenth Dynasties. The volume presents the first detailed discussion of the co-existence between the culture of Ancient Egypt during the Late Middle Kingdom and the Second Intermediate Period with the Syro-Palestinian Middle Bronze Age culture. Section III contains an analysis of the Hyksos pottery that developed in the North-Eastern Delta from a explicitly localized blending of Egyptian and Middle Bronze Age traditions. Outside of the Memphis-Fayum region, and, to a lesser extent, Elephantine, pottery of the Second Intermediate Period is but poorly known, thus the publication of this material is a distinct addition to our knowledge of the regional styles that developed during this period. In both sections all the vessels are grouped typologically, thus allowing the reader a quick overview of how certain forms develop over time, the more so since they are all clearly illustrated on a user-friendly scale.

Názory a výsledky přírodních věd a tradiční archeologie se neshodují a jejich argumentace umísťují událost od poloviny 17. století až po konec 16. století před Kr., výjimečně i později. Práce analyzuje jednotlivé argumenty i metodologické přístupy a snaží se odpovědět na otázku neshody jednotlivých přístupů. Tzv. mínojská erupce (nebo santorinská katastrofa) ovlivnila nejenom životy lidí ve velmi širokém regionu, ale také globální klima. Jedná se tedy o klíčovou událost pozdní doby bronzové. Její přesné datování umožní synchronizaci regionálních chronologických systémů mediteránních a evropských regionů a tvorbu přesného časového rámce, který je nutností pro další řešení kauzálních otázek historie doby bronzové.

Book excerpt: This study presents a revised view of Egyptian foreign relations in the eastern Mediterranean during the Old Kingdom (3rd-6th Dynasties) based on an extensive analysis of old and new archaeological data, and its relationship to the well-known textual sources. The material demonstrates that while Egypt's most important relationships were with Byblos and the Lebanese coast generally, it was an active participant in the geo-political and economic affairs of the Levant throughout much of the third millennium BCE. The archaeological data shows that the foundation of these relationships was established at the beginning of the Early Dynastic Period and essentially continued until the end of the 6th Dynasty with ebbs, flows and changes of geographical and political emphasis. It is argued that, despite the paucity of textual data, the 4th Dynasty represents the apogee of Egypt's engagement in the region, a time when the centralised state was at the height of its power and control of human and economic capital. More broadly, this study shows that Egyptian interaction in the eastern Mediterranean fits the pattern of state-to-state contact between ruling elites which was underpinned by official expeditions engaged in gift and commodity exchange, diplomatic endeavours and military incursions.

Book excerpt: This volume attempts to present a comprehensive account of the historical developments in Cyprus during the period of the production of White Slip Wares (ca 1580-1180 BC). Using the Kitchen chronology for the Egyptian New Kingdom, which commenced in 1540 BC, the study emphasizes the importance of archaeological records and how context analysis allows more precision in a relative chronology. This period witnessed the emergence of Cyprus into the political and economic interaction of the East Mediterranean. With special focus on White Slip pottery, the historical events outlined herein demonstrate the growth of Cyprus into a vibrant, independent society from the early 16th century BC into the 12th century BC. Throughout this period, Cyprus developed trade, cultural as well as "diplomatic" relations with the most powerful kingdoms of the surrounding area. A focal point of the study is the role of Cypriot wares - especially White Slip, Base-ring and Red Lustrous Wheel-made - on the island itself as well as in other places. A major role is given to White Slip as it is considered a chronological beacon in the analysis of events during the Late Bronze Age, a time when there are few historical references to the island and its people. Comprising eight chapters, this comprehensive analysis of Cyprus's material culture is accompanied by a historical account in which the period in Cyprus from 1580-1180 BC is divided into seven chronological periods based on Astrom's original chronology. The comprehensive historical discussion in Chapter VII seeks to depict the interactions between Cyprus and the surrounding cultures during this period. The interpretation of the evidence shows that the island's leaders were skilful in achieving a balance between the interests of these various civilizations, which included the Minoan and Mycenaean from the Aegean, the Canaanite groups, the Hittite Empire, and of course the Egyptians. The evidence shows that independent Late Bronze Age Cyprus established extensive trade and diplomatic links with these societies - notwithstanding the various conflicts among them. The Cypriots managed this within the complex and changing interrelationships between the empires during these very turbulent times. In so doing, Late Bronze Age Cyprus managed to develop the creative skills of its people - this especially reflected in the wide range of its ceramic wares (such as White Slip) as well as their extensive production and distribution to many lands.

Book excerpt: This collection of studies on palaces in Ancient Egypt is the result of a conference organised by the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the University of Wurzburg and the Egypt Exploration Society from 12th to 14th of June 2013 in London. The result is a compilation of information - archaeological and textual - one can resort to in order to develop strategies to understand architectural and functional variations and recognise schemes of building canons for palaces in Ancient Egypt. In addition, the understanding of Ancient Egyptian palaces is amplified with specialised studies regarding architectural and administrative terminology. The combined evidence shows that there was indeed a variability in function, in architecture and in the physical situation of palaces in Ancient Egypt. Besides a common space program such as the succession of courtyard, portico, vestibule, throne room and the intimate part of the palace, one may observe a variability of the number of aisles or of columns present as well as in the thickness of walls. This fact points to hierarchical rules concerning the importance of the building. As the architecture is often preserved only in its foundations, it is important to learn what kind of walls were load-bearing, what the size of division walls is and which kind of walls once carried columns. All these first observations have to undergo an evaluation process before one can think of discovering a building canon. A general introducing section is followed by contributions covering Ancient Egyptian palaces from Predynastic times until the New Kingdom. More contributions on the subject will follow in the second volume, which will deal mainly with Ancient Near Eastern Palaces as outcome of a palace workshop at the 10th ICAANE, held in 2016 in Vienna. Together, these two volumes will contribute to a better understanding of the architectural canon and diversity of palaces in Ancient Egypt and the difference in concept to their Ancient Oriental counterparts. ce from SAV1 North underlines the important role Sai plays in understanding settlement patterns in New Kingdom Nubia.
