Book Perspectives on Tsunami Hazard Reduction Observations Theory and Planning

Download or read book Perspectives on Tsunami Hazard Reduction Observations Theory and Planning written by Gerald T. Hebenstreit and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The promontory of Gargano in the southern Adriatic Sea represents one of the most interesting Italian coastal zones subjected to tsunami hazard. Figure la gives the geographical map of Italy; with a box embracing the region of Gargano; details of that region are in turn sketched in Figure lb. Because of the incompleteness of the earthquake and tsunami catalogues, no reports on tsunamis in this area are available prior to 1600 AD. The Gargano events have been recently revised in order to establish their reliability and to attain the phenomenological reconstruction of the tsunamis (Guidoboni and Tinti, 1987 and 1988; Tinti et. al. , 1995). This work fits the general purpose of assessing tsunami hazard along the Italian coasts and represents a continuation of a previous study, where the first quantitative description of the 1627 tsunami from a numerical modeling viewpoint was performed (Tinti and Piatanesi, 1996). The earthquake took place on 30 July 1627 about mid-day and was followed by four large aftershocks. It claimed more than 5,000 victims and destroyed completely numerous villages in the northern Gargano area, with the most severe damage located between S. Severo and Lesina. The earthquake excited a tsunami with the most impressive effects in proximity of the Lesina Lake where the most reliable contemporary chronicles report about an initial sea water withdrawal of about 2 miles and a subsequent penetration inland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seafloor investigation has long been a feature of not only seismology but also of acoustics. Indeed it was acoustics that produced depth sounders, giving us the first capability of producing both global and local maps of the seafloor. Subsequently, better instrumentation and techniques led to a clearer, more quantitative picture of the seabed itself, which stimulated new hypotheses such as seafloor spreading through the availability of more reliable data on sediment thickness over ocean basins and other bottom features. Geologists and geophysicists have used both acoustic and seismic methods to study the seabed by considering the propagation of signals arising from both natural seismic events and man-made impulsive sources. Although significant advances have been made in instrumentation, such as long towed geophysical arrays, ai r guns and ocean bot tom seismometers, the pic ture of the seafloor is still far from complete. Underwater acoustics concerns itself today with the phenomena of propagation and noise at frequencies and ranges that require an understanding of acoustic interaction at both of its boundaries, the sea surface and seafloor, over depths ranging from tens to thousands of meters. Much of the earlier higher frequency (>1 kHz) work included the characterization of the seafloor in regimes of reflection coefficients which were empirically derived from surveys. The results of these studies met with only limited success, confined as they were to those areas where survey data existed and lacking a physical understanding of the processes of reflection and scattering.

Book Seismic Detection and Discrimination Using Ocean Bottom Seismographs

Download or read book Seismic Detection and Discrimination Using Ocean Bottom Seismographs written by J. A. Oecutt and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have developed a model for generating seismic noise at the sea floor which will enable us to extrapolate measurements made at seafloor with ocean bottom seismographs to depths within the underlying sediment and basement. This physical model is consistent with seafloor noise measurements made during the past decade and largely discounts the hypothesis that noise is generated at the seafloor by current motion inducing instrument 'rocking' through mechanisms such as vortex shedding. Although we have never been able to demonstrate a correlation between bottom currents and seismic noise on the seafloor, there is a definite correlation between seafloor noise and the general weather in the vicinity of the seismographs using data from a DARPA-sponsored experiment using Marine Seismic Systeem (MSS), a vertical-component, digitally-recording, short-period seismograph system which was part of the borehole instrumentation of Deep Sea Drilling Project 78B. The instrument package rested unclamped in Hole 395 A, 517 meters within basement rock. Reliable estimates of microseismic noise levels were obtained between 0.16 and 2.2 Hz. The observed microseismic noise was quasi-stationary on the time scale of one hour, but not ten. If the relationship observed between noise at and below the seafloor during Leg 78B is a general one, the range of ocean bottom levels implies that borehole noise levels could approach those at quiet continental sites.
