Book Technology and the Making of The Netherlands

Download or read book Technology and the Making of The Netherlands written by J. W. Schot and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers both an account of twentieth-century technology in the Netherlands and a view of Dutch history through the lens of technology. It describes the trajectory of modernization through technology in certain characteristically Dutch contexts--including the omnipresence of water, the pervasiveness of urbanization coupled with a high-tech agricultural sector, and the legacy of colonialism--but at the same time makes it clear that Dutch struggles over technology choices, infrastructure development, mass production, and the role of government are comparable to the experience of any Western industrialized country. The book, which synthesizes findings originally presented in a series of seven volumes published in the Netherlands, uses the idea of contested modernization as an overarching concept through which to understand Dutch technological history. The modernizers of Dutch society--including engineers, management consultants, architects, and others--did not always agree on how to modernize; moreover, the unruliness of specific practices often derailed or redirected implementation. Tensions between top-down and bottom-up modernization, and between scale-enlargement and more flexible arrangements of mutual coordination and cooperation shaped Dutch history. The chapters examine such topics as attempts to create an industrial nation, materially connected through infrastructure; the conflicts that came with the arrival of mass production and the emergence of a consumer society; and land-use planning in a low-lying country.

Book Parliaments and Technology

Download or read book Parliaments and Technology written by Norman J. Vig and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1999-11-04 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parliaments and Technology explores an issue critically important to the practice of democracy everywhere: How do citizens and elected officials assess the opportunities and costs of new technologies that may profoundly impact their societies' future? For example, what are the social and moral implications of gene patents, reproductive technology, cloning and genetic engineering or of virtually unlimited access to information? Technology assessment has become one of the most important methodologies for aiding legislatures in analyzing and deliberating such questions. The first comparative analysis of the development and practice of parliamentary technology assessment in different national settings, this book explains the origins, methods, and impacts in five European countries—Britain, France, Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands—and the European Parliament. It also provides a theoretical framework for comparing the institutionalization of new functions in different parliamentary systems and the influence of national political cultures on the conceptualization and operation of these new agencies. Contributors include Josée van Eijndhoven, John Grin, Dick Holdsworth, Rob Hoppe, Simon Jos, Lars Klüver, Todd M. La Porte, Maurice Laurent, Michael Norton, Herbert Paschen, Thomas Petermann, and Norman J. Vig.

This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Influence of the Netherlands in the Making of the English Commonwealth and the American Republic: With Notice of What the Pilgrims Learned in Holland, Their Treatment by the Government and People, and Answers to Criticisms Made Upon the Proposed Delfshaven Memorial; A Paper Read Before the Boston Congregational Club, Monday Evening, Oct; 26, 1891 For the settlement of the historical questions raised by critics of the larger enterprise inaugurated by this Club, it was necessary that those who defended it should not be content with second hand Opinions, but form their judgments independently, after examination of the sources of authority. Accordingly the writer made a special trip to the Netherlands and to the eastern counties of England, spending a month in each of these countries, seeking new facts, and refreshing the memory, also, of a line of readings begun some years ago and continued to the present time. The result has been the confirmation of judgments to which, as a student and independent investigator, he came some years ago. Book Media Policy for the Digital Age

Download or read book Media Policy for the Digital Age written by and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, the Netherlands has enjoyed status as a test market for new media. But in the past decade, such innovations have been severely hampered by questions about the future of public broadcasting. This issue has led to abundant political grandstanding, but little in the way of definitive policymaking. In February 2005, the Scientific Council for Government Policy published a report with practical policy suggestions. Media Policy for the Digital Age summarizes the Council’s recommendations, giving readers outside the Netherlands insight into the issues at stake and possible solutions, as well as a concise analysis that tackles the challenges of making robust media policy for the twenty-first century.
