Book Advances in Efficiency and Productivity II

Download or read book Advances in Efficiency and Productivity II written by Juan Aparicio and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-07-20 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the state-of-the-art in efficiency and productivity analysis, examining advances in the analytical foundations and empirical applications. The analytical techniques developed in this book for efficiency provide alternative ways of defining optimum outcome sets, typically as a (technical) production frontier or as an (economic) cost, revenue or profit frontier, and alternative ways of measuring efficiency relative to an appropriate frontier. Simultaneously, the analytical techniques developed for efficiency analysis extend directly to productivity analysis, thereby providing alternative methods for estimating productivity levels, and productivity change through time or productivity variation across producers. This book includes chapters using data envelopment analysis (DEA) or stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) as quantitative techniques capable of measuring efficiency and productivity. Across the book’s 15 chapters, it broadly extends into popular application areas including agriculture, banking and finance, and municipal performance, and relatively new application areas including corporate social responsibility, the value of intangible assets, land consolidation, and the measurement of economic well-being. The chapters also cover topics such as permutation tests for production frontier shifts, new indices of total factor productivity, and also randomized controlled trials and production frontiers.

Book Fertilizer Quality and its Impacts on Technical Efficiency and Use Intensity in the North China Plain

Download or read book Fertilizer Quality and its Impacts on Technical Efficiency and Use Intensity in the North China Plain written by Ling Yee Khor and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fertilizer has helped the growth of agriculture for decades. However, its overuse in some regions has caused environmental and health problems due to pollution and contamination of groundwater. Fertilizer quality is another cause for concern in many countries, as the actual nutrient content may not match the labeled content on the packaging. The North China Plain is a region affected by both fertilizer overuse and quality problems. This study delves into the issue using economic models and survey data of farm households. Is the effectiveness of fertilizer overstated? How do farmers respond to uncertainty in fertilizer quality? Can they differentiate between good and poor quality fertilizer?

Book Agri Innovations and Development Challenges

Download or read book Agri Innovations and Development Challenges written by Vanessa Casadella and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-08-31 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovation is a major challenge for economic development and social progress. Faced with the ecological and food problems that the world is currently experiencing, the legitimacy of innovation takes on its full meaning, particularly in developing countries. As emphasized by international organizations (UN, FAO), building skills and abilities in the agricultural and food sectors are necessary when launching innovation processes for the benefit of suffering populations. This book deals with different experiences launched in many developing countries in these sectors and shows how local initiatives can provide answers to the pessimism of experts and the media. Multidisciplinary analysis and practices explain how collective work creates value chains that can foster local and national economic development. The authors revisit the innovation agri-food models that contribute to economic development. Agri-Innovations and Development Challenges is composed of general presentations of innovations applied in developing countries, as well as specific studies on the joint valorization of knowledge and experience in agri-food engineering

Book Identification of Factors Which Influence the Technical Inefficiency of Indian Farmers

Download or read book Identification of Factors Which Influence the Technical Inefficiency of Indian Farmers written by Tim Coelli and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The agricultural production of Indian farmers is investigated using a stochastic frontier production function which incorporates a model for the technical inefficiency effects. Farm-level data from the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) are used. Variables considered in the model for the inefficiency effects include the age and level of education of the farmers, farm size and the year of observation. The parameters of the stochastic frontier production function are estimated simultaneously with those involved in the model for the inefficiency effects. This approach differs from the usual practice of predicting farm-level inefficiency effects and then regressing these upon various factors in a second-stage of modelling. The results indicate that the above factors do have a significant influence upon the inefficiency effects of farmers in two of the three villages considered.

Book The agricultural technical efficiency and food security nexus

Download or read book The agricultural technical efficiency and food security nexus written by Nano, E. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2023-12-04 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food insecurity is one of the world’s greatest challenges and there is still a strong debate on which structural strategies should be adopted to cope with it. In sub-Saharan Africa food insecurity is accompanied by very poor technical efficiency of farmers, particularly smallholders, resulting in below potential agricultural profits. The food security and technical efficiency challenges can be tackled with some common solutions: this paper studies the relation between agricultural technical efficiency and food insecurity in Nigeria using a two-step approach. It first estimates farmers’ technical efficiency, employing a profit stochastic frontier framework on three waves of Nigeria’s General Household Survey between 2010 and 2016. Then, it assesses the impact of these estimates on mild, moderate and severe measures of food insecurity at the province level, thanks to both probit and biprobit models with a rich set of covariates, including demographic, economic, agricultural and geographic characteristics. The results suggest that technical efficiency improvements are particularly effective in reducing the more severe types of food insecurity: an increase by 1 percent in technical efficiency reduces moderate (severe) food insecurity by 0.40 (0.45) percent. Therefore, policies aimed at improving farmers’ technical efficiency can also have a strong impact on reducing food insecurity.

Book Computers and Productivity in France

Download or read book Computers and Productivity in France written by Nathalie Greenan and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, we make a first attempt to explore the relationship between computer use and productivity in French manufacturing and services industries. We match information on computer utilization in the work place collected at the employee level in the years 1987, 1991 and 1993, with information on firm productivity, capital intensity and average wage available at the firm level. Being based on the answers of very few interviewed employees (only one for 75% of the firms in our samples), our measure of firm computer use is subject to important sampling errors, and hence our estimates of computer impacts are largely affected by random errors in variables downward biases. Nonetheless we find coherent and persuasive evidence that the computer impacts on productivity are indeed positive and that the returns to the firm should at least be in the same range as the returns to the other types of capital. We also show that the sampling errors in measurement biases can be assessed, and we make the general point that econometric studies of the firm can be effectively and substantially enriched by using information collected from workers, even if very few of them are surveyed per firm.

Book Organic Input Production and Marketing in India Efficiency Issues and Policies CMA Publication No 239

Download or read book Organic Input Production and Marketing in India Efficiency Issues and Policies CMA Publication No 239 written by Kumara Charyulu Deevi and published by Allied Publishers. This book was released on 2011-07-25 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of industrial agriculture and the green revolution in recent decades has often masked by significant externalities, affecting natural resources and human health as well as agriculture itself. Environmental and health problems associated with agriculture have been increasingly well documented, but it is only recently that the scale of the costs has attracted the attention of planners and scientists. Increasing consciousness about conservation of environment as well as of health hazards caused by agrochemicals has brought a major shift in consumer preference towards food quality. This timely book is a one stop resource for agriculturists, planners, policy makers and other stakeholders who are involved in organic cultivation. The findings emanated from this study would be helpful for Ministry of Agriculture, organic producers, organic input users and other associations involved in organic produce supply-chains in the country.
