Download or read book Technological Innovation and Economic Change in the Iron Industry 1850 1920 written by Robert A. Battis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1989 this study examines some new facets in the development of the iron industry in the USA between 1839 and 1921 through the study of an individaul form, namely the Thoms Iron Company, one of the leading merchant furnace companies. It charts the end of the anthracite iron age and the changes which brought about the advent of open-hearth steel and integrated steel works. The book discusses the problems the managers of the firm faced with the appearance of industrial innovations which tended to undermine their firm's very existence and provided a new set of optimal conditions necessary for the survival of the firm. It provides a clear understanding of the destructive forces of industrial innovation and the place of creative entrepreneurship in the survival of the firm.

Book Technological Change and the British Iron Industry 1700 1870

Download or read book Technological Change and the British Iron Industry 1700 1870 written by Charles K. Hyde and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes technological change in an industry that played a central role in the Indsutrial Revolution. While earlier scholars have examined isolated aspects of ironmaking in the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Britain, Charles Hyde surveys all aspects of its development. Costs, prices, profits, shrewd leaders, competition, new inventions, and productivity all figure in this story of a key industry during the major period of its evolution. The author's account illuminates not only the nature of innovation in one industry, but the nature of technologial change in general. using new data compiled form the records of the ironmaking concerns, Professor Hyde considers each of the basic economic variables affecting entrepreneurial decisions. He finds that ironmaking advanced through a process of gradual, continuous change rather than through a series of discrete innovations. The rate of diffusion of new techniques corresponded to their profitability when compared to that of existing means of production--a finding that explains that timing of innovation. Charles K. Hyde is Assistant Professor of Social Science at Monteith College, Wayne State University. Originally published in 1977. Book Geography Technology and the Flux of Opportunity

Download or read book Geography Technology and the Flux of Opportunity written by Nader Elhefnawy and published by Nader Elhefnawy. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GEOGRAPHY, TECHNOLOGY AND THE FLUX OF OPPORTUNITY takes up the issue of the rise and decline of British economic predominance in modern times. In its analysis it emphasizes the interaction of geography with other economic, technological and political forces amid a context of other actors similarly shaped by such interactions. It argues for this as the driver of Britain's ascent as maritime, trading and colonial power, and its strongly related industrialization, as well as its decreasing competitiveness as other states were favored by their own geographical situations, and the opportunities the evolving economic and technological situation afforded.

Book The Industrial Revolution in Iron

Download or read book The Industrial Revolution in Iron written by Chris Evans and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume, each written by an acknowledged expert in the field, trace the fortunes of British coal technology as it spread across the European continent, from Sweden and Russia to the Alps and Spain, and supply an authoritative picture of industrial transformation in one of the key industries of the 19th century. In this period iron making in continental Europe was transformed by the take-up of technologies such as coke smelting and iron puddling that had already revolutionised the British iron industry. The transfer of British technologies was fundamental to European industrialisation, but that transfer was not straightforward. The techniques that had proved so successful in Britain had to be adapted to local circumstances elsewhere, for charcoal-fired techniques proved surprisingly durable. More often than not, as these studies show, coal-fired methods were incorporated into traditional production systems, making for the proliferation of technological hybrids. Overall, it is diversity that stands out. Some European regions (southern Belgium) came near to the British model; others (Spain) persisted with charcoal technology into the late 19th century. Some countries (Sweden) adopted British organisational principles but not the reliance on coal; others (Russia) maintained different iron making sectors - one coal-based, the other loyal to charcoal - in parallel.

Book Iron and Steel in the Industrial Revolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book Iron and Steel in the Industrial Revolution Classic Reprint written by Thomas Southcliffe Ashton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iron and Steel in the Industrial Revolution This contribution to the history of the English Iron Industry is the product of the leisure, not of an historian, but of one engaged in teaching economic theory. The materials on which it is based were collected when I was on the staff first of the University of Sheffield, then of the University of Birmingham; but most of the actual writing has been done in Manchester. A generation ago writers on modern economic history found their principal quarry in blue-books, Parliamentary Journals, and other Government records. Hence arose not only an over-estimate of the part played by the State in economic development, but also, perhaps, an unduly gloomy View of former industrial society; for it -is the Pathology, rather than the Physiology, of social life that forms the subject of commissions of enquiry, of Home Office reports, and of parliamentary debates. Within the last few years a small group of scholars has attempted to re-write the economic history of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, using as a basis the surviving records of business undertakings. The University of Manchester already possesses the complete documents of four such concerns, and it is hoped that proprietors of long-established businesses will add to the collection. By so doing they will help to a truer View of the past, and therefore to a clearer understanding of the present. They need have no misgivings Concerning publicity. Houses that have stood the test of a century were not built, shamefully, on sand their foundations will bear scrutiny.
