Book excerpt: Dynamic fracture in solids has attracted much attention for over a century from engineers as well as physicists due both to its technological interest and to inherent scientific curiosity. Rapidly applied loads are encountered in a number of technical applications. In some cases such loads might be applied deliberately, as for example in problems of blasting, mining, and comminution or fragmentation; in other cases, such dynamic loads might arise from accidental conditions. Regardless of the origin of the rapid loading, it is necessary to understand the mechanisms and mechanics of fracture under dynamic loading conditions in order to design suitable procedures for assessing the susceptibility to fracture. Quite apart from its repercussions in the area of structural integrity, fundamental scientific curiosity has continued to play a large role in engendering interest in dynamic fracture problems In-depth coverage of the mechanics, experimental methods, practical applications Summary of material response of different materials Discussion of unresolved issues in dynamic fracture

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From time to time the International Journal of Fracture has presented matters thought to be of special interest to its readers. In previous special issues (December 1980 and April 1981), Dr H.W. Liu as Guest Editor presented a series of review papers dealing with fatigue processes and characteristics in metals and non-metals. Continuing this policy, which is consistent with our stated objectives, a second review dealing with time depen dence in the fracture process, including the effect of material inertia but essentially excluding very strong shock effects in solids, has been assembled under the generic term "dynamic fracture". We hope that the ensuing state-of-the-art review will yield an instructive and timely product which readers will find useful. To assist us in presenting this subject, we have prevailed upon a well-known worker in dynamic fracture, Dr W.G. Knauss, Professor of Aeronautics and Applied Mechanics, California Institute of Technology to act as Guest Editor for this special double issue. On behalf of the editors and publisher, I wish to express our indebtedness to Professor Knauss and his invited authors for undertaking this special effort.

Book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Measurements on Small Charpy Specimens 97 A Preliminary Study

Download or read book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Measurements on Small Charpy Specimens 97 A Preliminary Study written by WN. Sharpe and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique for measuring dynamic fracture toughness on small specimens is described and preliminary data are presented. Dynamic crack tip opening displacements (CTODs) are measured with laser interferometry over times as short as 10 ?s. The measured displacement is converted to stress intensity values via the equations of linear elastic fracture mechanics and the peak value obtained is taken as the dynamic fracture toughness.

Download or read book Dynamics of Fracture written by N. Morozov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-05 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book a new phenomenological approach to brittle medium fracture initiation under shock pulses is developped. It provides an opportunity to estimate fracture of media with and without macrodefects. A qualitative explanation is thus obtained for a number of principally important effects of high-speed dynamic fracture that cannot be clarified within the framework of previous approaches. It is possible to apply this new strategy to resolve applied problems of disintegration, erosion, and dynamic strength determination of structural materials. Specialists can use the methods described to determine critical characteristics of dynamic strength and optimal effective fracture conditions for rigid bodies. This book can also be used as a special educational course on deformation of materials and constructions, and fracture mechanics.

Book The Development of Standard Methods for Determining the Dynamic Fracture Toughness of Metallic Materials

Download or read book The Development of Standard Methods for Determining the Dynamic Fracture Toughness of Metallic Materials written by DF. Cannon and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A simple, reliable, and repeatable method has been developed for determining dynamic plane-strain fracture toughness using an on-specimen strain gage. This extends the range of the British Standard Method for Determination of the Dynamic Fracture Toughness of Metallic Materials (BS 6729) to include measurement at impact testing rates. Dynamic finite element computing was used to optimize the position of the gage on the specimen. In tests at low loading rates on Charpy specimens, good agreement was found between toughness values calculated from the applied load and the calibrated gage, and with those measured by the shadow optic caustic technique. At higher rates, several gage types and two adhesives were compared. A satisfactory method was developed for performing tests at high and low temperatures. The technique was applied to larger bend specimens of two steels, and a test program was conducted at seven laboratories to assess the influence of testing machine and instrumentation variables. From the results, a standard calibration and test procedure has been developed.

Book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Measurement

Download or read book Dynamic Fracture Toughness Measurement written by J. Congleton and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: KId values for PMMA, glass and 'Pitho' tool steel have been measured by a technique based on crack velocity measure-ments. Fracture induced by combined tensile and impact loading can cause a crack to decelerate, pass through a minimum velocity them accelerate again. Crack tip stress in- tensity at the minimum crack velocity is the dynamic fracture toughness for that velocity. Values obtained for PMMA and glass show that KId for slow moving cracks are sig-nificantly smaller than both the corresponding KIc and KId values for fast moving cracks. Reasons for the variation of fracture toughness with crack velocity are discussed. (Author, modified-PL).

In addition to a brief discussion of computational fracture methods, the text includes practical sections on fracture criteria, fracture toughness testing, and methods for measuring stress intensity factors and energy release rates. Class-tested at Cornell, this book is designed for students, researchers and practitioners interested in understanding and contributing to a diverse and vital field of knowledge.

Book On the Determination of Dynamic Fracture Toughness Properties by Instrumented Impact Testing

Download or read book On the Determination of Dynamic Fracture Toughness Properties by Instrumented Impact Testing written by GB. Lenkey and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the engineering practice it is of importance to know the effect of loading rate on the material behaviour, e.g., on the fracture mechanics properties. One of the most widely used testing techniques for determining these properties is the instrumented impact test. Depending on the material behaviour under a given loading condition, different fracture mechanics parameters should be determined. Most of the evaluation procedures of these parameters are still not standardised for higher loading rates. So the aim of the present work was to investigate the applicability of different methods for determining dynamic fracture toughness properties. Instrumented impact experiments combining with magnetic emission measurement have been performed on pre-cracked Charpy-V specimens of E420 C and QStE 690 TM high strength steels. Critical values of stress intensity factor (KId, KJi) related to the initiation of the fracture at different temperatures have been determined Using different methods depending on the type of the fracture.
