Book Instruments and Methods for the Radio Detection of High Energy Cosmic Rays

Download or read book Instruments and Methods for the Radio Detection of High Energy Cosmic Rays written by Frank Schröder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-14 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cosmic rays consist of elementary particles with enormous energy which originate from outside our solar system and constantly hit the Earth’s atmosphere. Where do these cosmic rays originate? How does nature accelerate the cosmic-ray particles to energies with orders of magnitude beyond the limits of manmade particle accelerators? What can we learn by measuring the interactions of the cosmic rays with the atmosphere? Digital radio-antenna arrays offer a promising, complementary measurement method for high-energy cosmic rays. This thesis reports on substantial advances in the development of the radio technique, which will be used to address these questions in future experiments.

This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover a modern approach to the analysis, modeling and design of high sensitivity phased arrays. Network theory, numerical methods and computational electromagnetic simulation techniques are uniquely combined to enable full system analysis and design optimization. Beamforming and array signal processing theory are integrated into the treatment from the start. Digital signal processing methods such as polyphase filtering and RFI mitigation are described, along with technologies for real-time hardware implementation. Key concepts from interferometric imaging used in radio telescopes are also considered. A basic development of theory and modeling techniques is accompanied by problem sets that guide readers in developing modeling codes that retain the simplicity of the classical array factor method while incorporating mutual coupling effects and interactions between elements. Combining current research trends with pedagogical material suitable for a first-year graduate course, this is an invaluable resource for students, teachers, researchers, and practicing RF/microwave and antenna design engineers.

Book Optimized Systems and Calibration of Millimeter Wave Phased Arrays for 5G SATCOM and Radar Applications

Download or read book Optimized Systems and Calibration of Millimeter Wave Phased Arrays for 5G SATCOM and Radar Applications written by Zhe Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phased array technologies has been in development for many decades but primarily in defense industry with large complicated systems and excessively high cost. With the recent advances in silicon chips and printed-circuit board (PCB) manufacturing, planar phased arrays can be built on a PCB in a compact form with drastically lower cost. The new 5G communication standards also utilize millimeter wave bands that require phased arrays with high effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) and beam steering capabilities. The 5G systems, with the fast growing industry of satellite communications on-the-move, and millimeter wave automotive radars used for self-driving technologies, contribute to a giant market in need of a large amount of low cost phased arrays. This dissertation focuses on such commercial-use phased arrays, studies their artifacts and how to eliminate them, provides solutions to optimized phased-array systems, and proposes calibration methods essential for their performance. First, it presents the intersymbol interference (ISI) caused by the phased array when it is scanned with a simple effective equalization scheme, and then, it presents a TX/RX phased-array system with a reduced number of randomly distributed elements that is optimized for radar applications. This dissertation also presents a new method for phased array calibration based on 2x2 sub-arrays that is more robust across different scan angles and yields better performance while reducing the measurement time. Finally, a method to measure the error vector magnitude (EVM) of the phased array in the near-field is presented, which can be used to verify the calibration and performance of phased arrays in communication systems when they are deployed in the field.

Book Interferometry and Synthesis in Radio Astronomy

Download or read book Interferometry and Synthesis in Radio Astronomy written by A. Richard Thompson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-22 with total page 910 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY-NC 4.0 license. The third edition of this indispensable book in radio interferometry provides extensive updates to the second edition, including results and technical advances from the past decade; discussion of arrays that now span the full range of the radio part of the electromagnetic spectrum observable from the ground, 10 MHz to 1 THz; an analysis of factors that affect array speed; and an expanded discussion of digital signal-processing techniques and of scintillation phenomena and the effects of atmospheric water vapor on image distortion, among many other topics. With its comprehensiveness and detailed exposition of all aspects of the theory and practice of radio interferometry and synthesis imaging, this book has established itself as a standard reference in the field. It begins with an overview of the basic principles of radio astronomy, a short history of the development of radio interferometry, and an elementary discussion of the operation of an interferometer. From this foundation, it delves into the underlying relationships of interferometry, sets forth the coordinate systems and parameters to describe synthesis imaging, and examines configurations of antennas for multielement synthesis arrays. Various aspects of the design and response of receiving systems are discussed, as well as the special requirements of very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI), image reconstruction, and recent developments in image enhancement techniques and astrometric observations. Also discussed are propagation effects in the media between the source and the observer, and radio interference, factors that limit performance. Related techniques are introduced, including intensity interferometry, optical interferometry, lunar occultations, tracking of satellites in Earth orbit, interferometry for remote Earth sensing, and holographic measurements of antenna surfaces. This book will benefit anyone who is interested in radio interferometry techniques for astronomy, astrometry, geodesy, or electrical engineering.
