Book excerpt: That he frequently used tears in his poetry does not seem unusual when one considers the fact that John Donne lived in an age in which melancholy was the most prominent mood in literature as well as in life. In his use of tears, Donne draws upon an artistic convention which Pierre Janelle traces to the Council of Trent with its decree on the nature and consequences of original sin. The tears of the age were not long confined to weeping for sin, however; soon they flowed easily and copiously from seventeenth-century lovers' eyes as well as from the pens of the contemporary poets and songsters. Through his frequent use of tears and tear imagery in his poems, John Donne not only remained in close touch with the literary conventions which were characteristic of his time but also employed a valuable poetic device and one which was especially suited to his needs as a poet.

"A Valediction" is a 36-line love poem that was first published in the 1633 collection Songs and Sonnets, two years after Donne's death. Based around the idea of two parting lovers, the poem is notable for its use of conceits and heavy allegory to describe the couple's relationship. John Donne was an English poet, satirist, lawyer and priest. He is considered the pre-eminent representative of the metaphysical poets. His works are noted for their strong, sensual style and include sonnets, love poetry, religious poems, Latin translations, epigrams, elegies, songs, satires and sermons. His poetry is noted for its vibrancy of language and inventiveness of metaphor, especially compared to that of his contemporaries.
