Book The Elementary School Subjects Vol 1

Download or read book The Elementary School Subjects Vol 1 written by Calvin N. Kendall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elementary School Subjects, Vol. 1: How to Teach the Fundamental Subjects Tms book discusses the teaching of the common fundamental subjects found in elementary schools. It also contains suggestions as to what should make up the course of study in these subjects, and it attempts to set forth some of the principles that should underlie methods of instruction and determine the selection of subject-matter. It is essentially a book for the use of teachers and supervisors of schools and for those who are preparing to be teachers. The subjects discussed consume by far the greater part of the time of both teachers and pupils in the elementary schools. To say that the teaching of these subjects should be as skillful as possible is a common place. Because of the difference in the quality of teaching, one class exercise in reading is of infinitely greater value than another class exercise. For the same reason, one school may be found to be inferior to another school, even in the same system. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Science in the Elementary School The part that science plays in modern life is so vital that science teaching must inevitably have an important place in the school curriculum. There has been some confusion regarding the term to be used to cover the work in science in the elementary school Nature-study' has been the word in most common usage. But there is considerable misunderstanding as to what is included under this term. In recent years it has been used in an ever-broadening sense till now the word is used by many educators to include all phases of science adapted to the elementary school. But among people in general the common notion still prevails that nature-study includes only the study of Wild plants and animals. So that, considering all sides of the matter, it has seemed better to the author to adopt the word science instead of nature-study, as tending to involve less mis understanding and as helping to establish an appropriate and standard term. Book Fundamentals in Elementary Education Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fundamentals in Elementary Education Classic Reprint written by Claude A. Fhillips and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamentals in Elementary Education The subject matter of this book is a direct outgrowth of the experiences of the Department of Education in the State Normal School at Warrensburg, Missouri, in giving courses in Education to beginners in that subject. During the ten years of the experiment, the major portion of the material has been tried out in more than one hundred fifty classes, taught by well-trained teachers. The book is de signed primarily for students in Teacher-training Classes in Education in high schools, and in Elementary Courses in normal schools; and it is well adapted to Teachers' Reading Circles. It might well be used as an Introductory Course in Education in colleges or in College Courses in normal schools. The author has tried to keep in the foreground the function of the elementary school as the greatest single agency in a democracy for the education of its children, and, while no effort has been made to exhaust the topics concerning elementary schools, an attempt has been made to discuss the fundamental ones with considerable detail and thoroughness. Practically all of the Problems presented at the end of each chapter may be answered from the subject matter contained in the text, and the experiences of the teacher and students. The selected readings are intended chiefly for supplementary purposes, and for those students who have access to a good library. It is needless to state that the writer claims no large degree of originality for the volume, because he has drawn freely upon pedagogical literature as it relates to the elementary school. Download or read book The Teaching of History in Elementary Schools Classic Reprint written by R. L. Archer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of History in Elementary Schools To-day the attention of everyone is fixed on the history that is being made from hour to hour. Our grasp of the ideals which we have formed in the past is being put to the test, and the course of the future is being determined. Patriotism is not a matter of discussion, but of action. The connection between the lessons which the citizens of Great Britain have learned from their knowledge of her history and the significance which they attach to the present momentous struggle is so close that we hope to -be pardoned for publishing a book on the teaching of history even at such a time. It is true that, in the midst of such events, it is hard to view the past in its proper perspective and not to regard the whole course of his tory from the standpoint of the present issues. The book, however, was in the main written before the war, when it was possible to look back on the past and for ward into the future with less emotion and more cold blooded judgment. What emboldens us to publish it now is that, reading our manuscript again in these days when interpretations of history are being tested in the fire, we see nothing to withdraw and little to alter. Book The Teaching of General Science Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of General Science Classic Reprint written by William Lewis Eikenberry and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of General Science Never before in this country has there been so insistent a demand for a more thorough and more comprehensive system of instruction in practical science. Forced by recent events to compare our education with that of other nations, we have suddenly become aware of our negligence in this matter. Now industrial and educational experts and commissions are united in demanding a change. While on the whole there has been a steady increase in the amount of time given to science work in the secondary and elementary schools, the attention paid to it, especially in the elementary schools, has been somewhat spasmodic, and its administration has been more or less chaotic. This is not due to lack of interest on the part of school officials but to their dissatisfaction with the methods of instruction employed. There is no doubt that superintendents would gladly introduce more science if they felt sure that the educational results would be commensurate with the time expended. This is indicated by a recent survey of about one hundred and fifty cities in seven states of the Central West. The survey shows that two-thirds of them have nature-study in the elementary schools and that all are requiring some science for graduation from the high school. The average high school is offering three years of science. Since 1900 there has been a greater increase in the percentage of students enrolled in science in the high schools than in any other subject with the one exception of English. Moreover, greater attention is now being paid to the training of teachers in methods of presentation of science. Book The Curriculum of the Horace Mann Elementary School Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Curriculum of the Horace Mann Elementary School Classic Reprint written by Teachers of the Horace Mann Elem School and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Curriculum of the Horace Mann Elementary School The curriculum of the Horace Mann Elementary School, as published in five numbers of the teachers college record in 1906 and 1907, has long since been out of date as well as out of print. In response to many requests, therefore, this revision of the course of study is published. The changes from the former curriculum, while they are numer ous, have been the result of a gradual growth during the past six years. The administration of the school leaves the principal and the teachers peculiarly free to modify their methods of teaching and the subject matter of instruction whenever it seems best to do so in View of the best interests of the pupils and in accordance with the best accepted educational practice. The specific changes that have been made are noted in the introductory statements under each subject. The Study of New York City, which is outlined in Chapter IV, is an organized attempt to prepare our pupils to take a more intelligent and enthusiastic interest in civic betterment. As they become better acquainted with local history and tradition and with our best artistic possessions, as they come to realize the great social problems growing out of the industrial life of their city and the organizations of good citizens that are working to solve such problems, we hope that they themselves will soon develop a high type of civic responsibility. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook for Elementary Schools, 1932 The success of an elementary school is largely dependent on proper organization. The distribution of the work among the several teachers is a vital problem. This is properly the function of the superintendent working through the principal. It is important that teachers know at the time of election that grade placement is in the hands Of the principal. It is desirable that the pupil-load be distributed as equitably as possi ble. It is undesirable organization for some teachers to be overloaded while others have comparatively few pupils. It is Often necessary for teachers to have pupils from two different grades in order to equalize the pupil-load. The practice of teaching high school pupils in an elementary school usually results in poor high school work and deprives elementary children of services rightly belonging to them. It makes proper elementary in struction almost impossible, since it usually means that the time Of one teacher is taken up with high school work and the pupil-load in the elementary school is increased for the other teachers. Certification. Each type of certificate requires a minimum training peculiar to the certificate. To change a certificate from one field to another it is necessary to have credit for all of the work prescribed for the certificate to which one wishes to change. High School Teachers' Certificates are now issued in subjects. One is restricted to teaching in the high school the subject or subjects which appear on the certificate. These subject High School Certificates are not valid for teaching in the elementary grades. The blanket or general High School Teacher's Certificate issued prior to July 1, 1931, is valid for teaching any subject in the high school, except Vocational Home Economics and Agriculture. The certificate, also, per mits one to teach as low as the fourth grade in a standard elementary school, or in any grade of the elementary school if it is not standard. However, such practice is highly undesirable. To be issued a grade certificate, it would be necessary to meet the present requirements for the certificate desired. Download or read book Teaching in Rural Schools Classic Reprint written by Thomas Jackson Woofter and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching in Rural Schools The United States Census Bureau classifies as living under rural conditions all persons living in the open country and in towns and villages having less that 2500 inhabitants. On this basis, according to the census of 1910, 53.7 per cent of the population of the United States was classed as rural, and the figures probably have not changed materially since that date. In the last printed report of the United States Commissioner of Education it was stated that, during the preceding year, 58.4 per cent of the children enrolled in the public schools of the United States were enrolled in schools classified by the Census Bureau as rural, while of the 600,000 teachers employed, 60 per cent were employed in these rural communities. Approximately eighteen million children were enrolled in these same schools, and about 95 per cent of these were in the elementary grades. When we turn from a consideration of the United States as a whole to a consideration of the individual States, we find that in 34 out of the 48 States more than 50 per cent of the population was living, in 1910, under conditions classed as rural, and in 17 of the 48 States the number so living exceeded 75 per cent of the whole. In 11 States the number exceeded 80 percent of the whole. In the 17 States in which the population was more than 75 per cent rural, from 75 to 80 per cent of the teachers and children are working in rural schools. Still more, approximately 215,000 of the 600,000 teachers employed in all public schools in the United States are to-day working in one-teacher rural schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Departmental Teaching in Elementary Schools Ever since President Charles W. Eliot of Harvard emphasized the necessity of enriching the elementary curriculum through departmental teaching, there have been a number of efforts in various cities of the country to try out the suggestion. Dr. William H. Maxwell, the chief exponent of departmental teaching in the United States, has encouraged its growth in New York City during the last seven years. It has there become the prevailing method of teaching in the last two years of the elementary schools. Its success is pronounced. Numerous inquiries indicate that the leaders of other educational systems are greatly interested in the new departure. In adding to the literature of the subject, I have written entirely from the standpoint of a teacher. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
