Book Teaching and Learning in Portable Classrooms

Download or read book Teaching and Learning in Portable Classrooms written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of school overcrowding on teaching and learning is an issue that continues to be debated throughout time. Introducing portable classrooms in schools has become a viable option for administrators to use to help combat the escalating student population around the nation. Such settings have been shown to have an equal amount of supporters and critics. Despite the division between both sides, the success inside of a classroom can vary as a result of numerous variables. The research presented may be important for educators because present classroom design and arrangement may not be adequate for the "student-directed" learning philosophies that are presently being introduced inside of the classroom. While school budgets continue to be scrutinized, the arrangement and use of space inside of each classroom are keys that can be used now as educators observe the ramifications of the continued debates. The strategies suggested in this research are based on these areas and include suggestions for both teachers and administrators.

Book excerpt: The concept of portable classrooms has existed for years and has been shown to have academic and social disadvantages for teaching and learning in these environments. The success of portable classroom instruction is dependant upon the outlook and usage of the school district. This research explores classroom environments, provisions for instruction, and mechanisms to address them. Factors affecting the success of teaching in portable classroom environments include aesthetics, temperature, size and space, acoustics, and perceptions. Without appropriate classroom environments, teaching and learning can be limited for general education and special education students. The strategies mentioned in this research focus on these areas and include recommendations to assist teachers and administrators. The instructional significance this has on teachers depends on the tools for effective teaching and the decision making criteria applied when using portable classrooms. The intention of this research is to generate and suggest improvements for teaching in this environment. The key to a successful classroom is the effectiveness and efficiency of the environmental design which directly affects instruction and optimizes student learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education has traditionally studied the world by bringing it into the classroom. This can result in situated learning that appears to students to have no relevance outside the classroom. Students acquire inert, decontextualized knowledge that they cannot apply to real problems. The obvious solution to this shortcoming is to reverse the situation and bring the classroom to the phenomena: to learn in a rich, real-world context. The problem with the real world is that it is complex and filled with interactions that are hard to sort out. The editors and authors believe that the right tools might help students with this sorting process and result in learning in rich contexts. This book is an account of a series of experiments designed to explore the validity of this insight.
