Book Advanced Composition for ESL Students

Download or read book Advanced Composition for ESL Students written by Bryan Ryan and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced Composition for ESL Students (ACES) is a textbook and handbook designed to familiarize international students for whom English is not their native language with the expectations of academic and other types of formal writing, especially at the college level and beyond. It will focus on the writing process, the structure of paragraphs and essays, common rhetorical forms, and the grammatical structures and mechanics of good written communication. This book is targeted at internationals learning English for academic purposes and seeking a deeper understanding of American culture. Therefore, the book will engage the students in high-interest topics that have remained current in social discourse and relevant in higher education settings. Its approach will be to lead students through the writing process while at the same time exposing them to the kind of active learning expected in American schools--learning that requires students to take responsibility for their own learning, to exercise critical thinking, to work cooperatively with peers, and to apply their new knowledge beyond the classroom. As a writing textbook, ACES involves students in using the variety of traditional tools available to writers--reference books, writers' handbooks, and library resources. It also engages students in the use of tools available through new media such as the Internet. Though primarily focused on written communication, ACES also integrates reading, speaking, and grammar activities to emphasize their relationship to good written communication. The book is designed to support teachers and students working together in a traditional classroom environment. It also includes activities that will allow blending traditional instruction with learning at a distance. And, with its extensive appendices, it should serve students long after they leave the classroom.

Book Landmark Essays on Advanced Composition

Download or read book Landmark Essays on Advanced Composition written by Gary A. Olson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1996 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As advanced composition continues to grow as an important sub-area of rhetoric and composition, it becomes increasingly more important for scholars and teachers to have access to key studies produced in the field. Providing a comprehensive overview of significant work on the theory and pedagogy of advanced composition generated between 1980 and 1995, this collection contains 24 essays and articles previously published in major scholarly books and journals. Divided into four major areas, this book: * explores how individuals and institutions over the last 15 years have constructed advanced composition courses and programs, * attempts to articulate what distinguishes advanced composition courses, students, and pedagogies from those commonly encountered in first-year composition, * outlines specific pedagogies for advanced composition, and * investigates how scholarship can inform advanced composition and examines several political and ethical issues. The essays presented here chronicle composition's struggle to define and construct an appropriate writing course on the advanced level. Although these essays have clear historical value -- in that together they trace attempts to come to terms with advanced composition -- they also have implications for future work in the area. They suggest how educators might continue to draw on scholarship both within and outside of composition to investigate relevant theoretical issues and to construct effective advanced pedagogies.

It addresses the needs of those students returning to college after being out of school for some time as a result of raising a family, work, military, or other break from the traditional four-year pattern. The Guidebook begins with basic composition skills and then builds on them to lead students to graduate level effectiveness. Students will discover advanced composition skills are really basic skills that pay attention to additional considerations of composition. Because each consideration is a step to the next, students will find the road to advanced composition manageable and obtainable.

Book Composition In The University

Download or read book Composition In The University written by Sharon Crowley and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 1998-05-15 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composition in the University examines the required introductory course in composition within American colleges and universities. According to Sharon Crowley, the required composition course has never been conceived in the way that other introductory courses have been—as an introduction to the principles and practices of a field of study. Rather it has been constructed throughout much of its history as a site from which larger educational and ideological agendas could be advanced, and such agendas have not always served the interests of students or teachers, even though they are usually touted as programs of study that students "need." If there is a master narrative of the history of composition, it is told in the institutional attitude that has governed administration, design, and staffing of the course from its beginnings—the attitude that the universal requirement is in place in order to construct docile academic subjects. Crowley argues that due to its association with literary studies in English departments, composition instruction has been inappropriately influenced by humanist pedagogy and that modern humanism is not a satisfactory rationale for the study of writing. She examines historical attempts to reconfigure the required course in nonhumanist terms, such as the advent of communications studies during the 1940s. Crowley devotes two essays to this phenomenon, concentrating on the furor caused by the adoption of a communications program at the University of Iowa. Composition in the University concludes with a pair of essays that argue against maintenance of the universal requirement. In the last of these, Crowley envisions possible nonhumanist rationales that could be developed for vertical curricula in writing instruction, were the universal requirement not in place. Crowley presents her findings in a series of essays because she feels the history of the required composition course cannot easily be understood as a coherent narrative since understandings of the purpose of the required course have altered rapidly from decade to decade, sometimes in shockingly sudden and erratic fashion. The essays in this book are informed by Crowley's long career of teaching composition, administering a composition program, and training teachers of the required introductory course. The book also draw on experience she gained while working with committees formed by the Conference on College Composition and Communication toward implementation of the Wyoming Resolution, an attempt to better the working conditions of post-secondary teachers of writing.

Book Teaching and Learning in English Language and Composition

Download or read book Teaching and Learning in English Language and Composition written by David A Jolliffe and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching and Learning in English Language and Composition: Advanced Placement and Beyond is a collection of chapters written by three veteran teachers, each of whom has taught for over 40 years at both the high school and the college level and all of whom have held leadership positions in the Advanced Placement English Language and Composition Program. The chapters dig deep into the intricacies of teaching close, critical reading; unpack insights into using traditional rhetorical forms and canons; and explore a miscellany of issues related to teaching research, fostering student inquiry, and developing effective practices of assessment. While the authors acknowledge and build on their backgrounds with Advanced Placement, the book is not solely focused on issues related to AP. Instead, the book speaks to all secondary and post-secondary English teachers who seek to enfranchise their students as well-informed, savvy consumers and producers of texts, both verbal and visual.
