Book excerpt: This book is about inclusive education, and is designed to prepare teachers to effectively teach exceptional children in primary schools in Southern Africa. It identifies key concepts associated with inclusive education, and discusses these in relation to issues in the reform of teacher education. It argues that the reform of teacher education for inclusive education is an important activity in improving educational equity. The theoretical framework for inclusion is outlined and examples of how teachers might engage in more inclusive practice are presented, as are the benefits of inclusive education. The book argues that preparation for inclusive education requires a new framework that calls for partnership between universities and schools. It is envisaged that the book will fill a gap in literature and practice, thereby enabling policy makers, college administrators and lecturers to review policies, teacher education curricula and pedagogical issues pertaining to preparing teachers for working in inclusive schools. As such, it will provide a springboard for teachers’ colleges and universities to improve teacher preparation for inclusive education.

Most of the participating countries e.g. The United States, South Africa, Canada etc. have gone far in providing inclusive education. However, Nigeria, being one of the countries that recognize Inclusive education, has failed to create conducive atmosphere for the proper take-off of this wonderful educational policy by putting in place all the necessary apparatus needed. Based on this observation, the study was carried out to assess the level of awareness among regular primary and secondary school teachers as well as suitability status of the schools for implementation of inclusion. The study used ten randomly selected schools, and from these schools, 50 teachers were also randomly selected (five from each school). A questionnaire tagged "Baseline Questionnaire for Teachers on Inclusive Education" was used to elicit information on the teachers' level of awareness, as well as the teachers' view on the suitability of the schools for inclusive education practice. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive statistics. The result showed that the teachers' awareness level about inclusive education is very low, and the majority of them also view their schools as unsuitable for accommodating students with special needs. Recommendations based on the findings were made to make Inclusive education a reality in the country.

The school that was selected to participate in this study is located in the semi-rural area in Pinetown district. Learners participated in three focus group sessions. These sessions aimed at gathering data on learners' experiences within classroom environment. Each group consisted of eight learners; that is, four males and four females. Focus group one was selected from grade seven; the second focus group from grade eight and the third group from grade nine. The class teachers of the selected classes were requested to take part in the interview sessions. The sessions intended to gather information on teachers' views about classroom environment and how it impacts on their implementation of Inclusive education.

The Indian Government, through its Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan, advocates the practice of Inclusive Education for children with Special Educational Needs (CWSN). The philosophy of Inclusion asserts that every child should, to the greatest extent possible, study in regular schools. This necessitates schools making adjustments in their routines and eliminating both attitudinal and physical barriers to accommodate the needs of CWSN. This research represents an endeavor to examine the concept of a school-specific Inclusive Education Plan (IEP), meticulously crafted and executed with a specific child and school in mind. The journey from selecting a suitable sample to implementing and evaluating the IEP is systematically detailed across seven chapters. The First Chapter centers on the rationale, title, objectives, and limitations of this study. The Second Chapter aligns this research with the existing body of knowledge in the field of Inclusive Education and the transition from Special to Inclusive Education. The Third Chapter compiles insights drawn from the experiences of fellow researchers. In the Fourth Chapter, we outline the study's design and provide essential details concerning the first four phases. These phases relate to the macro level of the study, encompassing aspects such as teacher awareness of the basic concept of Inclusive Education, the formulation of school-specific awareness training schedules, the execution of in-service teacher training, classroom observations, and the preparation of case profiles and school training needs profiles. The fifth chapter furnishes crucial details pertaining to the subsequent three phases. The primary focus here is on the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the IEP. The Sixth Chapter offers a concise glimpse into the journey beyond this present research. It delves into the major findings, implications for Inclusive schools, suggestions for further research, and the valuable lessons we have gleaned.
