Book Multicultural Education

Download or read book Multicultural Education written by Jo Ann Mored and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to discover teachers' attitudes and perceptions about multicultural education and the resources they had to support a multicultural curriculum. Teachers from a Southern California elementary school were surveyed. This community is experiencing a high volume of population growth due to many new, affordable track homes and a school system with an excellent reputation. The demographics are changing from primarily whites to including many people from different cultures. The survey was handed to the teachers at a staff meeting and contained a total of 11 questions. The teachers completed the surveys and returned them immediately. Their responses were then cross tabulated using a statistical program. Overall, the teachers had positive feelings about including multicultural education in their curriculum. Newer teachers had the strongest feelings about incorporating multicultural education. Most teachers felt the highest level of support from their peers. Some teachers admitted that they did not know the various cultures of their students. Finally, teachers expressed a need for integrated multicultural lessons for their classrooms. Keywords: multicultural education, culture, curriculum, teachers, attitudes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The achievement of students of color continues to be disproportionately low at all levels of education. More than ever, Geneva Gay's foundational book on culturally responsive teaching is essential reading in addressing the needs of today's diverse student population. Combining insights from multicultural education theory and research with real-life classroom stories, Gay demonstrates that all students will perform better on multiple measures of achievement when teaching is filtered through their own cultural experiences. This bestselling text has been extensively revised to include expanded coverage of student ethnic groups: African and Latino Americans as well as Asian and Native Americans as well as new material on culturally diverse communication, addressing common myths about language diversity and the effects of "English Plus" instruction.

Book Doing Diversity Differently in a Culturally Complex World

Download or read book Doing Diversity Differently in a Culturally Complex World written by Megan Watkins and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-10-07 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doing Diversity Differently in a Culturally Complex World explores the challenges facing multicultural education in the 21st century. It argues that the ideas fashioned in 1970s 'multiculturalism' are no longer adequate for the culturally complex world in which we now live. Much multicultural education celebrates superficial forms of difference and avoids difficult questions around culture in an age of transnational flows and hybrid identities. Megan Watkins and Greg Noble explore the understandings of multiculturalism that exist amongst teachers, parents and students. They demonstrate that ideas around culture and identity don't match the complexities of the social contexts of schooling in migrant-based nations such as Australia, the UK, the USA, Canada and New Zealand. Doing Diversity Differently in a Culturally Complex World draws on comprehensive research undertaken in Australian schools. It examines how a diverse range of schools address the challenges that 'superdiversity' poses, considering how the strengths and limitations of each school's approach reflect wider logics of traditional multiculturalism. In contrast, the authors argue for a transformative multiculturalism involving a critically reflexive approach to understanding the processes, relations and identities of the contemporary world. With a Foreword by Fazal Rivzi, Emeritus Professor, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA and Professor of Global Studies in Education, University of Melbourne, Australia.

Book Cultural Diversity Awareness of Elementary Teachers in Georgia Classrooms

Download or read book Cultural Diversity Awareness of Elementary Teachers in Georgia Classrooms written by Sohmer Evans Collins and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: This study determined the extent of cultural diversity awareness of in-service, elementary teachers in Georgia classrooms. The study also determined if different levels of cultural awareness existed between teacher groups in relation to their race/ethnicity, gender, level of education, number of years teaching experience, level of education, and exposure to or experience with multicultural education training. A group of 305 certified, in-service elementary school teachers completed the Cultural Diversity Awareness Inventory, which assessed their beliefs about cultural diversity in five domains: general cultural awareness, culturally diverse families, cross-cultural communication, assessment, and creating a multicultural environment. Results indicated that elementary, in-service teachers are most culturally aware in domain one, general cultural awareness; they are least culturally aware in domain four, assessment. There was not a significant difference between teachers' extent of cultural diversity awareness in the five domains in regards to race, gender, level of education, years teaching experience, and exposure to or experience with multicultural education training. In-service, elementary teachers in Georgia, who are primarily monocultural, realize that the children they serve have cultures different from their own. Teachers understand the importance of identifying the ethnic groups of their students and their families, and they are comfortable in settings with people who exhibit values different from their own. Additionally, in-service, elementary teachers in Georgia classrooms believe in creating a multicultural learning environment in which family views are included in program planning, and they believe in making accommodations for different cultures and learning styles.

Book Multicultural Literature

Download or read book Multicultural Literature written by Luis A. Pelayo Zepeda and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1954, the Supreme Court voted to end segregation in American public schools. However, this landmark decision did not end racism, discrimination, and inequality. Students of color continue to be invisible across the curriculum. This study is a qualitative teacher action research. The purpose of the study was to assess school personnel perceptions and attitudes toward multicultural education in a rural northern California district, and how the implementation of multicultural literature changes perceptions and attitudes in fourth grade students. The setting for the study took place in Steelhead Elementary, located in a rural section of Northern California. Participants included K-8 educators, bilingual aides, and 60 fourth grade students. Teachers were given a survey, engaged in focus groups, and participated in interviews that measured their general cultural awareness. Students participated in a social justice, critical multicultural literacy curriculum. Major findings include lack of teacher cultural diversity awareness, lack of teacher support for multicultural practices, problematic curriculum, and student consciousness development. This research concludes that critical multicultural literature is essential for addressing racism, discrimination, and lack of cultural representation in the classroom.

Book Multicultural and Diversity Issues

Download or read book Multicultural and Diversity Issues written by Barbara N. Young and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to ascertain teachers' multicultural knowledge, cross-cultural perceptions, and attitudes about different cultures as a function of both pre-service professional preparation and graduate education curriculum. Accomplishing this goal required administration of the Multicultural/Diversity Scale?Revised (MCR) at pre/post points. Data were collected from 90 pre-service and 90 in-service teachers. Inquirers used a quantitative descriptive statistical design to analyze these data. Reliability was computed on the instrument which indicated a .90 index. The data collected in this study indicated a significant difference among pre-service students in the category of Acceptance for pre-test data; however, no significant difference emerged in this category for posttest data. Inquirers surmised the difference was not present in posttest data due to the instruction administered during the course between pre-test and posttest data collection.

This book was released on 2021-01-21 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the Nordic model of education still stand by its original principles and safeguard education for all? Based on data from various national and international large-scale assessments, the volume provides a better understanding of both the functions and foundations of the Nordic model, along with how the concepts mentioned above are enacted in practice. The investigations address different subject domains (i.e., mathematics, science, reading), age and grade groups, but also issues related to teachers and the schools themselves. In addition to these empirical chapters, the book addresses the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of the ideas and tools embedded in the phenomena of equity and equality and how they have met in the Nordic model of education.
