Download or read book Beyond Bystanders written by Nimrod Aloni and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-17 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond Bystanders calls for a shift in the professional self-image of teachers from agents of socialization to active advocates of human flourishing, social justice, and world betterment. The editors propose that it is irresponsible for teachers to posit themselves as bystanders and to conceive of globalization as something happening to them. Their role as educators in all disciplines must be to establish educational leadership that would empower students to critically evaluate developing global realities – mass migrations, socioeconomic inequalities, global warming, and the dehumanizing effects of submission to social media and consumerism – and achieve the overarching goals of humanization and facilitation of the fulfilling life. A shared commitment to humanist ethics, pedagogical activism, and social engagement at Kibbutzim College of Education (Tel Aviv) and Wagner College (New York) sparked this collaboration. The authors of the book include educational thinkers such as Nel Noddings, Michael Apple, David Hansen, Pasi Sahlberg, and Wiel Veugelers as well as scholars and practitioners from six different countries and diverse professional and cultural backgrounds. An essential part of our educational enterprise must involve promoting intercultural opportunities, confronting cultural ills and ensuring that civic engagement is more attuned to political realities. Educators in all disciplines can reframe their teaching and schools to be more cooperative and civic-minded and challenge views of marginalized, immigrant, undocumented and refugee communities as strangers. “Education is not only about teaching people to read and to write. It is about teaching human rights and cultural diversity, nourishing peace and fostering inclusive and sustainable development ... I wish to commend Kibbutzim College of Education and Wagner College for joining forces to compile this volume to inspire readers in crafting new models of intellectual and intercultural understanding.” – Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO (from the Foreword)

Book Bystander behaviors in peer victimization

Download or read book Bystander behaviors in peer victimization written by Björn Sjögren and published by Linköping University Electronic Press. This book was released on 2020-12-16 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Peer victimization most often occurs in the presence of bystanders, who play different social roles. They may assist or reinforce those who victimize, defend those who are victimized, or remain passive. The aim of this thesis was to investigate how students’ bystander behaviors in peer victimization are associated with moral disengagement, efficacy beliefs, and student-teacher relationship quality. Self-report questionnaire data were collected from students in grades 4 to 8, and were analyzed using different statistical methods, such as multilevel modeling and structural equation modeling. The findings show that the three types of bystander behaviors are associated with both individual- and classroom-level characteristics. Assisting and reinforcing those who victimize were most strongly associated (positively) with moral disengagement. Defending those who are victimized and remaining passive were most strongly associated (positively and negatively, respectively) with self-efficacy to defend victims. The findings also indicate that the positive association between students’ defending bystander behaviors and their self-efficacy to defend is bidirectional: defending predicts self-efficacy and self-efficacy predicts defending. In line with social cognitive theory, this thesis highlights the importance of considering a complex pattern of factors at different levels when addressing students’ bystander behaviors.

Book excerpt: The majority of children are neither victims nor bullies, but bystanders. They fuel the bully through the validation of their presence. They are the audience, conferring power on the actor. Most children are disturbed by what they see, but afraid of the consequences of action. That inaction itself has consequences, in the feelings of powerlessness that ensue. If they only knew what to do, how to intervene, they could make a profound difference.
