Book You Light Up Our Country

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Bob Herrin grew up on a dairy farm in Oklahoma. He was taught respect and love for others. He was energetic, enjoyed working on the farm and helping his mother. He was strong and quick and had unusual acuteness of vision and hearing. Dr. Herrin worked his way through high school, college, and medical school. He worked forty hours per week, graduated in four years and entered Medical School in Oklahoma with the highest grade point average in his class. He became a general surgeon and entered practice in Marshall, Texas in 1965. He worked a huge number of hours and took emergency call for thirty-five years. He was dedicated to his patients, family and friends. In You Light Up Our Country, Dr. Herrin presents his opinions—formed during his many years as a surgeon —on all the things he believes are affecting our country today, including collected articles from newspapers, magazines and TV, which he uses to validate his opinions and facts. He has great concern about changes in the legal system and government that he believes are injuring the people and nation. He believes his major duty as a citizen is to provide little-known truth and information that is essential to saving our country.

Book Not Light But Fire

Download or read book Not Light But Fire written by Matthew R. Kay and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you feel prepared to initiate and facilitate meaningful, productive dialogues about race in your classroom? Are you looking for practical strategies to engage with your students? Inspired by Frederick Douglass's abolitionist call to action, "it is not light that is needed, but fire" Matthew Kay has spent his career learning how to lead students through the most difficult race conversations. Kay not only makes the case that high school classrooms are one of the best places to have those conversations, but he also offers a method for getting them right, providing candid guidance on: How to recognize the difference between meaningful and inconsequential race conversations. How to build conversational "safe spaces," not merely declare them. How to infuse race conversations with urgency and purpose. How to thrive in the face of unexpected challenges. How administrators might equip teachers to thoughtfully engage in these conversations. With the right blend of reflection and humility, Kay asserts, teachers can make school one of the best venues for young people to discuss race.

Book Researching Pedagogy and Practice with Canadian Mathematics Teachers

Download or read book Researching Pedagogy and Practice with Canadian Mathematics Teachers written by David A Reid and published by IAP. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past two decades have seen an increased interest in education, especially in core areas such as mathematics, language and science. This is in part a consequence of the increase in the number of international comparisons of educational outcomes, such as PISA and TIMSS. Much research has focused on the contributions that curricula, financial resources, parental support, and so on, might have on educational outcomes. A factor that seems likely to have a very significant effect on student achievement, teachers’ practices and beliefs, has received little attention. This book reports results from a research program that sought to develop and employ research methods to compare teachers’ practices and beliefs across Canada. It provides insight into the challenge of such research, and describes teachers’ contexts, beliefs and practices, and how they differ, in four regions and across two languages. Using a multivocal ethnography approach (Tobin, 1999) teachers were involved in the preparation and discussion of videos of their own teaching and that of others. This approach resulted in not only insights into the teachers’ pedagogies and practices, but also opportunities for the teachers to reflect on their own teaching in new ways, and for researchers to reflect on research practices and orientations. The work is innovative in several ways. In a field crowded with research on teachers’ practices, beliefs and knowledge this research helps to unearth the implicit values that underlie the way teachers see teaching itself. Through the process of observation of each other’s practice, the teachers became aware of their own pedagogies, giving them new insights into their values and practices. Researchers also engaged in a parallel process of reflection on their own practices as observers of teachers, with similar insights into the values guiding their work. This book will be of interest to government policy makers, teachers and teacher educators, as well as researchers in Mathematics Education. Members of the AERA SIG in Research in Mathematics Education, the Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group, the NCTM, and provincial Mathematics teacher associations are potential readers. Praise for Researching Pedagogy and Practice with Canadian Mathematics Teachers: What a treasure! This book is an important resource for anyone interested in high quality mathematics teaching. It fills a gap in our understanding of how mathematics is taught across Canada, where students are among the highest performing on international mathematics assessments. The studies reported are conceptually grounded, methodologically rigorous, and filled with nuanced observations of the similarity and variation in classroom teaching across many of the Canadian provinces. Book Developing Children s Critical Thinking through Picturebooks

Download or read book Developing Children s Critical Thinking through Picturebooks written by Mary Roche and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-07-25 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This accessible text will show students and class teachers how they can enable their pupils to become critical thinkers through the medium of picturebooks. By introducing children to the notion of making-meaning together through thinking and discussion, Roche focuses on carefully chosen picturebooks as a stimulus for discussion, and shows how they can constitute an accessible, multimodal resource for adding to literacy skills, while at the same time developing in pupils a far wider range of literary understanding. By allowing time for thinking about and digesting the pictures as well as the text, and then engaging pupils in classroom discussion, this book highlights a powerful means of developing children’s oral language ability, critical thinking, and visual literacy, while also acting as a rich resource for developing children’s literary understanding. Throughout, Roche provides rich data and examples from real classroom practice. This book also provides an overview of recent international research on doing ‘interactive read alouds’, on what critical literacy means, on what critical thinking means and on picturebooks themselves. Lecturers on teacher education courses for early years or primary levels, classroom teachers, pre-service education students, and all those interested in promoting critical engagement and dialogue about literature will find this an engaging and very insightful text.

After a violent outburst, he's heavily drugged and admitted to the VA Hospital. When he awakes three days later, Davies has no idea where he is or what he's done. Faced with a choice between jail time for the damage he caused to police vehicles or to remain at the VA for further observation, Davies opts for a longer hospital stay. Psychiatrist Prescott Brown vows to work with Davies to discover the root of his problems. But Davies--who's been sober for twelve years--feels like a white trash drunk baring his soul to a guy in fifteen hundred dollar loafers. Davies is sure of one thing: He's not about to share the secret of what happened years ago. As Davies recounts his life story to Prescott, the doctor's life is changed by the journey as the two men travel through chaos into clarity.
