Book Teaching Spelling to English Language Learners

Download or read book Teaching Spelling to English Language Learners written by Johanna Stirling and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2011-02-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book for anyone teaching English spelling, particularly those working with English language learners. This essential manual answers three challenging questions about teaching spelling: Why is there a problem with teaching and learning spelling? What can be done about it? How can this be accomplished? The first part of the book helps teachers understand the systems of English spelling and the regularities, which are not necessarily phonological. It explores the errors that learners really make and the challenges faced by teachers. The second part outlines a fresh, new, multi-dimensional approach to teaching spelling which recognises the need for learner engagement and strategy training as well as work on the patterns found in English orthography. The final part of the book presents over seventy engaging and effective activities which are designed to develop a range of strategies and knowledge about English spelling.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teacher's Manual of Spelling The complaint is very common today that the present age is one of poor spellers. Business men particularly are prone to lament the fact that our present system of education does not turn out children as skilled in the intricacies of English spelling as were those of the good old days. These same business men further stipulate that the particular point of defect in our present system is lack of thoroughness and drill. The truth is that many children spell as well as children have ever spelled and acquire their mastery of words in a much shorter time and with much less effort than would have been possible under the old formal system of education. Actual tests of spelling ability show that the average skill in large groups is about the same today as that of similar groups twenty-five years ago. It is true that every class in almost every school has a certain percentage of disgracefully poor spellers, and that these children drag through the seventh and eighth grades and often through high school without ever really learning to spell. As a matter of fact there has never been a time in our educational history when this has not been more or less true. If our modern psychology has the value we claim for it, it should have given us methods by which all children of normal mentality could be taught to spell. The reasons why we still have so many spelling failures seem to be: First, that certain psychological fallacies have crept into our theory of teaching spelling, and, second, that the erroneous supposition has been made that modern methods eliminate the need for drill. This book is not theoretical; it is the result of five years experimental work with the problem. Over four hundred very poor spellers have been carefully examined and finally taught to spell. Book How to Teach Spelling

Download or read book How to Teach Spelling written by Eps and published by Educators Publishing Services. This book was released on 2003-09-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to Teach Spelling is a comprehensive resource manual, and corresponding workbooks provide a structured and graded method to plan spelling lessons. The manual contains the material to be used at all grade levels. At the beginning of each lesson, the manual explains which words to cover for the grade level you are working with. The workbooks teach spelling rules and generalizations, provide space for copying words, and indicate when students should write words, phrases, and/or sentences from dictation. The workbooks help students understand and practice the material. How to Teach Spelling is an excellent program for teachers who want their students to learn to recognize the sounds in the English language, to decode words, and to spell words correctly by relying on spelling rules and patterns rather than on memory. Please note this is only the manual.
