Book Teacher Perspectives of Student Readiness for Success in Ninth Grade

Download or read book Teacher Perspectives of Student Readiness for Success in Ninth Grade written by Carrie Emma Thorpe and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to discover if the perceptions of 8th and 9th grade core teachers concerning the impact of the 8th to 9th grade student transition align with actual student success in ninth grade. Nineteen core subject teachers participated, 7 eighth grade teachers, and 12 ninth grade teachers, from 2 school districts in southeastern Pennsylvania participated in the study. The researcher examined the responses of the 19 participants who completed an online survey and also interviewed one 8th grade teacher and two ninth grade teachers. Results of the study indicate that in the 2 participating school districts, both 8th and 9th grade teachers believe critical thinking, creativity, problem solving, communication, and strong study skills to be the most significant factors that contribute to academic and social success in ninth grade. It was also found that both 8th and 9th grade teachers believe it is important for 8th and 9th grade teachers to view the 8th to 9th grade transition in a similar manner. Open-ended responses revealed that 9th grade teachers believe their current transition practices to be inadequate and 8th grade teachers believe there is a lack of communication between the 8th and 9th grade teaching staff. Although most 8th and 9th grade teachers believed that 9th grade students lacked academic skills necessary for success, an analysis of 9th grade student academic performance data for the 2011-2012, 2012-2013 school years, as well as the first marking period of the 2013-2014 school year, indicate that student academic performance is very strong.

Book Engaging the Ninth Grade Mind

Download or read book Engaging the Ninth Grade Mind written by Holly L. Whitworth and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this case study was to examine ninth grade student engagement at a comprehensive urban high school. Six hundred fifty ninth grade students were invited to participate in the High School Survey of Student Engagement (HSSSE). Of this group of ninth grade students, 10 were invited to participate in a focus group interview to closely look at individual cases of student disengagement and to understand the students' perspectives of their own disengagement. In addition, 10 teachers participated in individual interviews to gain an understanding of the different teaching methods utilized for lesson design and delivery in different content areas. Data collected sought to answer three research questions: (a) What are the contributing factors to ninth grade student disengagement/engagement in a large comprehensive, urban public high school?, (b) How do teachers impact ninth grade student disengagement/engagement?, (c) How does the transition between middle and high school address students' academic, behavioral, and emotional disengagement needs? The findings identified that connection, relationships, and availability of staff influenced student engagement in school. The research identified that school staff have the ability to facilitate engagement by connecting students' background knowledge to the curriculum being taught in different subjects within the classroom. It was also identified that there is a need for students and their families to be connected to the larger school community. It is recommended that school staff and teachers develop positive relationships with students and families before and as students enter high school. It is recommended that administrators develop and maintain positive behavior support systems for all students in all high school grades to maintain a positive school culture. In addition, teachers need systematic support to effectively incorporate engagement strategies and plan effective academic lessons.

Book Building a Foundation for Freshman

Download or read book Building a Foundation for Freshman written by and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this case study was to examine the supports provide by school leadership to academically and socially prepare ninth grade students for high school. A quarter of students who endeavor to make academic and social progress are those who have just transitioned to high school as, ninth-grade students. The study used the qualitative case study methodology. For this purpose of this study, the case includes the school leaders and grade-level teachers at one middle school and one high school to examine various elements of the eighth to ninth grade transition. Through the interviews of 14 participants the researcher was able to explore and analyze leaders’ expectations for ninth grade students, and how those expectations shape the academic and social difficulties for ninth-grade students. The data from the 14 participants provided evidence that there warrants further examination for further examination of the ninth grade transition process at to foster academic and social preparedness of ninth grade students. This study found that there is a clear lack of systems and resources present for ninth grade students to academically and socially prepare for ninth grade. The implications of this study were offered to promote student academic and social success. These implications can serve to prevent further decline in the academic and social preparation of ninth grade students. The struggle to successfully transition ninth grade students into high school is indicative of the additional attention and resources needed for ninth-grade students.

Book excerpt: Teaching Again exposes the very human core of the teaching experience. This book is not just about teaching English/language arts; it is about the heart and soul of the vocation that is teaching. It is also not just about Tom Poetter, the English teacher; it is about every individual who has ever tried to educate, whether that act has taken place in a classroom, a church or synagogue, a museum, or at the kitchen table. Teaching Again brings to life the dance of questions that vie for attention in the mind of a teacher: How do I convince students that they want to learn to what I’m trying to teach? How do I make them understand that this is really actually important to them? And, perhaps most important, how do I get them to like me, and my discipline, in the process? These are the questions that all good teachers ask themselves at the beginning, middle, and end of every single day of their professional lives. Every moment of teaching is a human transaction, and Tom brings us right into the middle of that transaction. He allows the reader to see and hear and feel the tension of the tightrope he has chosen to walk with these students. The reader is right there for the thrilling “ah-ha!” moments, and we experience the anguish of his defeats.

Book excerpt: Research has proven that to help students become better prepared for their futures, being exposed to college and career readiness information at an earlier age is crucial. This project explores the background of college and career readiness and provides supporting evidence as to why it is more prevalent today within the education system. The project addressed the issue of students not being prepared for life after graduation, whether they continue their education or enter straight into a career. Through analyzing different theories, both social cognitive career theory (SCCT) and Conley’s four keys to college and career readiness model, the foundation and lens through which this problem is observed. Book Everybody Needs To Feel Like Somebody

Download or read book Everybody Needs To Feel Like Somebody written by Stephen W. Zsiray and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ninth grade poses unique academic, physical, social, and emotional challenges to students; in fact, it may be the defining year for predicting high school success. It could also be the last chance to catch pupils who are in danger of dropping out of school. The Freshman Center program attempts to give ninth graders the opportunity to succeed. This paper describes the program, presents a case study of two Freshman Centers, and includes many questions and responses about the program. The North and South Cache Freshman Centers were organized to meet those unique needs of ninth graders as they move through the transition to high school. Curriculum, accountability, and quality control were important elements of the ninth grade program development. The South Cache Freshman Center (510 students) promotes success, respect, and responsibility by developing a Student Educational and Occupational Plan (SEOP) and a portfolio for each student. Additionally, 15 to 20 hours are spent with students exploring careers and charting a direction through high school. The North Cache Freshman Center (600 students) utilizes integrated interdisciplinary units and SEOPs to prepare the ninth graders for a progressive high school with competency-based teaching. An outline of the 1995-96 South Cache Freshman Center schedule is included. (LSR).

Book Promoting Student Success

Download or read book Promoting Student Success written by Micah Lonae Smith and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this mixed-methods study is to evaluate the impact of Morrison High School’s ninth grade transition program, the Freshman Academy, on student outcomes. Based on the outcomes, decisions will be made to determine if the Freshman Academy is meeting students’ needs or if the program elements need to be revisited to improve student achievement. Participants included teachers, school counselors, and administrators at Morrison High School in southeastern Virginia. The study employed the product component of the CIPP model of program evaluation to guide the data collection and to determine the merit, worth, and significance of the program. Quantitative data were collected using student outcome data based on GPA, attendance rates, number of discipline referrals, pass rates on Virginia Standards of Learning End of Course tests, and credits earned. Qualitative data were collected based on teacher, school counselor, and administrator interviews. Successes and challenges of the program as well as areas of recommended improvement are detailed in this study. Analysis of student outcome data revealed that students participating in the program are consistently meeting the benchmark intended outcomes for attendance, discipline, and credits earned and most students are passing the Algebra I and World Geography SOLs during the last year included in this study. Continuous monitoring and evaluation of the program elements can only assist teams in providing stronger transition programs to help students achieve the intended outcomes. Recommendations for future research and program improvement include collaboration between the Freshman Academy teachers and administrators with the eighth grade teachers and administrators at the feeder middle schools, developing a summer bridge program to target at-risk students, and increasing parental involvement and seeking their feedback on the Freshman Academy.
