Book Culture Poverty and Education

Download or read book Culture Poverty and Education written by Michele Wages and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-10-30 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most changes in education—including the rise of standardized testing, holding teachers accountable for their students’ academic performance, and rewriting math and reading standards—don’t address poverty. Understanding the relationship between poverty, class, and education for decades has been framed through studies on the behavior and culture of poor students and their families. Educators are caught up in the history of classism and are often guilty of buying into the mindset—including the implementation of activities and strategies for working with ‘parents’ in poverty or ‘students’ in poverty—that leads them to believe in the need to ‘fix’ the poor instead of eliminating the inequities that oppress them. So it is not just one or the other; nature or nurture, poor or not poor. Poverty is a potential outcome for all of us. Culture, Poverty, and Education: What’s Happening in Today’s Schools? is intended to not only discuss 5 myths about the culture of poverty and its effects on education, but provide some resources on alternatives for educator’s to better address this growing barrier to student achievement in today’s schools.

Book excerpt: The majority of American Indian students attend public schools in the United States. However, education mandated for American Indian students since the 1800s has been primarily education for assimilation, with the goal of eliminating American Indian cultures and languages. Indeed, extreme measures were taken to ensure Native students would “act white” as a result of their involvement with Western education. Today’s educational mandates continue a hegemonic “one-size-fits-all” approach to education. This is in spite of evidence that these approaches have rarely worked for Native students and have been extremely detrimental to Native communities. This book provides information about the importance of teaching American Indian students by bridging home and schools, using students’ cultural capital as a springboard for academic success. Culturally Responsive Pedagogy is explored from its earliest beginnings following the 1928 Meriam Report. Successful education of Native students depends on all involved and respect for the voices of American Indians in calling for education that holds high expectations for native students and allows them to be grounded in their cultures and languages.

Book Creating Culturally Responsive Schools

Download or read book Creating Culturally Responsive Schools written by Michele Wages and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With so much cultural mixing in today’s classrooms, teachers no longer have a choice as to whether they want to interact with diversity or not. It is imperative that educators become culturally competent. By studying the cultural backgrounds of their students, teachers can learn to avoid some of the problems that surface each day in the public school classroom. Today’s classrooms are extremely diverse and many educators are not prepared for the increasing need for culturally responsive teaching. Creating Culturally Responsive Schools: One Classroom at a Time strives to help teachers discover not only what it means to be a culturally responsive educator, but also how to strengthen a schools’ staff in cultural awareness, respect, and value and how to use this knowledge to increase all student achievement. Each chapter is self-sufficient allowing the reader to utilize only those parts of the book needed. This is an invaluable educator resource addressing current classroom demographics.

Book Handbook of Research on Reconceptualizing Preservice Teacher Preparation in Literacy Education

This book was released on 2021-12-17 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As it stands, there is currently a void in education literature in how to best prepare preservice teachers to meet the needs of individualized learners across multiple learning platforms, social/economical contexts, language variety, and special education needs. The subject is in dire need of support for the ongoing improvement of administrative, clinical, diagnostic, and instructional practices related to the learning process. The Handbook of Research on Reconceptualizing Preservice Teacher Preparation in Literacy Education stimulates the professional development of preservice and inservice literacy educators and researchers. This book also promotes the excellence in preservice and inservice literacy both nationally and internationally. Discussing topics such as virtual classrooms, critical literacy, and teacher preparation, this book serves as an ideal resource for tenure- track faculty in literacy education, clinical faculty, field supervisors who work with preservice teacher educators, community college faculty, university faculty who are in the midst of reconceptualizing undergraduate teacher education curriculum, mentor teachers working with preservice teachers, district personnel, researchers, students, and curricula developers who wish to understand the needs of preservice teacher education.
