Finding out what causes the disease is part of the treatment. Asthma affects 12-15 million Americans with more than 5 percent of all children below the age of 18 reported having asthma attacks (NIH, 2002). It is important for members of the health care community to teach the patient and the families about asthma and its care. Children with asthma have an increased risk for complications, due to limited access to medications. Nurses must take the initiative in educating patients about recurring respiratory symptoms and asthma. This paper presents a questionnaire used to assess patients' control of their disease; the implementation of a patient education program that discusses the diagnosis, treatment, use of medications, and self-care information with regards to asthma; and the evaluation of that teaching. The Health Belief Model and Knowles' theory of androgogy were used as the theoretical framework guiding this teaching project. The group teaching session for this project lasted about 3 hours. The group consisted of eleven women ranging from 21 to 60. Pre- and post-teaching questionnaires used to evaluate the participants' knowledge regarding asthma and their care. This teaching project demonstrated that reaching patients about their care. This teaching project demonstrated that teaching patients about their disease and medications improved their knowledge related to the need for compliance, and may reduce the number of emergency room visits.
