Download or read book Danger All Around written by Joel B. Goldsteen and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the next twenty-five years, the equivalent of more than 3,000 Astrodomes will be needed to hold the compacted trash and garbage of the Houston area alone. Depending on the depth of the waste, as much as thirty square miles could be filled by the cities of Dallas and New Orleans. The problem of where to store waste has grabbed a lot of headlines recently, but people have been slow to realize that the environmental damage caused by storage sites is an even greater menace. This book makes the danger clear, as Joel Goldsteen offers the first comprehensive look at the selection and environmental impact of municipal and petrochemical waste storage sites along the Texas and Louisiana coasts. Goldsteen has distilled a large landfill-worth of data into a highly readable account of the creation and regulation of waste disposal sites, the health issues that surround them, and the human and natural factors that affect how safe or dangerous they become. Chapters that describe industrial development along the Gulf Coast and the concurrent challenges of wastewater treatment, solid waste management, and hazardous waste control are followed by in-depth descriptions of nine Texas and four Louisiana sites. The strength of DANGER ALL AROUND lies in the connection Goldsteen draws between land use planning and environmental protection. He documents how industrial facilities are usually located with little, if any, consideration for their impact on people and the environment, even though such facilities almost always produce toxic discharges. He offers hard evidence to local governments seeking to initiate permanent local regulatory change. In addition to charting the scope of the problem and the failure of federal and state authorities to deal with the waste storage crisis in more than piecemeal fashion, DANGER ALL AROUND offers possible solutions. Revisions to current comprehensive plans, zoning and subdivision ordinances, capital budgeting, the creation of local review boards, and the condemnation of land surrounding certain industrial sites are just a few of the planning tools Goldsteen suggests for existing and newly developed areas. In a time of growing environmental awareness, DANGER ALL AROUND sounds a frightening warning of what can happen if current heedless land usage continues. Representative of problems far beyond the Texas-Louisiana coast, the book will be crucial reading for everyone involved in urban planning, industrial development, and environmental protection.

Book Water for Texas

Download or read book Water for Texas written by Jim Norwine and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than the economy, more than changing demographics, evenmore than education, water is the key to the future of Texas. It is not much of an overstatement to claim that water is the future of Texas. In the fall of 2000, a conference on "the world's most crucial natural resource" was held at Texas A&M University. It was a gathering of people with many viewpoints and areas of expertise, all focused on what the book's editors rightly say is and will be the state's definingissue--water. Together, the observations and recommendations brought together in this volume represent some of the best thinking about Texas' connections with water--in the past, present, and future. Ranging from broad historical overviews to technical and scientific discussions, the chapters address the questions of where we have been and where we are headed as we enter a new century of challenges to provide water for Texas.

Book excerpt: It is difficult to believe that our planet has been weaponized before our very eyes, but that is exactly what has happened. First, we were seduced by the convenience of a wireless world; then, atmospheric weather experimentation in the guise of carbons “climate change” converted the air we breathe into an antenna. Now, the geo-engineering we’ve been subjected to for two decades is being normalized as the “Star Wars” Space Fence rises around and within us. Is this the Space Age we were promised?

Book Introduction to Hydrology

Book Underground Injection Science and Technology

Download or read book Underground Injection Science and Technology written by C-F. Tsang and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-12-28 with total page 731 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chapters by a distinguished group of international authors on various aspects of Underground Injection Science and Technology are organized into seven sections addressing specific topics of interest. In the first section the chapters focus on the history of deep underground injection as well regulatory issues, future trends and risk analysis. The next section contains ten chapters dealing with well testing and hydrologic modeling. Section 3, consisting of five chapters, addresses various aspects of the chemical processes affecting the fate of the waste in the subsurface environment. Consideration is given here to reactions between the waste and the geologic medium, and reactions that take place within the waste stream itself. The remaining four sections deal with experience relating to injection of, respectively, liquid wastes, liquid radioactive wastes in Russia, slurried solids, and compressed carbon dioxide. Chapters in Section 4, cover a diverse range of other issues concerning the injection of liquid wastes including two that deal with induced seismicity. In Section 5, Russian scientists have contributed several chapters revealing their knowledge and experience of the deep injection disposal of high-level radioactive liquid processing waste. Section 6 consists of five chapters that cover the technology surrounding the injection disposal of waste slurries. Among the materials considered are drilling wastes, bone meal, and biosolids. Finally, four chapters in Section 7 deal with questions relating to carbon dioxide sequestration in deep sedimentary aquifers. This subject is particularly topical as nations grapple with the problem of controlling the buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. * Comprehensive coverage of the state of the art in underground injection science and technology * Emerging subsurface waste disposal technologies * International scope
