Thomas Van Dyck of Amsterdam was the 16th-century patriarch whose story opens the book, and the author also includes helpful background information on Holland's golden age of exploration and the Dutch East India Company. Thomas' son, Jan Van Dyck, and his family immigrated to New Amsterdam in 1652, eventually settling in New Utrecht on Long Island. Jan Jansen Van Dyck was the third generation, and his son John Van Dyck participated in the large Dutch migration (c.1711) to the Millstone Valley in Middlesex and Somerset Counties in the prerevolutionary province of New Jersey. The subsequent generations of Van Dyck farmers in New Jersey were well-respected, patriotic members of such communities as New Brunswick, Princeton, Trenton, Ten Mile Run, Penns Neck, Rocky Hill, Harlingen, Griggstown, Bridgepoint, Kingston, Millstone, Somerville, Franklin, Montgomery and West Windsor. When they deemed the time appropriate, some of these hard-working and versatile Dutch broke with the farm tradition to enter upon various commercial occupations and the professions, as exemplified in the final chapter and appendices of the book. Every chapter opens with a genealogical note that provides vital statistics such as birth, marriage and death dates. The names of spouses and children are always included in the narrative accounts of the subjects. Numerous appendices furnish additional details, often through transcriptions of original wills, deeds, military records, etc. A bibliography and separate indices for subjects and surnames are included. Book excerpt: A tragedy of Virginian colonial frontier In the summer of 1786 a large war party of Shawnee Indians entered Abb's Valley, Virginia, and descended on the household of militia officer Captain John Moore which included members of his immediate family together with hired labourers. The family occupied a substantial log building and were well armed, so Moore believed that his family was well placed to fight off a small Indian attack. The nearest homestead was six miles away and Moore, relying on his own abilities, thought it unnecessary to follow the example of neighbours by taking refuge in the nearest fort. The attack achieved complete surprise and Moore was killed before he could reach the safety of the house. What followed was an appalling, but typical, Indian massacre of the colonial period frontier in the 18th century. Various family members, young and old, were slaughtered on the spot, the property was set alight and a substantial herd of livestock was taken. Surviving members of the Moore family were taken as captives to the Indian townships, several of them being murdered on the journey. Once the survivors reached the Indian village there followed another period of torture which for Mrs. Moore and a teenage daughter proved fatal. Two young women survived their ordeals to eventually be ransomed. The story of this notable frontier tragedy was written by James Moore, a son of Mary Moore, who was one of the two ransomed captives. This a vital account of the struggles endured by the early settlers of the American wilderness and will be of essential interest to anyone interested in the early history of the state of Virginia. Book excerpt: The unit was chiefly organized andcommanded by Lt. Col. Vincent A. Witcher. Early in the war, Witcher and the 1st Battalion Virginia Mounted Rifles (precursor to the 34th) developed a dual reputation. One Confederate officer commented that Witcher could not pass up a farm that had a fine horse in the field. Most disparaging remarks, however were initiated by the bitter John b. Floyd, a political general and past governor of Virginia. Merited or not, Floyd's use of polemics helped to establish a tainted reputation for the unit, that was perpetuated by Yankee officers. Witcher and the 34th Battalion were greatly appreciated by other Confederate officers though. The immortal J.E.B. Stuart and Robert E. Lee, each highly praised the unit, and Stuart wrote an enviable commendation for Witcher. The unit, more often than not, was placed in the forefront of action. Brigade commanders were cibfudebt if the 34th ability to fight and emerge from even the most dangerous situations.
