Book A Classification of the Scale Insect Genus Asterolecanium

Download or read book A Classification of the Scale Insect Genus Asterolecanium written by Louise May Russell and published by . This book was released on 1941 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revisionary study of the genus Asterolecanium has evolved from unsuccessful attempts to identify accurately an injurious member of the genus which evidently was introduced into the United States and from difficulty experienced in satisfying numerous requests for correct identifications of other economically important species. Consideration of literature and specimens in these efforts disclosed a degree of confusion regarding many of the especially destructive species which could be clarified only through a critical classificatory review of the kind here presented. In this publication the writer has attempted to provide descriptions and illustrations adequate for the identification of the intended species and a classification of these species based primarily on a critical study of their morphology.

Book Scale Insects of Central Europe

Download or read book Scale Insects of Central Europe written by M. Kosztarab and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to the scientists whose professional devotion and accomplish ments in research on scale insects of the area made the compilation of this book possible. This book has two primary objectives: (1) to enable interested workers, who are not specialists of scale insects, to recognize and indentify these to families, genera and species; and (2) to provide information on the life cycle, host-plant range, natural enemies, geographical distribution, economic importance for each known species from Central Europe, and to provide a bibliography on each taxa covered. Scale insects are important pests of fruit and nut trees, forest vegetation, woody ornamentals, greenhouse and indoor plants. World-wide losses and increased production costs attributed to scale insects are estimated to reach $5 billion annually. It is difficult to recognize them because of their microscopic size and hidden habits. Identification of pest species enables plant growers to check appropriate reference sources for biological information and to select control methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Blattidae of North America: North of the Mexican Boundary Detailed descriptions of each genus and species in the present paper were deemed inadvisable, but careful analyses of the features of real differential value are given as well as full descriptions of coloration. Particular attention is also given to the range of vari ation in each species, as confusion in subsequent work is much the more likely to occur upon encountering features representing mere individual, though striking, variations. Book The Economic Importance of Insects

Download or read book The Economic Importance of Insects written by Dennis S. Hill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last few decades there has been an ever-increasing component in most BSc Zoology degree courses of cell biology, physiology and genetics, for spectacular developments have taken place in these fields. Some aspects of biotechnology are now also being included. In order to accommodate the new material, the old zoology courses were altered and the traditional two-year basis of systematics of the animal kingdom, comparative anatomy (and physiology) and evolution, was either severely trimmed or reduced and presented in an abridged form under another title. Soon after these course alterations came the swing to modular teaching in the form of a series of shorter, separate courses, some of which were optional. The entire BSc degree course took on a different appearance and several different basic themes became possible. One major result was that in the great majority of cases taxonomy and systematics were no longer taught and biology students graduated without this basic training. We field biologists did appreciate the rising interest in ecology and environ mental studies, but at the same time lamented the shortage of taxonomic skills, so that often field work was based on incorrect identifications. For years many of us with taxonomic inclinations have been bedevilled by the problem of teaching systematics to undergraduates. At a guess, maybe only 5% of students find systematics interesting. It is, however, the very basis of all studies in biology - the correct identification of the organism concerned and its relationships to others in the community.

Book Biological Control by Augmentation of Natural Enemies

Download or read book Biological Control by Augmentation of Natural Enemies written by R. Ridgway and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The protection of agricultural crops, forest, and man and his domestic animals from annoyance and damage by various kinds of pests remains a chronic problem. As we endeavor to improve pro duction processes and to develop more effective and acceptable tactics for achieving this protection, we must give high priority to all potentially useful techniques for the control and management of insects. Pest control is recognized as an acceptable and necessary part of modern agriculture. Methods employed vary greatly and tend to reflect compromises involving 3 determining factors: technological capability, economic feasibility, and social acceptability. How ever, these factors are also subject to change with time since each involves value judgments that are based on available information, cost, benefit considerations, the seriousness of the pest problem, and the political climate. Whatever method is chosen, energy resources continue to dwindle under the impact of increasing popu lation, and it is inevitable that greater reliance must be placed upon renewable resources in pest management. One alternative is the use of a pest management method that uses the energy of the pest's own biomass to fuel a self-perpetuating control system. The use of biological control agents for the control of pests has long been an integral part of the pest management strategy in crop production and forestry and in the protection of man and animals. The importance and unique advantages of the method are well recognized; numerous treatises deal with accomplishments and methodologies.
