Book Taxonomic and Nomenclatural Changes in the Anticheirine Scarabs Coleoptera Scarabaeidae Rutelinae Rutelini

Download or read book Taxonomic and Nomenclatural Changes in the Anticheirine Scarabs Coleoptera Scarabaeidae Rutelinae Rutelini written by Matthew Robert Moore and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We clarify the taxonomy and nomenclature of several species-group names and the family-group name for the anticheirine scarabs (Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Rutelini), a group that includes nearly 550 species and subspecies in 44 genera and subgenera. These clarifi cations are necessary due to taxonomic and nomenclatural inaccuracies in recent revisionary works. We provide a list of genera included in the anticheirine scarabs sensu Soula. Numerous nomenclatural changes are necessary due to invalid type designations or misspellings: the valid type species of Aequatoria Arrow is Chlorota associata Waterhouse; the valid type species of Chlorota Burmeister is Rutela terminata Le Peletier de Saint-Fargeau and Audinet-Serville; the valid type species of Dorysthetus Blanchard is Macraspis chlorophana Burmeister; the valid type species of Anticheira Eschscholtz is Scarabaeus virens Drury. ...

Book CRC World Dictionary of Palms

Download or read book CRC World Dictionary of Palms written by Umberto Quattrocchi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-08-03 with total page 3591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Foreword Umberto Quattrocchi has brought us some amazing and useful works through the various dictionaries that he has compiled. This time it is for two very important plant families the palms and the cycads that are synthesized here in these two volumes. Each entry is fascinating not just for the botany and full nomenclature of the plant species but for all the associated uses, folklore and interactions with other organisms. ...These entries are fascinating glimpses of natural history. ... Botanists, conservationists, ethnobotanists, anthropologists, geographers, bird watchers, naturalists, historians and those of many other disciplines will find these volumes a most valuable and useful resource. It is the sort of book that will be in frequent use in my library. ----- Professor Sir Ghillean Prance FRS, VMH, Former Director, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew Following the same format as Umberto Quattrocchi’s highly praised and well-used previous works, The CRC World Dictionary of Palms: Common Names, Scientific Names, Eponyms, Synonyms, and Etymology brings together the vast and scattered literature on palms and cycads to provide better access to information on these economically important plants. Each genus and species has a detailed morphological description and includes a list of synonyms and vernacular names in many languages. Bibliographies accompany each entry which are comprehensive, up-to-date and multi-lingual. The detailed information for every entry on habitats, economic uses, historical and biographical data, botanical exploration, and linguistics will be useful for any library involved with botany, herbal medicine, pharmacognosy, medicinal and natural product chemistry, ecology, ethnobotany, systematics, general plant science, agriculture or horticulture. Umberto Quattrocchi is the author of the bestselling CRC World Dictionary of Plant Names, winner of the prestigious Hanbury Botanical Garden Award. His most recent multi-volume work, CRC World Dictionary of Medicinal and Poisonous Plants, received strong praise as being "... an unparalleled starting place—a tool of first resort for any thoughtful researcher. Quattrocchi and CRC have delivered a dictionary like no other, a learned finger pointing in the right direction." —John de la Parra, Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts, USA, from Economic Botany, Vol. 68, 2014

This book was released on 2023-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work is a taxonomic revision of 28 species of the genus Chrysina Kirby (Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Rutelini) found in Panama (25), Colombia (2), and Ecuador (3). Chrysina tricolor (Ohaus), Chrysina chalcothea (Bates), and Chrysina cupreomarginata (F. Bates) are new records for Panama. A new country record from northern Colombia is confirmed for Chrysina mercedesae Barria. Chrysina gaitalica Curoe and Hawks and Chrysina galbina Hawks are discovered at new localities in Panama; females of both species are discovered and described. Chrysina aurora (Bates) known from other localities in the west of the country, is rediscovered in Veraguas province 147 years after its description based on a female, the only specimen that had been collected in the province. Chrysina wolfi (Ohaus) is placed as a new junior synonym of Chrysina argenteola (Bates). A neotype is designated for Chrysina ohausi (Franz) according to ICZN Article 75.3. The oreicola group is proposed to include Chrysina oreicola (Morón). Photographs of adults, illustrations of diagnostic characters, distribution maps, and taxonomic keys (in English and Spanish) for the identification of the species present in Panama, Colombia and Ecuador are presented.

With approximately 350,000 described species, Coleoptera are by far the most species-rich order of insects and the largest group of animals of comparable geological age. The beetle volumes will meet the demand of modern biologists seeking to answer questions about Coleoptera phylogeny, evolution, and ecology. This first Coleoptera volume covers the suborders Archostemata, Myxophaga and Adephaga, and the basal series of Polyphaga, with information on world distribution, biology, morphology of all life stages (including anatomy), phylogeny and comments on taxonomy.

Book Dung Beetle Ecology

  • Author : Ilkka Hanski
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press

Download or read book Dung Beetle Ecology written by Ilkka Hanski and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many ecosystems dung beetles play a crucial role--both ecologically and economically--in the decomposition of large herbivore dung. Their activities provide scientists with an excellent opportunity to explore biological community dynamics. This collection of essays offers a concise account of the population and community ecology of dung beetles worldwide, with an emphasis on comparisons between arctic, temperate, and tropical species assemblages. Useful insights arise from relating the vast differences in species' life histories to their population and community-level consequences. The authors also discuss changes in dung beetle faunas due to human-caused habitat alteration and examine the possible effects of introducing dung beetles to cattle-breeding areas that lack efficient native species. "With the expansion of cattle breeding areas, the ecology of dung beetles is a subject of great economic concern as well as one of intense theoretical interest. This excellent book represents an up-to-date ecological study covering important aspects of the dung beetle never before presented."--Gonzalo Halffter, Instituto de Ecologia, Mexico City Originally published in 1991. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.
