Book Convict Tattoos

  • Author : Simon Barnard
  • Publisher : Text Publishing
  • Release : 2016-08-29
  • ISBN : 1925410234
  • Pages : 128 pages

Download or read book Convict Tattoos written by Simon Barnard and published by Text Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At least thirty-seven per cent of male convicts and fifteen per cent of female convicts were tattooed by the time they arrived in the penal colonies, making Australians quite possibly the world's most heavily tattooed English-speaking people of the nineteenth century. Each convict’s details, including their tattoos, were recorded when they disembarked, providing an extensive physical account of Australia's convict men and women. Simon Barnard has meticulously combed through those records to reveal a rich pictorial history. Convict Tattoos explores various aspects of tattooing—from the symbolism of tattoo motifs to inking methods, from their use as means of identification and control to expressions of individualism and defiance—providing a fascinating glimpse of the lives of the people behind the records. Simon Barnard was born and grew up in Launceston. He spent a lot of time in the bush as a boy, which led to an interest in Tasmanian history. He is a writer, illustrator and collector of colonial artifacts. He now lives in Melbourne. He won the Eve Pownall Award for Information Books in the 2015 Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book of the Year awards for his first book, A-Z of Convicts in Van Diemen’s Land. Convict Tattoos is his second book. ‘The early years of penal settlement have been recounted many times, yet Convict Tattoos genuinely breaks new ground by examining a common if neglected feature of convict culture found among both male and female prisoners.’ Australian ‘This niche subject has proved fertile ground for Barnard—who is ink-free—by providing a glimpse into the lives of the people behind the historical records, revealing something of their thoughts, feelings and experiences.’ Mercury 'The best thing to happen in Australian tattoo history since Cook landed. A must-have for any tattoo historian.’ Brett Stewart, Australian Tattoo Museum

Download or read book Tattoo Histories written by Sinah Theres Kloß and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-25 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tattoo Histories is an edited volume which analyses and discusses the relevance of tattooing in the socio-cultural construction of bodies, boundaries, and identities, among both individuals and groups. Its interdisciplinary approach facilitates historical as well as contemporary perspectives. Rather than presenting a universal, essentialized history of tattooing, the volume’s objective is to focus on the entangled and transcultural histories, narratives, and practices related to tattoos. Contributions stem from various fields, including Archaeology, Art History, Classics, History, Linguistics, Media and Literary Studies, Social and Cultural Anthropology, and Sociology. They advance the current endeavour on the part of tattoo scholars to challenge Eurocentric and North American biases prevalent in much of tattoo research, by including various analyses based in locations such as Malaysia, Israel, East Africa, and India. The thematic focus is on the transformative capacity of tattoos and tattooing, with regard to the social construction of bodies and subjectivity; the (re-)creation of social relationships through the definition of (non-)tattooed others; the formation and consolidation of group identities, traditions, and authenticity; and the conceptualization of art and its relevance to tattoo artist–tattooee relations.

People of His time thought He was Elijah, a fiery prophet they rejected due to his repentance message. Jesus continued that same message. Jesus was a man's man with a compassionate and merciful heart towards others. He healed everyone and spoke to storms and demons in a commanding voice. Jesus didn't pretend. Do we really know Jesus?Would you like a glimpse of this mysterious God? Is it possible that you have more in common with Jesus than you know? Love of art, color and body art, even? In Tattooed King, Unraveling the Mystery of Jesus you will learn what Jesus meant when He taught in parables, replacing mystery with what His Kingdom of the heart looks like. One need not be a trained detective to understand the Father's heart. Each chapter presents a different Kingdom principle revealing God's character, His preferences and dislikes, His attractiveness and perspective. He truly reveals Himself unceasingly. Its purpose is to help Millennials and Gen Z see that you can know God personally as a close friend because Jesus wants you to understand the mysteries of His Kingdom. Religion has made Kingdom teachings about living in the afterlife. This book explains a countercultural King you can personally encounter, who operates a revolutionary society here on earth through us. It presents practical ways Christians can impact social change. Implementing Biblical Kingdom principles is how Christians apply the expertise of God to their lives.

Still, Dwyer sees hope for America. America has hope, if we act now, sharing America's incredible history and rich spiritual foundation with younger generations. "God, country, and tattoos: each of these three, through the tension each creates in the others, has shaped my life, forming the foundation upon which I stand," the author writes. You will be inspired and moved as you read of Dwyer's broken past, new birth in Christ, and his plea to America to return to God in, God, Country, and Tattoos: A Cry for Freedom. Book Tattoos Desire and Violence

Download or read book Tattoos Desire and Violence written by Karin Beeler and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether they graphically depict an individual's or a community's beliefs, express the defiance of authority, or brand marginalized groups, tattoos are a means of interpersonal communication that dates back thousands of years. Evidence of the tattoo's place in today's popular culture is all around--in advertisements, on the stereotypical outlaw character in films and television, in supermarket machines that dispense children's wash-away tattoos, and even in the production of a tattooed Barbie doll. This book explores the tattoo's role, primarily as an emblem of resistance and marginality, in recent literature, film, and television. The association of tattoos with victims of the Holocaust, slaves, and colonized peoples; with gangs, inmates, and other marginalized groups; and the connection of the tattoo narrative to desire and violence are discussed at length.

Book Making Christianity Manly Again

Download or read book Making Christianity Manly Again written by Jennifer McKinney and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bewildered by the 81 percent of white evangelicals voting for Donald Trump in the 2016 Presidential election, post-election commentators asked, "How could 'family values' conservatives vote for a man flouting every value they espoused?" or more colorfully, "How could so many conservative evangelicals have voted for a thrice-married casino mogul who has bragged about assaulting women and rarely goes to church?" These questions were valid, because evangelical support for political candidates had traditionally hinged on a candidate's moral behavior. In a 2011 Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) survey, for example, 30 percent of white evangelical Protestants agreed with the statement, "Because things have gotten so far off track in this country, we need a leader who is willing to break some rules if that's what it takes to set things right." By 2016, the percentage of white evangelical Protestants agreeing with that statement had more than doubled, increasing to 72 percent. In fact, breaking the rules seemed to galvanize Trump's appeal. The more raucous Trump and his campaign became, the more white evangelicals rallied to him, ultimately delivering him a victory"--
