Book Rana Cookbook

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rohini Rana
  • Publisher : Viking
  • Release : 2021-08
  • ISBN : 9780670093847
  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book Rana Cookbook written by Rohini Rana and published by Viking. This book was released on 2021-08 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rana name has been synonymous with the history and culture of Nepal for centuries. The beautiful palaces of Nepal were known not only for their glamour and architecture but also for their royal feasts. The recipes of the food served were exclusively with the cooks of the palaces and a lucky few who inherited them from earlier generations. In this exquisite book, for the first time ever, the doors to the palace kitchens are opened and we get a glimpse into the mouthwatering cuisine of the royals. Nepali food is famous for its fresh and light flavours in the staple rice, daals, meat and vegetables. The food of the Ranas, however, is vastly influenced by Indian flavours. While Indian food is renowned for its rich, thick gravies, Nepali cuisine tends to prefer lighter jhols and dry bhutans and kawafs. Though raw materials such as meat and vegetables can easily be found in the Indian kitchen, the style of preparation and spices such as jimbu and timur are unique in their Nepali flavour. With help and inputs from numerous family members, Rohini Rana has collected and documented the recipes precious to each Rana prime minister's family. Showcasing magnificent food from the palaces, this luxurious and beautifully illustrated cookbook attempts to preserve these recipes for future generations, and posterity.

Book The Sunuwar of Nepal and their Sense of Communication

Download or read book The Sunuwar of Nepal and their Sense of Communication written by Werner M. Egli and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2014 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This detailed study on the Sunuwar people, one of the many indigenous peoples of Nepal, is based on more than twenty years of ethnographic research. The book starts with an account of the Sunuwar's indigenous notion of culture (mukdum) as expressed in social practice. With reference to specific social fields, a model of the Sunuwar person, mainly used to grasp deviations from the ideal way of life, is analyzed from the perspective of cultural psychology and the anthropology of the senses. The study concludes with an analysis of healing rituals, showing that their effect simultaneously results from the ancestral atmosphere produced by the shaman and a kind of domination-free discussion among the ritual participants mainly taking place in the pauses of the ritual. Thus, the shamanic ritual is interpreted as a kind of mediation. Book Foods and Flavors from Nepal

Download or read book Foods and Flavors from Nepal written by Jyoti Pathak and published by Hippocrene Books. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birthplace of Buddha and home to stunning Himalayan peaks, Nepal is also known for its unique cuisine and rich cultural traditions. Nepal is a landlocked country that had little contact with the outside world for centuries, resulting in a unique culinary culture that was not influenced by other cuisines. After opening borders in the 1950s, however, Nepal's cuisine evolved to take on influences from neighboring India, China and Tibet. Those influences, combined with Nepal's vast cultural and geographic diversity, result in a singular cuisine characterized by the simplicity of fresh local ingredients that are artfully paired with herbs and spices. A Nepali staple is Daal-Bhaat-Tarkaari (lentil-rice-vegetable), found in many variations and flavors. It includes boiled rice accompanied by daal made from dried beans, lentils, or peas. A variety of fresh vegetables and leafy greens round out the meal. The use of spices is mild and subtle, but meals are often served with a side of spicy pickles. Meat, poultry, and fish are served only occasionally, mostly during celebrations. Author Jyoti Pathak's first cookbook Taste of Nepal won a Gourmand World Cookbook award for Best Foreign Cuisine Cookbook and showcased the foods and recipes of her native Nepal to a wider audience. This new cookbook brings the foods and flavors of Nepal alive with color photographs throughout, notes about important Nepali customs, festivals and holidays, and a collection of 185 recipes that spans traditional Nepali fare to popular fusion dishes, street foods and the modern Nepali table. Also included are helpful chapters on Nepali ingredients, utensils and cooking techniques and a glossary of Nepali-English words. Sample recipes: Kukhura ko Chowelaa (Chicken Chowelaa) Jwaano-Bhaat (Ajowan Rice) Maas ko Khichari (Split Urad Bean-Rice Khichari) Panchamukhi Daal (Mixed Five Daal) Tinkune-roti (Flaky Roti Bread) Sit le Khaeko Raayo so Saag (Spiced Mustard Greens) Pharsi ko Munta (Pumpkin Vine Shoots) Rukh-Katahar ko Tarkaari (Green Jackfruit Curry) Alu ko Achaar (Spicy Potato Salad with Sesame Seeds) m>Dahi Haaleko Khasi ko Maasu (Goat Curry with Yogurt) Ledo Maachaa (Fish in Aromatic Gravy) Kukhuraa ko Momo (Chicken Filling) Sikarni (Saffron-Pistachio Yogurt Dish)

Book Bleeding Mountains of Nepal

Download or read book Bleeding Mountains of Nepal written by Asitya Man Shrestha and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-04-03 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether it is politics, journalism or literature the most talked about topic today is undoubtedly corruption. This book deals with it throughout. Each page of Bleeding Mountains of Nepal is a ghastly tale of how the country is run by people whose unsaturated greed and avarice for power and perks and their dereliction of duty may be unmatched by anyone anywhere in the world. The book is a verification of how national resources, funds and revenue, foreign loans and assistance are pillaged, pilfered, plundered, abducted, swindled, embezzled, robbed, looted and predated by the very bottom to the top level in the government machinery and also by those outside the government. The whole book is a document of how the country is being fleeced, milked and wrenched at all times by the insiders, outsiders, donor agencies and the NGOs. It speaks of Nepal and its teeming millions squirming below the poverty line, forever exploited. It is a story of Nepals failed development of the last fifty yearsthe tears behind the smilethe smile that does not reach the eyes. It is particularly helpful to those who want to write, study and research on corruption and mismanagement in Nepal.

Download or read book The King of Nepal written by Joseph R. Pietri and published by Trine Day. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the halcyon days of easily accessible drugs to years of government intervention and a surging black market, this tale chronicles a former drug smuggler’s 50-year career in the drug trade, its evolution into a multibillion-dollar business, and the characters he met along the way. The journey begins with the infamous Hippie Hash trail that led from London and Amsterdam overland to Nepal where, prior to the early1970s, hashish was legal and smoked freely in Nepal, India, Afghanistan, and Laos; marijuana and opium were sold openly in Hindu temples in India and much of Asia; and cannabis was widely cultivated in Nepal and Afghanistan for use in food, medicine, and cloth. In documenting the stark contrasts of the ensuing years, the narrative examines the impact of the financial incentives awarded by international institutions such as the U.S. government to outlaw the cultivation of cannabis in Nepal and Afghanistan and to make hashish and opium illegal in Turkey—the demise of the U.S. “good old boy” dope network, the eruption of a violent criminal society, and the birth of a global black market for hard drugs—as well as the schemes smugglers employed to get around customs agents and various regulations.
