Book Tasmanian Freshwater Fishes

Download or read book Tasmanian Freshwater Fishes written by Wayne Fulton and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the native freshwater fish species are not well known to the general public whilst some of the introduced species are so familiar that they are occasionally mistakenly thought to be native to the state. The Tasmanian freshwater fish fauna consists of 25 species of native fish and a further 8 introduced species. At least 15 further species which are predominately marine or estuarine inhabitants, may be found some distance inland at certain times of the year. Some of these are more frequent invaders than others and the listing of species as freshwater is somewhat arbitrary. The lampreys are included in this and other fish guides by tradition, although they are not fishes in the strict sense.

Book Marine Invertebrate Fisheries

Download or read book Marine Invertebrate Fisheries written by John F. Caddy and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1989-01-17 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systems Analysis and Simulation in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences William E. Grant This hands-on approach provides guidance to the step-by-step applications of systems analysis and simulation to questions about ecological systems. At the same time, it explains general principles without requiring that readers have a strong background in mathematics, statistics, or computer science. Chapter 1 traces the development of systems ecology introducing basic concepts, while Chapters 2 through 5 present the four phases of systems analysis: conceptual model formulation, quantitative specification of the model, model validation, and model use. 1986 (0 471-89236-X) 338 pp. Bioeconomic Modelling and Fisheries Management Colin W. Clark Discusses the management of commercial marine fisheries and the relationship between the economic forces affecting the fishing industry and the biological factors that determine the production and supply of fish in the sea. Topics focus on methods of preventing overfishing and overcapitalization, economically effective and practical forms of regulation, management of developing fisheries, natural fluctuations of fish stocks, and complexities of marine ecosystems. 1985 (0 471-87394-2) 291 pp. Methods in Marine Zooplankton Ecology Makoto Omori and Tsutomu Ikeda Encompassing basic principles, procedures, and research problems, this book serves as a complete guide to current methods used in the study of marine zooplankton. The techniques are equally applicable to small organisms and to the larval stages of larger, commercially important organisms. Chapters start with a brief, but well-summarized introduction to zooplankton, followed by field sampling strategies and laboratory methods, and then conclude with estimates of productivity and analysis of community structure. Each method is described in detail, including a discussion of the problems inherent in using it. 1984 (0 471-80107-0) 322 pp.

Book Sea Urchins

Download or read book Sea Urchins written by John M. Lawrence and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully revised and expanded edition of Sea Urchins provides a wide-ranging understanding of the biology and ecology of this key component of the world's oceans. Coverage includes reproduction, metabolism, endocrinology, larval ecology, growth, digestion, carotenoids, disease and nutrition. Other chapters consider the ecology of individual species that are of major importance ecologically and economically, including species from Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Europe, North America, South America and Africa. In addition, six new contributions in areas such as immunology, digestive systems and community ecology inform readers on key recent developments and insights from the literature.Sea urchins are ecologically important and often greatly affect marine communities. Because they have an excellent fossil record, they are also of interest to paleontologists. Research on sea urchins has increased in recent years, stimulated first by recognition of their ecological importance and subsequently their economic importance. Scientists around the world are actively investigating their potential for aquaculture and fisheries, and their value as model systems for investigations in developmental biology continues to increase. - Continues the series "Developments in Aquaculture and Fisheries Science" with a newly revised volume - Collects and synthesizes the state of knowledge of sea urchin biology and ecology - Expanded from previous edition to include non-edible species, providing the needed basis for broader evolutionary understanding of sea urchins

Book Coral Reef Marine Plants of Hainan Island

Download or read book Coral Reef Marine Plants of Hainan Island written by Antoninovich Eduard Titlyanov and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coral Reef Marine Plants of Hainan Island summarizes the literature on the role and use of marine plants in coral reef ecosystems, especially in China and countries in the Asia-Pacific Region. The first chapter of the book focuses on the description of coral reef ecosystems, their architecture, and status of Hainan coral reefs. The second chapter focuses on common knowledge surrounding marine plants, such as their classification, identifying characteristics of different phyla, morphology, reproduction, life forms, main algal communities on coral reefs, distribution of algae on coral reefs and their roles, and the use of seaweeds in cookery, medicine, industry, and agriculture. The third chapter on the seaweed flora of Hainan Island contains species composition of the marine benthic flora, the complete list of marine plants found by researchers from all studies, and historical changes in the flora and seasonal changes. The final chapter shows how to identify common species of marine plants on coral reefs of Hainan Island. This excellent work will help readers identify relevant plants, also teaching them how to use plant resources to assess endangered states and create conservation strategies. - Presents the first publication devoted to the description of marine plants of Hainan Island - Describes marine plants, including the role of their communities in ecosystems of coral reef - Discusses seasonal and decadal changes in biodiversity and the composition of the marine flora of the island - Combines fundamental morphology with utilization and related products
