Book Gamelan Gong Kebyar

  • Author : Michael Tenzer
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2000-08

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Balinese gamelan, with its shimmering tones, breathless pace, and compelling musical language, has long captivated musicians, composers, artists, and travelers. Here, Michael Tenzer offers a comprehensive and durable study of this sophisticated musical tradition, focusing on the preeminent twentieth-century genre, gamelan gong kebyar. Combining the tools of the anthropologist, composer, music theorist, and performer, Tenzer moves fluidly between ethnography and technical discussions of musical composition and structure. In an approach as intricate as one might expect in studies of Western classical music, Tenzer's rigorous application of music theory and analysis to a non-Western orchestral genre is wholly original. Illustrated throughout, the book also includes nearly 100 pages of musical transcription (in Western notation) that correlate with 55 separate tracks compiled on two accompanying compact discs. The most ambitious work on gamelan since Colin McPhee's classic Music in Bali, this book will interest musicians of all kinds and anyone interested in the art and culture of Southeast Asia, Indonesia, and Bali.

  • Pages : 236 pages

Book excerpt: Falun Gong is a modern day spiritual/exercise movement which began in China in 1991 drawing on and combining ancient Chinese traditions. The Chinese Communist Party, alarmed at the growth of the movement and fearing for its own ideological supremacy banned the movement in 1999. Falun Gong practitioners were arrested in the hundreds of thousands and asked to recant. If they did not, they were tortured. If they still did not recant, they disappeared. Allegations surfaced in 2006 that the disappeared were being killed for their organs which were sold for large sums mostly to foreign transplant tourists. It is generally accepted that China kills prisoners for organs. The debate is over whether the prisoners who are killed are only criminals sentenced to death or Falun Gong practitioners as well. The authors produced a report concluding that the allegations were true. Bloody Harvest sets out the investigations and conclusions of the authors.

Book Doing Gong Culture

    Book Details:
  • Author : Hoai Tran
  • Publisher : LIT Verlag Münster
  • Release : 2022-12-28
  • ISBN : 3643914067
  • Pages : 218 pages

Download or read book Doing Gong Culture written by Hoai Tran and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how the efforts of various actors in 'doing Gong culture' contribute to preserving the intangible heritage of ethnic minorities in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. Tran's research challenges the conventional perspective that views heritagization as a process of cultural appropriation in which local heritage practitioners become cultural 'proprietors', who in UNESCO's view differ from 'culture carriers'. He shows that local artists actively engage with other actors in the 'heritage community', thus contributing to the performance of a 'living' image of the 'Space of Gong Culture' on the heritage stage. In this intangible cultural heritage, practically, all actors are 'culture carriers'. "Drawing on long-term fieldwork and placing the focus on human interaction, Hoai Tran paints a very subtle and sophisticated picture of the 'heritage community' and its actors in Vietnam's central highlands. By investigating who is acting in and on the space of gong culture, with what motivations, interests, intents or desires, how they are doing so and how effectively, this book arrives at new ways of thinking about 'heritagization' in Vietnam." Book excerpt: This book celebrates the pioneering work and contributions of Helen J. Neville, who conducted seminal neuroimaging work using electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaginf (fMRI) to illustrate the role that experience plays in shaping the brain. Bringing together her former students, collaborators, and colleagues, the book presents essays and original empirical research that pay tribute to Helen Neville’s groundbreaking work. The chapters discuss her contributions to our knowledge of neuroplasticity in perception, attention, and language, and how they inspired more recent developments in these and related areas, such as work on deafness (changes in sign language processing with age and the effects of cochlear implants on language development), the early stages of reading, memory consolidation during sleep, and the connection between attentional and memory systems. The book also discusses her strong commitment to rigorous science that could be translated into real-world practice through social interventions to improve neurodevelopmental outcomes. It additionally includes short poems by Marta Kutas interspersed between chapters that are inspired by Helen’s work and highlight her contributions, values, and ideas. The book showcases Helen Neville’s legacy to the field of neuroscience and is a must-read for all students and researchers of neuroplasticity and developmental cognitive neuroscience.
