  • Author : Isabel Moreira
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2010-10-07
  • ISBN : 0199780404

Download or read book Heaven s Purge written by Isabel Moreira and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine of purgatory - the state after death in which Christians undergo punishment by God for unforgiven sins - raises many questions. What is purgatory like? Who experiences it? Does purgatory purify souls, or punish them, or both? How painful is it? Heaven's Purge explores the first posing of these questions in Christianity's early history, from the first century to the eighth: an era in which the notion that sinful Christians might improve their lot after death was contentious, or even heretical. Isabel Moreira discusses a wide range of influences at play in purgatory's early formation, including ideas about punishment and correction in the Roman world, slavery, the value of medical purges at the shrines of saints, and the authority of visions of the afterlife for informing Christians of the hereafter. She also challenges the deeply ingrained supposition that belief in purgatory was a symptom of barbarized Christianity, and assesses the extent to which Irish and Germanic views of society, and the sources associated with them - penitentials and legal tariffs - played a role in purgatory's formation. Special attention is given to the writings of the last patristic author of antiquity, the Northumbrian monk Bede. Heaven's Purge is the first study to focus on purgatory's history in late antiquity, challenging the conclusions of recent scholarship through an examination of the texts, communities and cultural ideas that informed purgatory's early history.

  • Publisher : B&H Publishing Group

  • ISBN : 1462751199
  • Pages : 314 pages

Download or read book The Work of Christ written by John S. Hammett and published by B&H Publishing Group. This book was released on 2024-09-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Work of Christ, John S. Hammett and Charles L. Quarles examine Christ’s service for his people, especially his atoning work on the cross. The first half of The Work of Christ offers a biblical theology of the atoning work of Christ, from the Pentateuch to the Prophets to the writings of the New Testament. By meticulously examining these cornerstones in Scripture, the authors help readers grasp the full magnitude and significance of Christ's sacrifice for humanity. While the first half of The Work of Christ unearths the biblical roots of Christ's atoning sacrifice, the second half approaches the theology behind the work of Christ systematically, guiding readers to understand how the church has grappled with the atonement through the ages. This section details the work of Christ before the incarnation, in his earthly life and ministry, and on the cross. The authors examine the multifaceted nature of the cross, exploring not just the traditional penal substitutionary view (where Jesus takes our punishment), but also criticisms and alternative perspectives on atonement and its reach. The volume concludes by examining the work of Christ after the cross, from his resurrection to his work still to come in his return. Equipped with a deeper understanding of Christ's work, readers will be empowered to live a life that reflects the profound impact of the Savior's sacrifice. Recognizing that faithful theological study is an integrative task, the Theology for the People of God series uniquely combines biblical and systematic theology in dialogue with historical theology and with application to church and life. This series addresses classic doctrines of systematic theology and other relevant topics, pairing careful scholarship with the practical understanding that theology finds its focus within the context of the church. Together, the series' authors guide readers in developing a theologically informed way of seeing the world, a Christlike response to life, and Christian motivation for ministry.

Now at 72 years of age - after 45 years as a pastor, teacher and missionary - I can thank her for her prayers for they were fulfilled beyond her most hopeful dreams. I look back on 60 years of Biblical studies beginning when I first completed reading the King James Bible at the age of 12. I have been in love with the Scriptures – and reading/writing in general – and always wanted to publish a new edition of the New Testament.
