The study provides data on success probability and slant range at acquisition as a function of flight profile, camera lens focal length, and visibility. Acquisition factors investigated were: probability of acquiring a prebriefed target area, probability of acquiring a target, and slant range to target at the time of target area acquisition and target acquisition. Also measured was the time required to center the target image on the TV monitor screen following target acquisition. A total of 1,350 simulated flights were run with 15 pilots and engineers as observers. Statistical analyses and normative distributions of the performance measures obtained for different flight profiles, camera lens focal lengths, and visibility conditions are presented and discussed.
