In 1982, Gari Carter's old life abruptly ended. A headon car crash destroyed much of her face. Ahead were almost ten years of operations that gradually rebuilt her jaws, cheekbones, nose, and gums. Ahead lay months of helplessness, pain, anxiety, and depression. Ahead lay overwhelming fear of pain. But ahead lay much more. Healing Myself is the story of one woman's successful battle to rise above pain and despair. But it's about more than pain. It's about the elation she felt as she gained control of her suffering. It's about the lessons she learned from hard experiencelessons in patience, love, and proper priorities. Perhaps most astoundingly, it's about her discovery of a series of commerciallyproduced audio paincontrol tapes that changed her multiplehour operations from ordeals to be dreaded into challenges to be met calmly and confidentlywithout anesthetics!

This book was released on 2009 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Curanderas"--traditional healers in Mexican culture--bridge the gaps between multiple planes of existence--spiritual and material, modern and pre-modern--dispensing medicinal herbs, prayers, and instruction. Elizabeth de la Portilla writes of the world and practices of San Antonio curanderas. As a scholar, an ethnographer, and a curandera in training, her parallel perspectives uniquely aid readers in understanding this subordinated culture. Retelling the stories various healers have shared, interpreting their answers to her probing questions, and describing the herbs and recipes they use in their arts, the author vividly illuminates the borderland context of San Antonio. Scholars and readers of anthropology, sociology, Chicana and Chicano studies, and women's studies will savor the many layers of meaning and application in "They All Want Magic."

Download or read book Healing Dramas written by Raquel Romberg and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this intimate ethnography, Raquel Romberg seeks to illuminate the performative significance of healing rituals and magic works, their embodied nature, and their effectiveness in transforming the states of participants by focusing on the visible, albeit mostly obscure, ways in which healing and magic rituals proceed. The questions posed by Romberg emerge directly from the particular pragmatics of Puerto Rican brujería (witch-healing), shaped by the eclecticism of its rituals, the heterogeneous character of its participants, and the heterodoxy of its moral economy. What, if any, is the role of belief in magic and healing rituals? How do past discourses on possession enter into the performative experience of ritual in the here and now? Where does belief stop, and where do memories of the flesh begin? While these are questions that philosophers and anthropologists of religion ponder, they acquire a different meaning when asked from an ethnographic perspective. Written in an evocative, empathetic style, with theoretical ruminations about performance, the senses, and imagination woven into stories that highlight the drama and humanity of consultations, this book is an important contribution to the cross-cultural understanding of our capacity to experience the transcendental in corporeal ways.
