The incidences of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers are rising at an alarming rate. It is thought this is partly due to the increasing numbers of people using indoor tanning facilities. Ultraviolet radiation exposure from indoor tanning bed use is a major risk factor the development t of skin cancer. Public health campaigns have attempted to increase people's knowledge about skin cancer and UV exposure. This study attempts to explore what dermatology patients know about UV exposure and skin cancer. Thirty three dermatology patients participated in a multiple choice survey about various UV and skin cancer related knowledges. Results were analyzed based on certain themes that developed from the question scores. Overall, dermatology patients demonstrated certain knowledge deficiencies in what they know regarding UV exposure, indoor tanning, and skin cancer. The results from this study indicated a need for skin cancer awareness campaigns to include additional information about UV exposure and tanning beds. This study also demonstrated a need for routine physicals to include a history of ultraviolet radiation exposure. And finally, the results illustrate the importance for healthcare professionals to educate patients on how to do a self exam.

Considered a mark of the lower class for hundreds of years, tanning became a fad in the early 1920s and remains popular today. The tan, though, was much more than a matter of fashion,enjoying at first a boost from the medical establishment. Opinions ranging from hard science to quackery lauded the suntan as something of a panacea. Near the end of World War II, however, researchers increasingly warned against the hazards of overexposure to the sun, and a large new industry developed--sunscreen. Americans' current paradoxical obsession with the tan developed almost entirely from the conflicting rays of twentieth century thought. This history examines the twentieth century suntan as a social and scientific phenomenon. Beginning with the years 1900-1920, it debunks the myth that changing attitudes toward the tan sprang largely from the world of fashion. Initial pro-tanning medical hype, emerging negative opinions of sunbathing near the middle of the century, the development of sunscreens, the debate over sunscreen efficacy, and the sunless tan are all covered here. Book excerpt: A working group of 23 experts from 13 countries met in Lyon to evaluate the evidence for carcinogenicity of arsenic (mostly naturally occurring) as a contaminant of drinking-water, and of the water-disinfectant chloramine. The working group also evaluated or re-evaluated four chlorination by-products found in drinking-water, namely chloral hydrate, di- and trichloroacetic acids, and 3-chloro-4-(dichloromethyl)-5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone (also known as MX). High-level exposure to arsenic in drinking-water occurs in some regions such as China, Latin America, Bangladesh and West Bengal. The Working Group reviewed epidemiological studies of human cancer (mainly ecological studies in Taiwan and Chile, and several case-control and cohort studies) in relation to arsenic in drinking-water. Arsenic in drinking-water (primarily inorganic, as arsenate and to a lesser extent arsenite) was evaluated as carcinogenic to humans (Group 1) on the basis of sufficient evidence for an increased risk for cancer of the urinary bladder, lung and skin. Studies on inorganic arsenic in experimental animals provided limited evidence for its carcinogenicity, but sufficient evidence was found in experimental animals for the carcinogenicity of dimethylarsinic acid (an organic form of arsenic), which produced urinary bladder tumours in rats and lung tumours in mice after oral administration.
