Book Contact

Download or read book Contact written by Bob Tuxford and published by Grub Street Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A retired RAF Squadron Leader recounts his decades of service in Cold War combat zones across the globe, including his crucial role in the Falklands. Joining the Royal Air Force in 1970, Bob Tuxford distinguished himself as a fighter pilot, test pilot, squadron leader and flying instructor. In this enthralling memoir, he shares his story of active service across the world. Among other episodes, Tuxford details his exchange tour in the US Air Force and his courageous mission during the Falklands war that earned him an Air Force Cross for Gallantry. As a Victor tanker captain, Tuxford had the job of executing air-to-air refueling operations through the 1970s and early 1980s. This experience prepared him for the vital role he played in the first Black Buck mission during the Falklands campaign. Tuxford was the last Victor tanker to refuel the Vulcan piloted by Martin Withers before bombing commenced on that fateful night in 1982. Later in his career, Bob became the senior test pilot on the heavy aircraft test squadron at the Aircraft and Armament Experimental Establishment, Boscombe Down. In Contact!, Tuxford offers an intimate look at life in the RAF while shedding light on the importance of tanker squadrons during the Cold War.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one-year contract effort was performed in response to the USAF Air Training Command Request for Personnel Research No. 75-27, 'Tanker/Transport/Bomber (TTB) Lead-In Training.' The effort accomplished the following: (a) identification of training requirements for the TTB phase of a proposed dual-track UPT program. These requirements cover those tasks which are common to the B-52, KC-135, C-130, C-141, C-9, and C-5 aircraft, (b) development of ways of estimating the training benefits to be derived by MAC and SAC from pilot lead-in training on these common tasks, (c) development of a method for determining the generalizability of any subset of TTB lead-in training tasks to the entire domain of TTB training tasks, and (d) development of an approach to the measurement of aircrew performance in the TTB training environment. This study effort was prerequisite to the Air Training Command development of a syllabus for the TTB track of a Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training System (SUPTS). (Author).

Book excerpt: Known as the ¿Thud¿, Republic¿s F-105 Thunderchief entered service in 1958, and flew in a variety of roles through 1984. The largest single-engine fighter in the U.S.A.F. inventory, the F-105 could exceed Mach 1.0 at sea level, and achieve Mach 2.0 at high altitude. It could carry up to 14,000 pounds of ordnance, or about as much as most WWII heavy bombers. The F-105 served as the primary strike aircraft in the early years of the Vietnam conflict, and its pilots flew over 20,000 missions. These included ¿wild weasel¿ flights intended to suppress North Vietnamese air defenses. The dangerous aspects of these missions help account for the aircraft¿s high loss rate ¿ out of 833 F-105s produced, 320 were lost in combat in S.E. Asia. Originally printed by the U.S. Air Force, this handbook provides a fascinating glimpse inside the cockpit of one of history¿s great planes.
