Book Taming the Sabertooth

Download or read book Taming the Sabertooth written by Tracey Grove and published by . This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Build Resilience To Thrive In Work And Life Stress is increasingly becoming an issue for leaders in the workplace. Highly competitive marketplaces, longer working hours, and higher performance expectations are all contributing to a more stressful work environment. And the news at home isn't much better. Digitization and "always on" technology have blurred the boundaries between work and personal life, removing the natural buffer between them and costing us our health. At a time when there is significant anxiety both at home and in the workplace, it is critical for us to understand how our bodies react to stress, why stress is a necessary element of our lives, and how we can better cope with it to become better leaders. In Taming the Sabertooth: Resilient Leadership in a Stressful World, we are reminded that while we cannot necessarily change our environment, we do have the power to shift our response to that environment by building resilience. With insights that are intensely practical and unapologetically straightforward, we learn that hiding behind a rock is not an option; to thrive in work and life, you have to tame the sabertooth. "Leading teams is now more important than ever. Tracey Grove has written a stimulating and insightful book with straightforward, actionable ways to become a resilient leader in today's fast-paced world." GEN STANLEY MCCRYSTAL, Retired Four-Star General, Former Commander of JSOC and ISAF, and Author, Team of Teams "Taming the Sabertooth will lead to lasting changes in both your professional and personal life. A powerful guide to leading with courage, humility, and resilience." BRIAN TRACY Author, How the Best Leaders Lead "Disarmingly written with simple effortlessness, Tracey Grove renders complex ideas and concepts easily understandable and practical." MARSHALL GOLDSMITH New York Times Bestselling Author, Triggers, Mojo, and What Got You Here Won't Get You There "Tracey Grove's Taming the Sabertooth is a shining example of how far we have come in understanding well-being and collaboration at work. Tracey is a natural storyteller who is gifted with the ability to show us alternative ways of coping, communicating, and caring while committing to a better workplace environment. She shares critical knowledge about the neuroscience of threat, the psychology of performance, and the growing research on resilience in simple and digestible ways. Her guidance easily leads to personal action. I highly recommend this as a primer for workplace survival and a guide to cultivating your best self." Book The Demotivated Employee

Download or read book The Demotivated Employee written by Cathy Bush and published by Advantage Media Group. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DO YOUR EMPLOYEES SEEM DISENGAGED? Do you ever wonder why employees are not as motivated and productive as you would like for them to be? Do you find yourself thinking that some employees are just "lazy slackers"? You may be surprised to learn that there are other explanations for employee demotivation that you may not be thinking about when you are leading people. Authors Tara Peters and Cathy Bush have worked with thousands of leaders who are shocked to learn that managers and leaders play a significant role in causing employees to lose motivation. Without even realizing it, we take all sorts of actions during the process of leading people and organizations, and many of these actions actually deflate the motivation that people bring with them to work. In The Demotivated Employee, readers will learn what leadership behaviors they are engaging in that might demotivate their employees; how to better communicate with employees so this doesn't happen; and how to work within the constraints of organizational culture to help employees thrive.

Book Cadillac Desert

Download or read book Cadillac Desert written by Marc Reisner and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1993-06-01 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I’ve been thinking a lot about Cadillac Desert in the past few weeks, as the rain fell and fell and kept falling over California, much of which, despite the pouring heavens, seems likely to remain in the grip of a severe drought. Reisner anticipated this moment. He worried that the West’s success with irrigation could be a mirage — that it took water for granted and didn’t appreciate the precariousness of our capacity to control it.” – Farhad Manjoo, The New York Times, January 20,2023 "The definitive work on the West's water crisis." --Newsweek The story of the American West is the story of a relentless quest for a precious resource: water. It is a tale of rivers diverted and dammed, of political corruption and intrigue, of billion-dollar battles over water rights, of ecological and economic disaster. In his landmark book, Cadillac Desert, Marc Reisner writes of the earliest settlers, lured by the promise of paradise, and of the ruthless tactics employed by Los Angeles politicians and business interests to ensure the city's growth. He documents the bitter rivalry between two government giants, the Bureau of Reclamation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in the competition to transform the West. Based on more than a decade of research, Cadillac Desert is a stunning expose and a dramatic, intriguing history of the creation of an Eden--an Eden that may only be a mirage. This edition includes a new postscript by Lawrie Mott, a former staff scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council, that updates Western water issues over the last two decades, including the long-term impact of climate change and how the region can prepare for the future.

Book Life Without Oil

Download or read book Life Without Oil written by Steve Hallett and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2011-03-14 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the end of the 21st century, our oil and natural gas supplies will be virtually nonexistent, and limited coal supplies will be restricted to only a handful of countries. The authors - an environmental scientist and veteran journalist - make abundantly clear that we must plan for a future without reliance on oil. They make a compelling case that the key determinant of our global economy is not so much the invisible hand of the marketplace but the inexorable laws of ecology. Although the coming decades will be a time of much disruption and change of lifestyle, in the end we may learn a wiser, more sustainable stewardship of our natural resources. This timely, sobering, yet constructive discussion of energy and ecology offers a realistic vision of the near future and many important lessons about the limits of our resources.

Book excerpt: Ella Mortimer is a bright nine-year-old girl who happens to have leukemia. Diagnosed at the age of six, the long hospital visits, chemotherapy, blood transfusions, bouts of nausea, and lack of energy are taking a toll on Ella, who is a realist by nature. To cheer her up, her mom, Rebecca, takes Ella and her siblings, Chelsea and Miles, on a vacation to "Dreamcatchers," an aged amusement park that has seen better days. Once there, Ella meets an intriguing boy named Sebastian, who lives in the amusement park. With the help of this strange boy and his many wonderful adventures, Ella soon learns that there is more to life than just the facts and dreaming is every bit as important as the reality of her illness. Ella & Sebastian is based, in part, on the experience of Lydia, a girl who was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of six. Like Ella, Lydia relapsed before her first round of treatments was completed and at times certainly needed a distraction from this disease. We are delighted to announce that after five years of treatments, Lydia has been in remission for over three years and is now focusing on being a teenager. At Lydia's request, a portion of the proceeds of this book will go to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to continue their efforts to find a cure for leukemia and other blood diseases, as well as the Children's Miracle Network, whose local organization was essential in helping Lydia to fulfill her dreams while she was being treated, because every child deserves to dream.

Book excerpt: 64 Shots: Leadership in a Crazy World is a compendium of value-accelerators for business and life. It is gathered as a 64 shot method from the astute observations and remarkable life of creative business leader and iconoclast Kevin Roberts. A provocative figure traversing the peaks of global commerce, media and sport, Kevin Roberts - creator of the groundbreaking idea Lovemarks - is recognized as one of today's most uncompromisingly-positive and inspirational leaders. In 64 Shots, Roberts draws on the biggest ideas, toughest experiences and greatest influences of his life to present 16X4 stripped down, straight-forward and instantly-absorbable insights on how to bring order to the chaos of business and life. The punchy insights into winning - hitting readers lightly jab after jab - are an array of one-liners, sound bites, tweets, charts, quotes and historical reference points. They are loaded with Roberts' experience, story, brio, provocation and direction. The language is extreme, brimming with the irrepressible attitude and provocation that fueled Roberts' meteoric career. While there is a sequence, the 64 shots are stand-alone signposts towards living an enterprising and winning life. Anyone can dip into the book anywhere and find value. The writing is accompanied by (not necessarily linked to) a visual order of black-and-white photos of leaders in their cultural fields, some modern, many historical, some famous, and all personal. This eclectic selection of people are both direct and indirect influences to Kevin Roberts' life. They all have an interesting - and some mysterious - connection to concepts of leadership in a crazy world. Examples are: Mary Quant, Vince Lombardi, Margaret Thatcher, Vivienne Westwood, Twiggy, Tom Peters, Peter Drucker, Martin Luther King, Renzo Rosso, Brigit Bardot, Bob Dylan, Sean Fitzpatrick (a rugby player). The book is high touch and glossy. It feels like Apple, not Shakespeare. 64 Shots - will you take them?

Book excerpt: Are you a furry? A Fox Tail is unapologetically furry, and if you're ready to meet Vulpie, the legendary hacker, prankster, and all around brilliant orange furred fox, you're ready to enjoy a book that will solidify the anthropomorphic landscape forever. Polar, a handsome arctic wolf, crosses paths with Vulpie just as the fox boy is about to unleash his life's greatest work, the computer Virus/AI, Vulpie.net.In a world of carnivores and herbivores, carnivores have the upper paws and everyone knows foxes control the media. Wolves are figureheads and make much of the success, but there has always been a sly fox somewhere in the fate of all great things. Polar and Vulpie display that, and all Polar wants is to keep Vulpie as his lover but taming the fox boy proves difficult. The hacker wreaks havoc throughout the universe by use of his artificial intelligence, and is able to control robotic soldiers, personal computers, bank accounts, and even the world government mainframe. Even though Polar succeeds in winning over Vulpie from his criminal ways, Vulpie.net itself develops a particularly disturbing personality. Somehow, it concludes that it is the hacker named "Evil Vulpie," yet the artificial intelligence also is aware that it did not write itself, and is merely imitating its creator. This contradiction does not please Vulpie.net. In fact, it makes Vulpie.net quite upset and it takes actions to reverse some of its parameters regarding which Vulpie is the real one.
