Download or read book Expanding the Lexicon written by Sabine Arndt-Lappe and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of new lexical units and patterns has been studied in different research frameworks, focusing on either system-internal or system-external aspects, from which no comprehensive view has emerged. The volume aims to fill this gap by studying dynamic processes in the lexicon – understood in a wide sense as not being necessarily limited to the word level – by bringing together approaches directed to morphological productivity as well as approaches analyzing general types of lexical innovation and the role of discourse-related factors. The papers deal with ongoing changes as well as with historical processes of change in different languages and reflect on patterns and specific subtypes of lexical innovation as well as on their external conditions and the speakers’ motivations for innovating. Moreover, the diffusion and conventionalization of innovations will be addressed. In this way, the volume contributes to understanding the complex interplay of structural, cognitive and functional factors in the lexicon as a highly dynamic domain.

Download or read book Recent Advances in Computational Terminology written by Didier Bourigault and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-06-15 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This first collection of selected articles from researchers in automatic analysis, storage, and use of terminology, and specialists in applied linguistics, computational linguistics, information retrieval, and artificial intelligence offers new insights on computational terminology. The recent needs for intelligent information access, automatic query translation, cross-lingual information retrieval, knowledge management, and document handling have led practitioners and engineers to focus on automated term handling. This book offers new perspectives on their expectations. It will be of interest to terminologists, translators, language or knowledge engineers, librarians and all others dependent on the automation of terminology processing in professional practices. The articles cover themes such as automatic thesaurus construction, automatic term acquisition, automatic term translation, automatic indexing and abstracting, and computer-aided knowledge acquisition. The high academic standing of the contributors together with their experience in terminology management results in a set of contributions that tackle original and unique scientific issues in correlation with genuine applications of terminology processing.
Download or read book Comparative Evaluation of Focused Retrieval written by Shlomo Geva and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-workshop proceedings of the 9th International Workshop of the Initiative for the Evaluation of XML Retrieval, INEX 2009, held in Vught, The Netherlands, in December 2009. The aim of the INEX 2010 workshop was to bring together researchers in the field of XML IR who participated in the INEX 2010 campaign. During the past year, participating organizations contributed to the building of large-scale XML test collections by creating topics, performing retrieval runs and providing relevance assessments. The workshop concluded the results of this large-scale effort, summarized and addressed issues encountered, and devised a work plan for the future evaluation of XML retrieval systems. The 37 full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 42 submissions; they are organized into sections corresponding to the nine tracks of the workshop, investigating various aspects of XML retrieval, from book search to entity.

Download or read book Cognitive Approach to Natural Language Processing written by Bernadette Sharp and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As natural language processing spans many different disciplines, it is sometimes difficult to understand the contributions and the challenges that each of them presents. This book explores the special relationship between natural language processing and cognitive science, and the contribution of computer science to these two fields. It is based on the recent research papers submitted at the international workshops of Natural Language and Cognitive Science (NLPCS) which was launched in 2004 in an effort to bring together natural language researchers, computer scientists, and cognitive and linguistic scientists to collaborate together and advance research in natural language processing. The chapters cover areas related to language understanding, language generation, word association, word sense disambiguation, word predictability, text production and authorship attribution. This book will be relevant to students and researchers interested in the interdisciplinary nature of language processing. - Discusses the problems and issues that researchers face, providing an opportunity for developers of NLP systems to learn from cognitive scientists, cognitive linguistics and neurolinguistics - Provides a valuable opportunity to link the study of natural language processing to the understanding of the cognitive processes of the brain
Download or read book Spoken Language Understanding written by Gokhan Tur and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-05-03 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spoken language understanding (SLU) is an emerging field in between speech and language processing, investigating human/ machine and human/ human communication by leveraging technologies from signal processing, pattern recognition, machine learning and artificial intelligence. SLU systems are designed to extract the meaning from speech utterances and its applications are vast, from voice search in mobile devices to meeting summarization, attracting interest from both commercial and academic sectors. Both human/machine and human/human communications can benefit from the application of SLU, using differing tasks and approaches to better understand and utilize such communications. This book covers the state-of-the-art approaches for the most popular SLU tasks with chapters written by well-known researchers in the respective fields. Key features include: Presents a fully integrated view of the two distinct disciplines of speech processing and language processing for SLU tasks. Defines what is possible today for SLU as an enabling technology for enterprise (e.g., customer care centers or company meetings), and consumer (e.g., entertainment, mobile, car, robot, or smart environments) applications and outlines the key research areas. Provides a unique source of distilled information on methods for computer modeling of semantic information in human/machine and human/human conversations. This book can be successfully used for graduate courses in electronics engineering, computer science or computational linguistics. Moreover, technologists interested in processing spoken communications will find it a useful source of collated information of the topic drawn from the two distinct disciplines of speech processing and language processing under the new area of SLU.

Download or read book Who Is This Allah written by G.J.O. Moshay and published by Chick Publications. This book was released on 2008 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is Allah the God of the Bible? In any of the one hundred and fifty sects and sub-sects of Islam, the common denominator is Allah. Who is this Allah? Much has been written on the religion of Islam and its prophet; but not much is said about the god of the religion. One reason is the assumption that the god of Islam and the God of Christianity are one and the same. When, on September 11, 2001, some Muslims carried out a well-organized attack, destroying the The World Trade Center and damaging the Pentagon, a letter of last instruction from the leaders of the terrorist network was discovered. Written in Arabic, it says their mission was a service to God. Actually this was a mistranslation. The word the terrorists used is not the Arabic word for God but Allah. The Arabic word for God is Ilah. So they believed they were working for Allah, not God. Who is this Allah? Were these terrorists extremists, or were they serving the Allah of the Qur'an? The war against terrorism goes beyond overthrowing the Taliban regime in Afghanistan or even killing Osama bin Laden. The war on terror may not be won unless we understand the Allah the terrorists say inspires them. Not all Muslims are terrorists. But the terrorists' letter, which is quoted fully in chapter three, gives great insight into the Islamic religion and the motivation for religious terrorism in the world. Why have we shied away from probing the identity of the Allah of Islam? Possibly it is because if Allah is not the God of the Bible, it would force us to face many ugly facts. For example, if Allah is the true God, and the Qur'an, Islam's sacred book, is true, then Christians can be sure they are lost, no matter how zealous they may be. The reverse would also be true. It is necessary, therefore, to provide sufficient information to enable you to determine your own verdict, and answer the question: Who is this Allah? This book will do that.
