There is more than just murder. There is redemption, love, dreams that come true, unlikely accomplishments, happiness, sorrow, and loves that seem impossible, loyalty and yet, will justice ever come to the person or persons unknown who did this murder more than most foul? The mid thirties was a difficult time for most Americans, especially for those who were physical or social misfits. The circus was a perfect haven for such people. Download or read book Dilemmas written by Michael Jackson and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2024-12-10 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ingenious ways dilemmas are addressed in non-Western traditions Dilemmas explores some of the most pressing existential problems of our times, from climate change, political conflict, and social injustice, to balancing one’s own needs against those of others. Pushing back against the tendency to think of dilemmas as clear-cut binary choices, renowned anthropologist Michael Jackson shows us some of the ingenious ways that dilemmas are addressed in non-Western thought and oral traditions, as well as in Western philosophy. Drawing on examples from myth, literature, and his extensive ethnographic fieldwork in West Africa and Aboriginal Australia, each of thirteen chapters examines a particular dilemma and how it is experienced, circumvented, or reimagined. From the struggles of the Aboriginal people of Central Australia for land rights to Walter Benjamin’s harrowing journey across the Pyrenees as he fled German-occupied France in 1940; from the story of a suburban family in Aotearoa New Zealand adjusting to life in a commune to the dilemmas of migrants from the Global South trying to reconcile their search for a better life with their longing for home—Jackson interweaves philosophical reflections, insights from his anthropological fieldwork, and individual life stories. In striking a balance between our contradictory impulses to be both apart from and together with others, Jackson makes a case against identitarian essentialism, showing us how the oppositional thinking through which we often frame our contemporary dilemmas may be overcome.

Book excerpt: DOG TALK chronicles Harrison Forbes's life with dogs, from the first bond he formed as a boy with a Belgian Tervuren named Sabina, to the story of Lex, a police dog who attacked his owner's wife, and was redeemed by Harrison's intense love and respect for the breed. Forbes also offers practical aspects of understanding and dealing with whatever type of dog the reader may have. In DOG TALK, the pet owner will find fascinating insights into behavioral problems, as each chapter addresses a different situation or issue. Here are some of Harrison's trademark insights into dog behavior and training: *Energy management is the basis of behavior management : unwanted or aggressive behavior, is often the result of pent-up, frustrated energy *Dog behavior should always be taken in context; a dog that is housetrained in its home isn't necessarily so everywhere else *Every dog's make-up is individual and distinct--:a combination of nature and nurture *Non-verbal communication, structure and clearly delineated limits, and the human-canine bond are basic building blocks in a good relationship *Reasonable expectations are key to an enjoyable pet experience DOG TALK is at times funny, irreverent, insightful, and touching, and it will deepen the reader's understanding of dog behavior and as a result will enable him to approach his own dog in a fresh and motivated way to begin, improve, mend, or strengthen a relationship that can last a lifetime.

When we first meet Sable Gaines she is attending an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, where she admits to being there solely for the benefit of her mother-an overbearing elitist-and her best friend, Mikeen. She vehemently denies having a problem - at least not a drinking problem. While at the meeting, Sable confesses to having frequent encounters with her father, who just happens to have been dead for nearly a month. Sable offers this information up freely-simply trying to make sense of the world through what is tangible and what is not. But she quickly begins to wonder what the others at the meeting must think of her while deciding what she thinks of herself. Through "Separation" we come to meet a preacher who tells Sable that she is one of the rare individuals able to see into the spirit world-in fact, according to her Uncle, Tico Gaines, it is a family trait that her grandmother possessed as well. However, even more amazingly, Sable finds she can communicate with inanimate objects. As a result of her father's death, Sable and her Uncle Tico find themselves investigating the murder along with the local police department. Will Sable's unique powers serve to aid in the investigation, or will they reveal too much and leave Sable a wreck, simply looking for her next drink?
