Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talking Gloves for the Deaf and Blind: Their Value to Men Injured in the Present War The present war has proven tremendously destructive to the faculties of sight and hearing, and the number of men who will be deaf or deaf-and-blind as a result is certain to be large. The problem of keeping these men in touch with the world about them despite the loss of their faculties is not an easy one, but the consequences of so doing are so important that no efforts should be spared to aid them. The purpose of this article is to describe very briefly one means the use of a touch alphabet with a so-called talking glove which has proven of the utmost value in the cases of various deaf and deaf-and-blind persons. Although this method of communication has, as will be hereinafter shown, been used in occasional instances during the course of several centuries, yet so little effort has been made to gather together the information in regard thereto, in the form of a permanent record, that the use of a talking glove is quite unknown to many persons who have had wide experience in the teaching of the deaf and of the blind, and one may consult such a standard work as the Encyclopaedia Britannica (see article on Deaf-Blind, Vol. VII, Page893) without finding any description of such a method of communication. As a result of the prevailing ignorance as to this method there have been within the past sixty years at least two well established instances, hereinafter mentioned, in which touch alphabets were invented by deaf and blind men who had no knowledge that anyone had ever devised anything similar. Book Assistive Technology for the Hearing impaired Deaf and Deafblind

Download or read book Assistive Technology for the Hearing impaired Deaf and Deafblind written by Marion A. Hersh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-07-24 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affirmative legislative action in many countries now requires that public spaces and services be made accessible to disabled people. Although this is often interpreted as access for people with mobility impairments, such legislation also covers those who are hearing or vision impaired. In these cases, it is often the provision of advanced technological devices and aids which enables people with sensory impairments to enjoy the theatre, cinema or a public meeting to the full. Assistive Technology for the Hearin-impaired, Deaf and Deafblind shows the student of rehabilitation technology how this growing technical provision can be used to support those with varying reductions in auditory ability and the deafblind in modern society. Features: instruction in the physiology of the ear together with methods of measurement of hearing levels and loss; the principles of electrical engineering used in assistive technology for the hearing impaired; description and demonstration of electrical engineering used in hearing aids and other communications enhancement technologies; explanation of many devices designed for every-day living in terms of generic electrical engineering; sections of practical projects and investigations which will give the reader ideas for student work and for self teaching. The contributors are internationally recognised experts from the fields of audiology, electrical engineering, signal processing, telephony and assistive technology. Their combined expertise makes Assistive Technology for the Hearing-impaired, Deaf and Deafblind an excellent text for advanced students in assistive and rehabilitation technology and to professional engineers and medics working in assistive technology who wish to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of current engineering advances.

Download or read book Gloves written by Anne Green and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2021-11-06 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating history of gloves both real and mythical, practical and high fashion. This beautifully illustrated history of gloves draws on examples from across the world to explore their cultural significance. From hand-knitted mittens to exquisitely embroidered confections, and from the three-fingered gloves of medieval shepherds to Bluetooth-enabled examples that function like a mobile phone, gloves’ extraordinary variety is a tribute to human ingenuity. So, too, is the remarkable diversity of their—often contradictory—cultural associations. They have been linked to honor, identity, and status, but also to decadence and deceit. In this book, Anne Green discusses gloves both as material objects with their own fascinating history and as fictional creations in folktales, literature, films, etiquette manuals, paintings, and advertisements. Looking to the runway, Green even explores their recent resurgence as objects of high fashion.
