Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales Out of Court It was almost two years after this casual meet ing that I called at Butterfield's otfice on the Northern Terminal business. Except that he was a trifle bigger in body and coarser in feature he had not changed much in the interval, and I would have known him anywhere. But the expression on his face as he glanced up from my card convinced me that I was about to deal with a very different person from the man who played to his wife's piping at the social board. He knew every man in the place and just what had brought him there; he could name every juror who had sat on any case of importance during the past thirty years, and give the inside history of his verdict; he was generally familiar with the claims of the litigants long before they reached the court-room; and there were not many lawyers who could tell him anything he did not already know concerning the private afiairs of their clients. Book Morality Tales

Download or read book Morality Tales written by Leslie Peirce and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2003-06-16 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this skillful analysis, Leslie Peirce delves into the life of a sixteenth-century Middle Eastern community, bringing to light the ways that women and men used their local law court to solve personal, family, and community problems. Examining one year's proceedings of the court of Aintab, an Anatolian city that had recently been conquered by the Ottoman sultanate, Peirce argues that local residents responded to new opportunities and new constraints by negotiating flexible legal practices. Their actions and the different compromises they reached in court influenced how society viewed gender and also created a dialogue with the ruling regime over mutual rights and obligations. Locating its discussion of gender and legal issues in the context of the changing administrative practices and shifting power relations of the period, Morality Tales argues that it was only in local interpretation that legal rules acquired vitality and meaning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sedgely Court, Vol. 1 of 3: A Tale But about fifty years ago, the time at which my story begins, the old mansion-house was still a tolerably comfortable place of residence, and, with its pretty surrounding fields, was the property of Captain Beaton, a retired military officer, in whose family it had been for many more generations than could be reckoned up by anybody now alive. It was but a meagre inheritance, the very best year's rental of which rarely exceeded 500 and its possessors, scarcely able to rank as county gentle-folks, had always been content to be long to the town rather than the county. The present laird, perhaps, had he been so inclined, might have held up his head a little higher than most of his, predecessors; but besides that, like them, he was rather unambitious, there were circumstances in his domestic lot which seemed to forbid the hope that the family should for some time at least take a higher position in the social scale. Book Tales of magic tales in print

Download or read book Tales of magic tales in print written by Willem De Blecourt and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the nineteenth century folklorists, and the general public in their wake, have assumed the orality of fairy tales. Only lately have more and more specialists been arguing in favour of at least an interdependence between oral and printed distribution of stories. This book takes an extreme position in that debate: as far as Tales of magic is concerned, the initial transmission proceded exclusively through prints. From a historical perspective, this is the only viable approach; the opposite assumption of a vast unrecorded and thus inaccessible reservoir of oral stories, presents a horror vacui. Only in the course of the nineteenth century, when folklorists started collecting in the field and asked their informants for fairy tales, was this particular genre incorporated into a then feeble oral tradition. Even then story tellers regularly reverted to printed texts. Every recorded fairy tale can be shown to be dependent on previous publications, or to be a new composition, constructed on the basis of fragments of stories already in existence. Tales of magic, tales in print traces the textual history of a number of fairy tale clusters, linking the findings of literary historians on the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries to the material collected by nineteenth- and twentieth-century field workers. While it places fairy tales as a genre firmly in a European context, it also follows particular stories in their dispersion over the rest of the world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court This tale are historical, and the episodes which are used to illustrate them are also historical. It is not pretended that these laws and customs existed in England in the sixth century; no, it is only pretended that inasmuch as they existed in the English and other civilizations of far later times, it is safe to consider that it is no libel upon the sixth century to suppose them to have been in practice in that day also. One is quite justified in inferring that what ever one Of these laws or customs was lacking in that remote time, its place was competently filled by a worse one.
