Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the Trail: Short Stories of Western Life These Tales of the Trail are based upon actual facts which came under the personal ob servation of the author, whose reputation as a writer of the frontier is national. His other works have met with phenomenal success, and these Sketches, which have appeared from time to time in the current literature of the United States, are now compiled, and will form another interesting series of stories of that era of great adventures, when the country west of the Mis souri was unknown except to the trappers, hunters, and army officers. Some of the characters around which are woven the thrilling incidents of these Tales were men of world-wide reputation; they have long since joined the choir invisible, but their names as pioneers in the genesis of great States which then formed the theater of their exploits will live as long as the United States exists as a great nation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Redskin and Cow-Boy: A Tale of the Western Plains My Dear Lads, There are but few words of preface needed to a story that is not historical. The principal part of the tale is laid among the cow-boys of the Western States of America, a body of men unrivalled in point of hardihood and devotion to work, as well as in reckless courage and wild daring. Texas, which twenty-five years ago was the great ranching state, is no longer the home of the typical cow-boy, but he still exists and flourishes in New Mexico and the northern States and Territories. The picture I have given of their life can be relied upon, and its adventures and dangers are in no degree coloured, as I have taken them from the lips of a near relative of my own who was for some years working as a cow-boy in New Mexico. He was an actor in many of the scenes described, and so far from my having heightened or embellished them, I may say that I have given but a small proportion of the perilous adventures through which he went, for had I given them in full it would, I am sure, have seemed to you that the story was too improbable to be true. In treating of cow-boy life, indeed, it may well be said that truth is stranger than fiction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Those with whom the author shot these wild moors, or fished the waters, will best estimate the fidelity of the descriptions; and one valued friend, though now beneath another sun, will probably recall the days he spent by fell and flood, and bring to memory those light and joyous nights when he caroused in a mountain bivouac, and rested in a moor land hut. Download or read book The Wild Man of the West written by R. M. Ballantyne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wild Man of the West: A Tale of the Rocky Mountains is a novel written by Robert Michael Ballantyne. Ballantyne, a Scotsman, was a prolific writer of juvenile fiction during the nineteenth century. He authored more than one hundred books. The Wild Man of the West is the story of March Marson, an experienced teenaged backwoodsman, and his friend Bob Bounce. The two teenagers plan an adventure and escape to the West, where they explore the Rocky Mountains on foot, using their wits and survival skills as needed. The boys encounter terrific wildlife as well as the local indigenous peoples. They also come face to face with the title character, a "Wild Man" of local lore. What they learn about this "Wild Man" surprises them. Ballantyne was a writer of fiction aimed at teenagers, and this work is no different. It is a great adventure story that will appeal to young minds, and has two teenagers as its central characters. It is a coming of age story, with Ballantyne sprinkling in doses of wisdom alongside the action. The story moves quickly, and while character development isn't neglected, this is a book that is forwarded more by action than by dialogue. The Wild Man of the West: A Tale of the Rocky Mountains is typical of Ballantyne's work. It is a well-paced adventure that will primarily appeal to teenaged readers. Individuals looking for a classic tale of Western exploration would be wise to consider this novel. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wessex Tales, Vol. 1 of 2: Strange, Lively, and Commonplace Among the few features of agricultural England which retain an appearance but little modified by the lapse of centuries, may be reckoned the high, grassy, and furzy downs, coombs, or ewe-leases, as they are indifferently called, that fill a large area of certain counties in the south and south-west. If any mark of human occupation is met with hereon, it usually takes the form of the solitary cottage of some shepherd. Fifty years ago such a lonely cottage stood on such a down, and may possibly be standing there now. In spite of its loneliness, however, the spot, by actual measurement, was not more than five miles from a county-town. Yet that affected it little. Download or read book Popular Tales and Fictions Vol 1 of 2 written by United States and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Tales and Fictions, Vol. 1 of 2: Their Migrations and Transformations The question Of their origin and diffusion has for more than half a century specially engaged the ener gies of distinguished European scholars, but there still exists very considerable diversity Of opinion on the subject. In Germany, such eminent screams as Ben fey, godeke, kohler, N Oldeke, and Liebrecht maintain that our popular tales, which are current from Norway to Spain, from Italy to the West Highlands of Scot land, are simply secondary forms of Oriental originals, which were imported from Asia in different ways: for the south of Europe this was done through the Turks; for the north, by the Mongolians during their two hun dred years of supremacy. In England, it is contended by Basent, baring-gould, Cox, and other scholars, that they are survivals of primitive myths and legends, the common heritage of the whole Aryan race, and came to Europe with the tribes when they migrated westwards and northwards, at some very remote period - just as the languages of Europe are Aryan.
