Book Tales of Old Cullman County Alabama

Download or read book Tales of Old Cullman County Alabama written by Robin Sterling and published by . This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When people think of Cullman County and its history, often the first things that come to mind are its German ancestry, Ave Maria Grotto, strawberries, Jim Folsom and Guy Hunt. But there's lots more. Organized in 1877, the county is the second youngest county in the state. Despite its relative recent creation, Cullman has a rich and often tumultuous past. Few remember the old stage road, ghost towns, and struggles along the railroad line. Then there's the little known Cleveland County, the Bug Tussle Mail Fraud Caper, a vanished railroad line, and the man who foretold of a railroad wreck at Holmes Gap. These, and other little known, secret, and hidden topics make up the history of Cullman. This book is not a definitive or comprehensive history of Cullman, but attempts to fill in a few of the gaps and illuminate topics skimmed over or skipped in other books. Those who think they know the history of Cullman will be surprised and amazed at what they find within these pages!

This book of essays is an attempt to revisit some of the well known events of our county's past, add a little more background, and present our history from a Blount County point of view. In addition to illuminating some familiar topics, this book attempts to bring to light people and events who played significant roles in the development of Blount, but were somehow overlooked or skimmed over by the primary reference books-people and events which were the topic of conversation among our ancestors but over time, have been forgotten. These fun to read tales will promote a greater understanding of the history of Blount County.

Book Legendary Locals of Cullman County

Download or read book Legendary Locals of Cullman County written by Kay Cagle and Greg Richter and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In search of opportunity and freedom from oppression, European emigrants boarded ships, leaving behind their ancestral homes. They carved new lives from the unknown wilderness in the American South. The Speegle family settled in what would become southwest Cullman County, and the Brindley family claimed lands to the north. From the historic Streight's Raid exploit of the Civil War to the agricultural and social development of this region of northern Alabama, these early pioneers marched into history. In 1865, Col. Johann G. Cullmann, who was disillusioned with the anarchism in his native Germany, also sought new opportunity in America, eventually settling in Alabama. After being enticed by Colonel Cullmann's descriptive words of the area's virgin timber and fertile soils, five German families joined him. Encouraged by what they found, optimism flourished, word spread, and Cullman County's destiny was set. Its growth has been constant, and, today, its expansion is propelling the area to new heights of economic prominence.

Book excerpt: Although German immigrants were not the first to settle in the area now known as Cullman, they are the ones who put the city on the map by incorporating the town in 1874. The original five families that Col. John G. Cullmann recruited to colonize the town quickly grew into many more. With the assistance of local people, the Germans adapted to their new environment, and the colony took root. The strong German heritage and influence is still widespread today. Cullman was, and still is, an agricultural town. Immigrants discovered that cotton, sweet potatoes, and strawberries would readily grow in the area, and they wasted no time in filling the earth with these and other crops. Cullman also thrived on other industry, including numerous factories and merchants. The railroad running through the town played no small part in both the colonization and success of Cullman.
