Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of Jewish History, Vol. 2 of 3 The balmy breath of morning came freshly through the casement, half opened to admit the air, making the close atmosphere of the dark ened chamber seem doubly noxious. And the sickly glare of the untrimmed tapers that dimly lighted the room, enhanced the beauty of the stray sunbeam, that forced its way through the heavy draperies. There is a sweet charm in the quiet stillness of early morning, when earth, refreshed from her slumbers, sends her incense offering up to hea ven; and bee and bird and flower join in the universal hymn of praise, while the running stream and sparkling dew laugh in the light of the newly risen sun. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of Jewish History, Vol. 1 of 3 Agrippa held in his hand a roll of papyrus neatly written, which he was extending towards his eldest daughter. Thou wilt deliver it with my blessing to thy brother, beloved, he said, speaking with difficulty; therein is penned all that has occurred to thy father, in a life full Of vicissitude; it may serve as a warning and a lesson to my son in good or evil fortune. Tell him, Berenice, that I have done this, that when my heart is still, my tongue mute, enemies - and the fortunate have always many such - shall not speak falsely of Agrippa. When he reads in this scroll the tale Of my weakness and folly, let him consider, that his father was a man, sub ject to human passions, human foibles. That night, amid the tears of all who knew his virtues, the last monarch Of Judea paid the debt of nature and with him died the last faint ray of independence in Palestine. Book Folktales of the Jews V 3 Tales from Arab Lands

Download or read book Folktales of the Jews V 3 Tales from Arab Lands written by Dan Ben Amos and published by Jewish Publication Society. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to these generous donors for making the publication of the books in this series possible: Lloyd E. Cotsen; The Maurice Amado Foundation; National Endowment for the Humanities; and the National Foundation for Jewish Culture Tales from Arab Lands presents tales from North Africa, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq in the latest volume of the most important collection of Jewish folktales ever published. This is the third book in the multi-volume series in the tradition of Louis Ginzberg?s timeless classic, Legends of the Jews. The tales here and the others in this series have been selected from the Israel Folktale Archives (IFA), named in Honor of Dov Noy, at The University of Haifa, a treasure house of Jewish lore that has remained largely unavailable to the entire world until now. Since the creation of the State of Israel, the IFA has collected more than 20,000 tales from newly arrived immigrants, long-lost stories shared by their families from around the world. The tales come from the major ethno-linguistic communities of the Jewish world and are representative of a wide variety of subjects and motifs, especially rich in Jewish content and context. Each of the tales is accompanied by in-depth commentary that explains the tale's cultural, historical, and literary background and its similarity to other tales in the IFA collection, and extensive scholarly notes. There is also an introduction that describes the culture and its folk narrative tradition, a world map of the areas covered, illustrations, biographies of the collectors and narrators, tale type and motif indexes, a subject index, and a comprehensive bibliography. Until the establishment of the IFA, we had had only limited access to the wide range of Jewish folk narratives. Even in Israel, the gathering place of the most wide-ranging cross-section of world Jewry, these folktales have remained largely unknown. Many of the communities no longer exist as cohesive societies in their representative lands; the Holocaust, migration, and changes in living styles have made the continuation of these tales impossible. This series is a monument to a rich but vanishing oral tradition. This series is a monument to a rich but vanishing oral tradition.

Book From the Heart of Israel Jewish Tales and Types Classic Reprint

Download or read book From the Heart of Israel Jewish Tales and Types Classic Reprint written by Bernard Drachman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From the Heart of Israel Jewish Tales and Types Right is not for the one who is responsible for the present effort to say, but must be left to the decision of an impartial public, which will not fail to tell truthfully whether it has found aught of pleasure or profit in the stories Of Jewish life hereinafter contained. But it may be permitted to the writer to say that, in his humble opinion, both of the criticisms quoted above are based on erroneous conceptions. The telling of tales is neither independent of nor contradictory to the Torah; that is to say, it may be a most excellent method of inculcating pure and noble lessons, and has always been used for such purpose by the great teachers in Israel. Book Approaching the World s Religions Volume 1

Download or read book Approaching the World s Religions Volume 1 written by Robert Boyd and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-05-04 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophically Thinking about World Religions is different from other works in the discipline today. It deviates from the typical approaches used for the study of world religions. Its goal is to engage readers in thinking hard about world religions, not about the data surrounding those traditions. By focusing on philosophical questions, each reader should be challenged to do their own investigations that may reveal the heart of these traditions. Another stance that this project takes that distinguishes it from other texts in the discipline is that it advocates an inclusivist perspective regarding the world religions. Pluralism, which is the predominate assumption today, ends either in contradiction or in the development of a metatheory that dismisses crucial distinctions between the various traditions or eliminates some ancient religions because they do not fit the metatheory. By taking an open inclusivist approach, all religious traditions may engage at the table of dialogue. The final essay is about justice and social affairs. While that discussion is couched within the context of a particular tradition, each religious tradition must have the discussion. But it must be more than an intrareligious dialogue; it must become an interreligious dialogue.

Book Cultures of the Jews Volume 3

Download or read book Cultures of the Jews Volume 3 written by David Biale and published by Knopf Group E-Books. This book was released on 2011-08-17 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scattered over much of the world throughout most of their history, are the Jews one people or many? How do they resemble and how do they differ from Jews in other places and times? What have their relationships been to the cultures of their neighbors? To address these and similar questions, some of the finest scholars of our day have contributed their insights to Cultures of the Jews, a winner of the National Jewish Book Award upon its hardcover publication in 2002. Constructing their essays around specific cultural artifacts that were created in the period and locale under study, the contributors describe the cultural interactions among different Jews–from rabbis and scholars to non-elite groups, including women–as well as between Jews and the surrounding non-Jewish world. What they conclude is that although Jews have always had their own autonomous traditions, Jewish identity cannot be considered the fixed product of either ancient ethnic or religious origins. Rather, it has shifted and assumed new forms in response to the cultural environment in which the Jews have lived. Modern Encounters, the third volume in Cultures of the Jews, examines communities, ways of life, and both high and folk culture in the modern era in Western, Central, and Eastern Europe; the Ladino Diaspora; North Africa and the Middle East; Ethiopia; mandatory Palestine and the State of Israel; and the United States. From the Trade Paperback edition.

But Judith's cousin Helen, who had come from college to spend her spring vacation with the family, had pleaded so hard in Judith's behalf that Mrs. Weil had smilingly promised to postpone the little girl's bedtime that evening until eight o'clock.
