Book Telling Border Life Stories

Download or read book Telling Border Life Stories written by Donna M Kabalen de Bichara and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Normal0falsefalsefalseEN-USX-NONEX-NONEVoices from the borderlands push against boundaries in more ways than one, as Donna M. Kabalen de Bichara ably demonstrates in this investigation into the twentieth-century autobiographical writing of four women of Mexican origin who lived in the American Southwest. Until recently, little attention has been paid to the writing of the women included in this study. As Kabalen de Bichara notes, it is precisely such historical exclusion of texts written by Mexican American women that gives particular significance to the reexamination of the five autobiographical works that provide the focus for this in-depth study. “Early Life and Education” and Dew on the Thorn by Jovita González (1904–83), deal with life experiences in Texas and were likely written between 1926 and the 1940s; both texts were published in 1997. Romance of a Little Village Girl, first published in 1955, focuses on life in New Mexico, and was written by Cleofas Jaramillo (1878–1956) when the author was in her seventies. A Beautiful, Cruel Country, by Eva Antonio Wilbur-Cruce (1904–98), introduces the reader to history and a way of life that developed in the cultural space of Arizona. Created over a ten-year period, this text was published in 1987, just eleven years before the author’s death. Hoyt Street, by Mary Helen Ponce (b. 1938), began as a research paper during the period of the autobiographer’s undergraduate studies (1974–80), and was published in its present form in 1993. These border autobiographies can be understood as attempts on the part of the Mexican American female autobiographers to put themselves into the text and thus write their experiences into existence.

Book Stories of the Border Marches

Download or read book Stories of the Border Marches written by John Lang and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2023-07-12 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a very readable collection of old Border tales from Chambers and Scott and other sources. Kinmont Willie and Grisell Home, Frank Stokoe and mad Jack Hall of Otterburn, are familiar figures of whom one is always glad to read . The sheep-stealers and highwaymen , illicit distillers and other picturesque ruffians, who abounded on the Borders not so much more than two centuries, have gone forever, but the Border farmer retains his vigorous individuality , and there is still good sport on the Borders, as the authors remind us in their tale - almost too good to be true — of a seventy – pound salmon.

Book A Frontier Knight A Story of Early Texan Border Life

Download or read book A Frontier Knight A Story of Early Texan Border Life written by Amy Ella Blanchard and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE sun was shining gloriously across level sweeps of blue-grass meadow-land, and sending its beams through the windows of a plain, substantial, country house, where it made squares of brightness on the whitewashed walls, sharply outlining the shadows, and touching to gold the fair hair of a girl who sat motionless on a low stool near the window. She was thinking intently and did not heed the entrance of an older girl who glanced at her with a smile and began to busy herself about the room. Finally the girl at the window gave a deep sigh and stretched her hands above her head. “Oh, is it dinner time, Christine?” she said. “Very near,” was the reply. “What a brown study you were in, Alison; you must have been miles away.” “And so I was. I must decide, you know.” “Yes, I do know.” There was a serious note in Christine’s voice. “And have you decided?” she asked after a pause. “Yes.” The girl arose and came to where her sister stood. She laid her hands on the shoulders of the other and looked steadfastly into the clear eyes. “I am going with you and John,” she said. “There are just the three of us, and I cannot be separated from you, even though I have this home for always, mine at Aunt Miranda’s death and all its comforts while I live here. I have thought it over. I have thought of the days which will go by all alike; everything just so, all cut and dried; up at such an hour every morning; hot rolls for breakfast on Wednesdays and Saturdays, cold bread on Mondays. Every chair set at exactly such an angle, Aunt Miranda always with her hair parted precisely, Uncle Brown with his whiskers curled in just such a fashion, never a hair out of place; never any excitement; once a month the minister and his wife to dinner; once a year a day in

Book Senior Leadership Roundtable on Military and Defence Aspects of Border Security in South East Europe

Download or read book Senior Leadership Roundtable on Military and Defence Aspects of Border Security in South East Europe written by I.V. Lochard and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2019-02-08 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The region of South East Europe (SEE), which is home to both NATO and Partnership for Peace (PfP) countries, serves as an important corridor between Europe and the Middle East, North Africa, and the Caucasus. In recent years, however, SEE has also experienced high levels of cross-border, military and defense-related challenges in the form of migration, smuggling, terrorism, and cyber threats. Furthermore, the use of the new information environment (IE) to further extremism in SEE and elsewhere in NATO and PfP countries has had far-reaching command and control (C2) implications for the Alliance. A collaborative interdisciplinary, international and regional approach is clearly needed to adequately assess and address these hybrid threats. This book presents papers delivered at the NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) event: “Senior Leadership Roundtable on Military and Defense Aspects of Border Security in South East Europe”, held in Berovo, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia* from 23-30 September 2017. The aim of this special SPS grant was to maximize opportunities for extensive dialogue and collaboration between senior regional members, and the almost 70 distinguished academic and legal experts, as well as current or former senior-level practitioners from various governments, NATO bodies, and international organization that participated. It was the first SPS event of its kind in SEE as well as the first NATO SPS grant to be co-executed by the U.S. Department of Defense via the U.S. National Defense University. Other co-organizers were the C4I and Cyber Center of Excellence at George Mason University and PfP partner institution, the General Mihailo Apostolski Military Academy – Skopje, Associate Member of the University of Goce Delčev – Stip. The book is divided into five parts: global trends, defining the problem, policy and academic solutions, national and regional case studies, and technological solutions. It will prove an invaluable source of reference for all those with an interest in the SEE region as well as cross-border hybrid threats, in general. * Turkey recognizes the Republic of Macedonia with its constitutional name.

Book Borders and Border Crossings in the Contemporary British Short Story

Download or read book Borders and Border Crossings in the Contemporary British Short Story written by Barbara Korte and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a contribution to both border studies and short story studies. In today’s world, there is ample evidence of the return of borders worldwide: as material reality, as a concept, and as a way of thinking. This collection of critical essays focuses on the ways in which the contemporary British short story mirrors, questions and engages with border issues in national and individual life. At the same time, the concept of the border, as well as neighbouring notions of liminality and intersectionality, is used to illuminate the short story’s unique aesthetic potential. The first section, “Geopolitics and Grievable Lives”, includes chapters that address the various ways in which contemporary stories engage with our newly bordered world and borders within contemporary Britain. The second section examines how British short stories engage with “Ethnicity and Liminal Identities”, while the third, “Animal Encounters and Metamorphic Bodies”, focuses on stories concerned with epistemological borders and borderlands of existence and identity. Taken together, the chapters in this volume demonstrate the varied and complex ways in which British short stories in the twenty-first century engage with the concept of the border.
