Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the West I fear I cannot claim, therefore, any higher motive than to illustrate an era of which Californian history has preserved the incidents more often than the char acter of the actors, an era which the panegyrist was too often content to bridge over with a general com pliment to its survivors, an era still so recent that in attempting to revive its poetry, I am conscious also of awakening the more promc recollections of these same survivors, and yet an era replete with a certain heroic Greek poetry, of which perhaps none were more unconscious than the heroes themselves. And I shall be quite content to have collected here merely the materials for the Iliad that is yet to be sung. Said the president of the Arcadia street-railway, proudly waving his umbrella at arches, gables, Renaissance turrets, Early English buttresses, and a motley company of terra-cotta bedizenments, friezes, parapets, and finials on the new facades, which looked, amid the cheap wooden shops and dry-goods box architecture of a former day, as if they had strayed into the town and did not know the way out. How 's that for building? He cried, lunging his umbrella enthusiasti cally into the eye of a passer-by. Beg pardon, ma'am. Oh, Mrs. Crowe! Going out? Oh, plenty of time. Now, there 's a woman 's made most fifteen thousand dollars in real estate this last year - jest a woman! Old Rolfe 's made thirty, an' Curwin an' Bragg as much again; an' T. J. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Tales of the West Highlands, Vol. 2: Orally Collected Before this there was a king, and he wished to see his son with a wife before she should depart. His son said he had better go for a wife; and he gave him half a hundred pounds to get her. He went forward in to a hostelry to stay in it. He went down to a chamber with a good fire in front of him; and when he had gotten meat, the man of the house went down to talk to him. He told the man of the house the journey on which he was. The man of the house told him he need not go further; that there was a little house opposite to his sleeping chamber; that the man of the house had three fine daughters; and if he would stand in the window of his chamber in the morning, that he would see one after another coming to dress herself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the Trail: Short Stories of Western Life These Tales of the Trail are based upon actual facts which came under the personal ob servation of the author, whose reputation as a writer of the frontier is national. His other works have met with phenomenal success, and these Sketches, which have appeared from time to time in the current literature of the United States, are now compiled, and will form another interesting series of stories of that era of great adventures, when the country west of the Mis souri was unknown except to the trappers, hunters, and army officers. Some of the characters around which are woven the thrilling incidents of these Tales were men of world-wide reputation; they have long since joined the choir invisible, but their names as pioneers in the genesis of great States which then formed the theater of their exploits will live as long as the United States exists as a great nation. Book Stories of the Great West Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of the Great West Classic Reprint written by Theodore Roosevelt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the Great West As a youth Theodore Roosevelt was an enthusiastic student of Western history and pioneer types. Later, as ranchman and hunter, he grew to know intimately and to love deeply the rough, free life of the Western plains. Mr. Roosevelt's interest in history probably was inherited, but his fondness for outdoor life grew out of his grateful love for his foster mother - the green earth - who took the delicate youth in her rough, but kindly, embrace and gave him a sound body and a clear vision. It was during the quiet evenings, and the otherwise idle hours, spent at Elkhorn," his Dakota ranch, that Theodore Roosevelt penned most of the fascinating pictures of frontier and ranch life that make up this present volume. "The Backwoodsmen of the Alleghanies" and "Lewis and Clark and the Exploration of the Far West" are from The Winning of the West," permission to republish here having kindly been granted by G. P. Putnam's Sons. The other stories are from Hero Tales" and Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail." Some of these stories have been condensed from the original version for reasons of space. It had a breadth of dirty canvas thrown across it, from under which the occupant had crawled out. Beneath might be seen the edges of two or three worn and dirty cotton quilts and a pair of blankets of like dinginess. Below this lay a worn elk hide, and under all a lower-breadth of the over lapping canvas. It was such a bed as primarily a cow puncher might have had, but fallen into such condition that no cow camp wouid have tolerated it. It also introduced or brought about the existence Of economic, social, and governmental prob lems the consideration and efforts at solution Of which have invited the attention Of the ablest men Of the nation. Like all great problems these have served to develop types Of manhood, - yes, a type Of citizenship that will leave its impress upon the policies and the achievements Of the age. Each generation, each epoch, has its own problems and creates others for the men and the women, the statesmen and the philosophers, that follow after. So, with the mantle Of charity for the faults and the foibles Of some, let us find enjoyment and profit in contempla tion Of the character and achievements Of the many, and profit by the study Of the conditions that influenced the aims and the actions Of all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wilderness, or Braddock's Times, Vol. 1: A Tale of the West Let melancholy spirits talk as they please concerning the degeneracy and increasing miseries of mankind, I will not believe them. They have been speaking ill of them selves, and predicting worse of their posterity, from time immemo'rial; and yet, in the present year, 1823, the one himdreth part of their gloomy forebodings had been realized, the earth must have become a Pandemonium, and men something worse -than devils, (for devils they have been long ago, in the opinion of these charitable denuncia tors, ) I am free to assert, that we have as many honest men, pretty women, healthy children, cultivated fields, con venisht houses, elegant kinds of in and comfortable clothes, as any generation of ever possessed. Book Tales of magic tales in print

Download or read book Tales of magic tales in print written by Willem De Blecourt and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the nineteenth century folklorists, and the general public in their wake, have assumed the orality of fairy tales. Only lately have more and more specialists been arguing in favour of at least an interdependence between oral and printed distribution of stories. This book takes an extreme position in that debate: as far as Tales of magic is concerned, the initial transmission proceded exclusively through prints. From a historical perspective, this is the only viable approach; the opposite assumption of a vast unrecorded and thus inaccessible reservoir of oral stories, presents a horror vacui. Only in the course of the nineteenth century, when folklorists started collecting in the field and asked their informants for fairy tales, was this particular genre incorporated into a then feeble oral tradition. Even then story tellers regularly reverted to printed texts. Every recorded fairy tale can be shown to be dependent on previous publications, or to be a new composition, constructed on the basis of fragments of stories already in existence. Tales of magic, tales in print traces the textual history of a number of fairy tale clusters, linking the findings of literary historians on the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries to the material collected by nineteenth- and twentieth-century field workers. While it places fairy tales as a genre firmly in a European context, it also follows particular stories in their dispersion over the rest of the world.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Trail Hunter: Tale of the Far West The present volume of Aimard's Indian Tales is devoted to the earlier adventures of those hunters, whose acquaintance the reader has formed, I trust with pleasure, in the preceding series. It does not become me to say any thing further in its favor, than that the sustained interest of the narrative, which has been regarded as the charm of stories referring to life in the desert and prairie, has not been departed from in this instance. The stories themselves supply an innate proof of the writer's correctness to Nature, and, in truth, many of the scenes are SO startling that they must be the result of personal observation.
