Book Tales from the Territory Stories of Southeast Alaska

Download or read book Tales from the Territory Stories of Southeast Alaska written by Robert Kinerk and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Kinerk grew up hearing great Alaska stories. He has recreated many of them in Tales from the Territory. He lived in Alaska from when it was a territory, working as a reporter, as a logger, and an ambulance attendant. He labored in a pulp mill and moonlighted as a night-time disc jockey. His stories are of rugged and often solitary women and men driven by the demands of climate and of distance to rely mostly on themselves. On their own, they thread their way past life's snares and pitfalls. In Tales from the Territory, a reader will discover kids and grown-ups, priests and prostitutes, arsonists and artists working out the adventures and misadventures life presents them. Sometimes they tackle that job rightly, sometimes wrongly. But they always do it humanly, with all the bumps and warts and wanderings that being human entails. They bring to the task of living their accumulated stores of strength and their burdens of frailty. Those burdens and those strengths are at the heart of Tales from the Territory.

Each chapter is rooted in Bjorn’s own adventures and will intertwine fascinating history, interviews, and his reflections. Bjorn’s writing, sometimes poignant and often wickedly funny, brings to mind Hunter S. Thompson and Patrick McManus. Chapters touch on legends such as Alexander Baranov, Soapy Smith, James Wickersham, and the Kóoshdaa Káa (Kushtaka) to lesser known but fascinating characters like “Naked” Joe Knowles and purported serial killer Ed Krause. From duplicitous if not downright diabolical humans to demons of the fjords and deep seas and cryptids of the forest, Bjorn presents a lively cross-section of the haunter and the haunted found in Alaska’s Inside Passage.

Showcased are twenty accomplished Native storytellers, recognized as masters by their people, who come from the Deg Hit'an, Koyukon, Gwich'in, Northern and Southern Tutchone, Kaska, Tagish, Upper and Lower Tanana, Tanacross, Upper Kuskokwim, Dena'ina, Ahtna, and Eyak communities. Men and women, young and old, recount popular tales of legendary times, such as how Raven Shaped the World. They also share meaningful, sometimes intimate, stories about their own lives, their families, or the history of their people. Ice to Fire is a two hundred year fictional history of a Native fishing village in Southeast Alaska. Topu, the village where the story takes place, is a fictional place based on many of the characteristics of native villages in the area. The story is a mixture of history, stories and folklore told to Marty Strauss while living and working in Alaska. Against the backdrop of Southeast Alaska Ice to Fire tells the story of a native people evolving as invaders from the south and Europe enter the area. Each new group brings changes and challenges for the village to consider and possibly adopt while struggling to maintain their culture and traditions. The story spans a time from just before the Russians arrive in Alaska to the latter part of the 20th Century. Although Topu is a fictional location, the story is based on interviews with elders and listening to their Native history as told through dance and stories.

Imbued with mystery to outsider eyes, the fierce, carved symbols silently spoke of territories, legends, memorials, and paid debts. Today many of these cultural icons are preserved for the public to enjoy in heritage parks and historical centers through southeast Alaska. And, after nearly a century of repression, totem carving among Alaska's Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian peoples is flourishing again. In this newly revised edition of Alaska's Totem Poles, readers learn about the history and use of totems, clan crests, symbolism, and much more. A special section describes where to go to view totems. Author Pat Kramer traveled throughout the homelands of the Totem People—along Alaska's Panhandle, the coast of British Columbia, and into the Northwest—meeting the people, learning their stores, and researching and photographing totem poles. Foreword writer David A. Boxley also offers the unique perspective of a Native Alaskan carver who has been a leader in the renaissance. This is a handy guide for travelers in Southeast Alaska who want to learn more about Alaska's totems. There's even a guide of where to view totems in the state. Ravens, killer whales (Orca) and bears... they're all represented in the totem.
