Download or read book Tales From Far and Near Classic Reprint written by Arthur Guy Terry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales From Far and Near Very long ago an old blind man, named Homer, sang songs to the people of Greece. He told stories in his songs, and other men wrote down some of them in books. The tale of the Wooden Horse is one of these stories. There was once a long war which lasted for ten years. Some men of the land of Greece were fighting against the people of the city of Troy. The Greeks sailed in their ships to Troy. But they could not get into the city, for the gates were shut. So they put up tents and built huts on the plains outside the city walls, and waited there. Sometimes the men of Troy rushed out of the city and tried to drive the Greeks away. But they could not do this. Sometimes the Greeks tried to break down the gates or climb the high walls of the city. But they too failed. At the end of ten years, the Greeks began to grow tired of the long fight. They wanted to go back to their homes but they did not like to leave without first taking the city. At last, one of the leaders found a way to do this. He made the Greeks build a large horse of wood The horse was hollow inside, and it was so large that it would hold twelve men. It was moved upon wheels. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Juvenile Album: Or Tales From Far and Near Wan! Afraid of a dog! Come here Chance, and give your paw to this little boy. He will soon see that you do not mean to hurt him. Come Willy, make friends with poor Chance, and then I will tell you something about dogs, and particularly of our old favourite. The animal came close up to the little boy, who, taking fast hold of his aunt's hand, suffered him to put his paw on the tips of his fingers, and then, as if glad that the danger was over, the child lifted himself upon his aunt's knee, and claimed her promise of telling him something concerning dogs. I suppose, said Mrs. L., you know, that when our wise Creator made man, he gave him power to rule over all the beasts of the earth; not because he was the strongest, or the swiftest, or because he could see, hear, smell, or run better than they, but because he had more sense and reason; and although some beasts, and especially dogs, are often known to be more generous, more friendly than some men, this is only because men do not make proper use of their reason, and choose to act against God's commands. The most useful of all the beasts tamed by man has been the dog, which he has either found in, or carried to all parts of the world. These valuable creatures will live in all climates, bear fatigue, hunger, and thirst, and in every instance will give up their own enjoyment and comfort for that of their master. When you think of all the differences made by cold and heat, by plenty or scarcity of food, by living always in warm houses or stables, or running about in a wild and savage state, you will not be surprised when I tell you, that in the beginning of the world there were not so many2 the guard. Book Fairy Tales and Other Stories Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fairy Tales and Other Stories Classic Reprint written by Hans Christian Andersen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 984 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fairy Tales and Other Stories And the Shilling rattled and jumped for joy as it was thrust back into the purse. So here it lay among strange companions, who came and went, each making room for a successor but the Shilling from home always remained in the bag which was a distinction for it. Several weeks had gone by, and the Shilling had travelled far out into the world without exactly knowing where he was, though he learned from the other coins that they were French or Italian. One said they were in such and such a town, another that they had reached such and such a spot; but the Shilling could form no idea of all this. He who has his head in a bag sees nothing; and this was the case with the Shilling. But one day, as he lay there, he noticed that the purse was not shut, and so he crept forward to the opening, to take a look around. He ought not to have done so; but he was inquisitive, and people Often have to pay for that. He slipped out into the fob: and when the purse was taken out at night the Shilling remained behind, and was sent out into the passage with the clothes. There he fell upon the floor: no one heard it, no one saw it. Next morning the clothes were carried back into the room; the gentleman put them on, and continued his journey, while the Shilling remained behind. The coin was found, and was required to go into ser vice again, so he was sent out with three other coins. It is a pleasant thing to look about one in the world, thought the Shilling, and to get to know strange people and foreign customs. And now began the history of the Shilling, as told by himself. If now we were to ask what he brings, not only in his pocket, but in his mind and in his heart, this stranger, what ideals he owns, what company he kept in the country he left that shaped his hopes and ambitions, might it not, if the answer were right, be a help to a better mutual understand ing between host and guest? For the May flower did not hold all who in this world have battled for freedom of home, of hope, and of conscience. The struggle ls bigger than that. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Nursery Tales From Many Lands IN the far-off days when the story-teller watched his listeners in order to let their faces guide or quicken his inspiration he must have been in close sympathy with the eager children who stood near him. Some times he pleased their vivid imaginations with a cumulative tale in which the emphasis of rhythmic repetitions helped the story to unfold simply and directly and at the same time gave the delighted children a feeling of growing familiarity with each recurring cycle. Or perhaps he told a simple folk tale in which the actors - human beings or animals revealed in their experiences some hint of a universal truth. Sometimes a genuine fairy-tale with a well} developed plot was his theme, and by means of artistic imagery he flashed forth the lasting vision of an ideal. Through the ages the story-teller's tales have been bequeathed as a rich inheritance to the children of to-day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pierre and His People: Tales of the Far North The next day after the arson I walked for hours where London was busiest. The sh0p windows fascinated me; they always did; but that day I seemed, subconsciously, to be looking for something. At last I found it. It was a second-hand sh0p in Covent Garden. In the window there was the uniform of an officer of the time of Wellington, and beside it - the leather coat and fur cap of a trapper of the Hudson's Bay Company! At that window I commenced to build again upon the ashes of last night's fire. Pretty Pierre, the French half-breed, or rather the original of him as I knew him when a child, looked out of the window at me. So I went home, and sitting in front of the fire which had received my manuscript the night before, with a pad upon my knee, I began to write The Patrol of the Cypress Hills which opens Pierre and His People. The next day was Sunday. I went to service at the Foundling Hospital in Bloomsbury, and while listening superficially to the sermon I was also reading the psalms. I came upon these words, Free among the Dead like unto them that are wounded and lie in the grave, that are out of remembrance, and this text, which I used in the story The Patrol of the Cypress Hills, became, in a sense, the text for all the stories which came after. It seemed to suggest the lives and the end of the lives of the workers of the pioneer world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Though if he really was an outlaw he seemed to enjoy being one. He usually laughed whenever John nie Green or his father tried to catch him, or when they attempted to frighten him. And on the whole he was quite the boldest, noisiest, and most impertinent of all the creatures that lived in Pleasant Valley. His house stood in a tall elm, not too far from the cornfield. And those that dwelt near him never could complain that the neighborhood was quiet. It was never quiet where Old Mr. Crow was.
