Book Detroit Hustle

Download or read book Detroit Hustle written by Amy Haimerl and published by Running Press Adult. This book was released on 2016-05-03 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Journalist Amy Haimerl and her husband had been priced out of their Brooklyn neighborhood. Seeing this as a great opportunity to start over again, they decide to cash in their savings and buy an abandoned house for 35,000 in Detroit, the largest city in the United States to declare bankruptcy. As she and her husband restore the 1914 Georgian Revival, a stately brick house with no plumbing, no heat, and no electricity, Amy finds a community of Detroiters who, like herself, aren't afraid of a little hard work or things that are a little rough around the edges. Filled with amusing and touching anecdotes about navigating a real-estate market that is rife with scams, finding a contractor who is a lover of C.S. Lewis and willing to quote him liberally, and neighbors who either get teary-eyed at the sight of newcomers or urge Amy and her husband to get out while they can, Amy writes evocatively about the charms and challenges of finding her footing in a city whose future is in question. Detroit Hustle is a memoir that is both a meditation on what it takes to make a house a home, and a love letter to a much-derided city.

Book The View from the Grass Roots Another Look

Download or read book The View from the Grass Roots Another Look written by Gregory J. Rummo and published by . This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Confidently recommended reading, The View from the Grass Roots is filled from cover to cover with keen insights, profound thoughts, and a deep and diverse understanding of the human condition." -Midwest Book Review "[Rummo is] uniquely qualified . . . It is clear from the quality of his writing that he has been at this for quite a while. Plenty of exercise for the mind and soul." -Willard Samuel, Adjunct Scholar at Frontiers of Freedom "Greg Rummo is a great writer and a great human being, facts that shine like precious stones in his prolific output. I have trouble not hating him for his talent and energy." -Joe Klock, Sr., Author and Syndicated Columnist "Greg Rummo is one of my heroes. His book masterfully gives a cohesive view of liberal politics and biased media and the impact they have on the American culture. And he does it with engaging evidence." -Thomas Ciesielka, TC Public Relations "By approaching the latest public issues from the angle of religion, informed by Christianity, Gregory Rummo offers an attractive corrective to the assumptions often underlying coverage of stories in mainstream print media. His unashamed point of view can be infuriating . . . for example, to state his case, he often sets up so-called liberals as targets, then dismantles them by his arguments; it is a facile device. But there is much merit to what he says. And he is never mean. Which is high praise indeed." -Charles Saydah, Letters to the Editor, The Record

Book Reveal Your Detroit

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bradford Frost
  • Publisher : Painted Turtle
  • Release : 2013
  • ISBN : 9780814339633
  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Reveal Your Detroit written by Bradford Frost and published by Painted Turtle. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a unique partnership model with forty-five community organizations, the Detroit Institute of Arts' 2012 community photography project Reveal Your Detroit offered Detroit residents the chance to respond to the Museum's contemporary photography exhibition Detroit Revealed: Photographs 2000-2010. Using disposable cameras, each participant captured people, places, and things that make their lives in Detroit distinctive, inspired by the questions "what does your Detroit look like?" and "how do you want others to see it?." In the final display, over 2,300 images rotated across 60 digital photo frames, from a selection of over 10,000 submitted. For this volume, author Bradford Frost selected 192 images from the exhibit to showcase the perspectives of hundreds of residents and the places they presented, from the gritty to the sublime. Reveal Your Detroit is composed of two main sections-The Authentic City and Detroit's Vital Transformation-photo essays that evoke Detroit's spirited resolve and response to the dominant imagery of the city in decline. Photographers visit favorite Detroit sites like Eastern Market, the Detroit Riverfront, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, Comerica Park, Michigan Central Station, and the Fox Theater; but they also highlight lesser known spots, like the cobblestone streets of West Canfield in Midtown, Hostel Detroit in Corktown, and the Central Business District Community Garden Downtown. Photos highlight Detroit's vibrant street and folk art, the diversity of the city's natural environment, and the vitality of residents and businesses in a range of city neighborhoods. The participating community groups are introduced in short text sections throughout the book and credited in the captions of each photo they submitted. Frost concludes with a personal section containing snapshots of a few of his own Detroit highlights. Reveal Your Detroit is not only a beautiful gift book and record of a transforming American city, it is also a testament to the possibilities of creative partnership between grassroots organizations and larger cultural institutions. Anyone with roots in Detroit or an interest in community-based art will appreciate the multilayered picture created by Reveal Your Detroit.

Book Detroit City Is the Place to Be

Download or read book Detroit City Is the Place to Be written by Mark Binelli and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The fall and maybe rise of Detroit, America's most epic urban failure, from local native and Rolling Stone reporter Mark BinelliOnce America's capitalist dream town, Detroit is our country's greatest urban failure, having fallen the longest and the farthest. But the city's worst crisis yet (and that's saying something) has managed to do the unthinkable: turn the end of days into a laboratory for the future. Urban planners, land speculators, neo-pastoral agriculturalists, and utopian environmentalists--all have been drawn to Detroit's baroquely decaying, nothing-left-to-lose frontier. With an eye for both the darkly absurd and the radically new, Detroit-area native and Rolling Stone writer Mark Binelli has chronicled this convergence. Throughout the city's "museum of neglect"--its swaths of abandoned buildings, its miles of urban prairie--he tracks the signs of blight repurposed, from the school for pregnant teenagers to the killer ex-con turned street patroller, from the organic farming on empty lots to GM's wager on the Volt electric car and the mayor's realignment plan (the most ambitious on record) to move residents of half-empty neighborhoods into a viable, new urban center.Sharp and impassioned, Detroit City Is the Place to Be is alive with the sense of possibility that comes when a city hits rock bottom. Beyond the usual portrait of crime, poverty, and ruin, we glimpse a future Detroit that is smaller, less segregated, greener, economically diverse, and better functioning--what might just be the first post-industrial city of our new century"--
