Book excerpt: Printed in COLOR Recently it was announced that China's PLA Navy now has more ships (300) than the U.S. Navy (287). This book covers the bulk of Taiwan's Navy's warships including destroyers, frigates, and corvettes. Taiwan is in the midst of upgrading their defense posture with indigenous boats designed to ward off an attack. Their new corvette is fast and the high-speed minelayers coming on line in November 2021 will go a long way towards denying naval dominance by an enemy around the island nation. The corvette has been dubbed an "aircraft carrier killer" by the press and that tells me Taiwan is concerned with China's plans to launch several new aircraft carriers in the coming years. The next generation (after the ships that are currently undergoing sea trials) will probably be nuclear powered. I suspect they will also include a full complement of defensive weapons to include lasers, rail guns and as yet unannounced sonic weapons similar to what was used in Cuba, but on a much larger scale. It remains to be seen if China's strategy of moving the conflict further away from their shores will be effective. It also remains to be seen how China will deal with a fully-capable adversary in their rear, if conflict breaks out on the new islands being built. I suspect we will see this all play out before the year 2030. 4th Watch Publishing Co. is a HUBZONE SDVOSB. Our books are compact, tightly-bound paperback, full-size (8 1⁄2 by 11 inches), with large text and glossy covers. https://usgovpub.com

Book excerpt: China Surface Warships, 2019 - 2020. Color photos of active Chinese PLA Navy Surface Warships Recently it was announced that China's PLA Navy now has more ships (300) than the U.S. Navy (287). This book covers the bulk of Beijing's Navy including destroyers, frigates, and corvettes. These categories have seen more growth since 2005 than any other. The rapid growth of ships in these categories is in keeping with the Military Strategy China released in 2015 which states, "... the PLA Navy (PLAN) will gradually shift its focus from "offshore waters defense" to the combination of "offshore waters defense" with "open seas protection," and build a combined, multi-functional and efficient marine combat force structure." The launching of new ships is in addition to retiring very old ships (pre-1990) and modernizing ships build after that. U.S. Navy ships are larger, and the U.S. has more aircraft carriers - China has one active, one being fitted out and 2 (or 3) being built. We plan to go into China's aircraft carriers in depth in another book in the fall if there is enough interest. This book does not go into the ships of the PLA Navy Reserve Force, the People's Armed Police (PAP) or the China Militia (中国民). Those could be another book if there is enough interest). Book China s Evolving Surface Fleet

Download or read book China s Evolving Surface Fleet written by Peter Dutton and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2017 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past fifteen years, the People's Liberation Army Navy's (PLAN's) missile fast-attack craft and amphibious fleets have been significantly modernized. While these two types of vessels have not increased in numbers, their capabilities have increased exponentially. This publication examines the People's Liberation Army's (PLA's) doctrine and training strategy in order to analyze present and predict future missions by these military vessels. China's deterrence posture is improved greatly by these ships and boats, which aid coastal water defense, and threaten Taiwanese attempts to gain independence. In addition, these two fleets improve China's long-range sealift capabilities, and help with the PLA's traditional, and new, nontraditional security practices. These fleets allow the PLAN to continue offshore operations, and begin "blue-water", or "far-seas" operations, helping the United States to predict the future nature of Chinese maritime missions. Book Revisiting Taiwan s Defense Strategy

Download or read book Revisiting Taiwan s Defense Strategy written by Naval War College and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's recent military modernization has fundamentally altered Taiwan's security options. New Chinese submarines, advanced surface-to-air missiles, and, especially, short-range ballistic and land-attack cruise missiles have greatly reduced Taiwan's geographic advantage. Taipei can no longer expect to counter Chinese military strengths in a symmetrical manner, with Patriot interceptors, diesel submarines, surface warships, F-16 fighters, and P-3 maritime patrol aircraft. Taiwan must therefore rethink and redesign its defense strategy, emphasizing the asymmetrical advantage of being the defender, seeking to deny the People's Republic its strategic objectives rather than attempting to destroy its weapons systems. This would enable Taipei to deter more effectively Beijing's use of coercive force, would provide better means for Taiwan to resist Chinese attacks should deterrence fail, and would provide the United States additional time to determine whether intervening in a cross-strait conflict was in its own national interest. The strategy would also place the responsibility for Taiwan's defense squarely on its own military. Finally, it would restore the United States to unambiguous compliance with the Taiwan Relations Act. The People's Republic of China (PRC) has been increasingly explicit about its military modernization objectives. China's 2004 white paper on national defense stated that “the PLA[People's Liberation Army]will . . . enhance the development of its operational strength with priority given to the Navy, Air Force and Second Artillery Force, and strengthen its comprehensive deterrence and warfighting capabilities.” The introduction of new classes of advanced surface warships; the unveiling of new nuclear-powered submarines, tactical fighter aircraft, and short- and medium-range ballistic missiles with advanced warheads; and an antisatellite demonstration—all attest to the determined pursuit of these goals. Many analysts believe that China's near-term purposes are to deter Taiwan from declaring independence, to provide leverage by which to coerce a reunification with Taiwan if deterrence fails, and to inhibit or delay U.S. intervention in such a conflict. Chinese employment strategies for these new weapons systems and potential capabilities remain unknown, though statements from senior leaders provide important hints. For example, President Hu Jintao is said to have stated in August 2007 that China had five major military priorities relative to Taiwan: establishing military readiness, conducting demonstrative exercises, “imposing a blockade on the Taiwan Strait,” “carrying out combined firepower attacks,” and “[conducting a] cross-sea landing.” Guo Boxiong, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, boasted in March 2008, “We have the resolve and capability to deal with a major 'Taiwan independence' incident at any time.” The likely use of force would encompass three components: long-range precision bombardment, invasion, and blockade. These attack mechanisms would also likely be conducted in close coordination, not independently. Taiwan faces the daunting challenge of how best to deny China the fulfillment of these objectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: it ensured that friction over the Taiwan Strait did not escalate into a full-blown war. In fact, the Taiwan Patrol Force did its job so well that virtually nothing has been written about it. U.S. Navy ships acted both as a buffer between the two antagonists and as a trip wire in case of aggression. The force fulfilled the latter function twice in the 1950s -- during the first (1954-55) and second (1958) Taiwan Strait crises --

Book excerpt: Printed in COLOR I gotta say I was impressed when I began looking into the Japanese Navy ships. They also have a terrific Coast Guard (around 60 ships). You will notice that I show F-35B aircraft landing on the aircraft carriers and also on the helicopter landing area on the destroyers. Not sure they can do that in rough seas, but if Elon Musk can land a rocket on a barge in the ocean, I'm confident the Japanese Navy can land an F-35B on a destroyer. Perhaps a computer on board the ship could take over controls of the F-35B during landings to compensate for the motion of the ship? This is the third book on Surface Warships we published. Generally, we stick to surface ships over 600 tons. Other books include China, Russia and Iran.

Book Globalization and Security Relations across the Taiwan Strait

Download or read book Globalization and Security Relations across the Taiwan Strait written by Ming-chin Monique Chu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an interdisciplinary examination of cross-Taiwan Strait relations and the complex dynamics at play in the region. Since the election of Ma Ying-jeou as Taiwan’s president in 2008, the relationship across the Taiwan Strait—long viewed as one of Asia’s most volatile potential flashpoints—has experienced a remarkable détente. Whether the relationship has been truly transformed, however, remains an open question and the Taiwan Strait remains a central regional and global security issue. A return to turbulence in the Taiwan Strait could also add a new dimension of instability in the already tense maritime disputes in the East and South China Seas. While the relationship across the Taiwan Strait remains critically important, it is also changing rapidly, and the chapters in this volume present new thinking to help make sense of complex cross-Strait dynamics. Specifically, these essays explore different security and/or globalization dimensions of China-Taiwan ties as well as the globalization-security linkages that have emerged. As the balance of power in Asia shifts dramatically, several chapters in this volume explore how traditional security forces are evolving. At the same time, there are new dynamics emerging as a consequence of globalization forces, such as the tremendous economic and social integration across the Taiwan Strait, and several chapters in this volume consider some of these new problems. Finally, several chapters consider the often under-researched dynamics associated with the globalization/security interface such as cyber threats, transnational criminal networks and the security spill-over impact of production globalization. This book will of much interest to students of Chinese Politics, Asian Security, globalisation, diplomacy and International Relations.

Book Taiwan Straits

Download or read book Taiwan Straits written by Bruce A. Elleman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Taiwan Straits: Crisis in Asia and the Role of the U.S. Navy, historian Bruce Elleman surveys the situation that has led to the current tensions between China and Taiwan. Starting in 1949, the final phase of the civil war in China, which ended with Communist rule of the mainland and nationalist control of Taiwan, this work explores how the 100-mile wide passage of water, known as the Taiwan Strait has served as the geographic flashpoint between the two nations. Even though U.S. Navy destroyers have patrolled this body of water from 1950 to 1979, it has seen four crises—1954-55, 1958, 1962, and, after the withdrawal of the U.S. Navy, 1995-96—that threatened to push Taiwan and China to the brink of war. Notwithstanding the role of the United States in defusing cross-strait tensions for some three decades and the cold peace that has settled in since then, the Taiwan Strait continues to be a major source of anxiety for the region and the world. Taiwan Straits: Crisis in Asia and the Role of the U.S. Navy traces the evolution of this tension between the two nations, details the history of the crises between them, and brings this story forward into the present by considering continuing sources of conflict, present diplomatic efforts by the aggrieved nations, and other key interests—from the United States and Europe to other regional powers—and future possible outcomes in the ongoing struggle between China and Taiwan relations. Simply written and cogently argued, it is the ideal source for military personnel, diplomats, and scholars and student of the modern Far East.

Book If China Attacks Taiwan

Download or read book If China Attacks Taiwan written by Steve Tsang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-04-05 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a new analysis of the key issues facing Chinese policy makers in their approach towards Taiwan. This is one of the most tense and potentially explosive relationships in world politics. This book explains succinctly the impetus, the methods and the consequences if China is to use force, a prospect that has become greater following the return of President Chen Shui-bian to power in Taiwan for a second term in 2004. If China Attacks Taiwan shows how in reality there can be no real winner in such an eventuality and how the consequences would be dire not just for Taiwan and China, but East Asia as a whole. Whether China will use force depends ultimately on how its policy making apparatus assess potential US intervention, whether its armed forces can subdue Taiwan and counter US military involvement, as well as on its assessment of the likely consequences. Given the extremely high probability of American involvement this volume appeals to not only scholars and students working on China, its foreign policy and the security and prosperity of East Asia, but also to policy makers and journalists interested in China’s rise and its defense policy, Taiwan’s security and development, regional stability as well as US policy toward China and the East Asia region generally. This book is essential for understanding China’s efforts to achieve a ‘peaceful rise’, which requires it to transform itself into a global power not by the actual use of force but by diplomacy backed up by rapidly expanding military power. This book is an excellent resource for all students and scholars of military and security studies, Asian (China/Taiwan) studies and international relations

Book The U S China Military Scorecard

Download or read book The U S China Military Scorecard written by Eric Heginbotham and published by Rand Corporation. This book was released on 2015-09-14 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A RAND study analyzed Chinese and U.S. military capabilities in two scenarios (Taiwan and the Spratly Islands) from 1996 to 2017, finding that trends in most, but not all, areas run strongly against the United States. While U.S. aggregate power remains greater than China’s, distance and geography affect outcomes. China is capable of challenging U.S. military dominance on its immediate periphery—and its reach is likely to grow in the years ahead.

Book Geopolitics Military Modernisation and the Future of the Indo Pacific

Download or read book Geopolitics Military Modernisation and the Future of the Indo Pacific written by Bates Gill and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-02 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines to what extent geopolitics explains the current wave of force modernisation in the Indo-Pacific region. Examining the leading Indo-Pacific nations in terms of defence spending: the United States, China, India, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Taiwan, Singapore, Pakistan, Indonesia and Thailand, geopolitical principles are used to create hypotheses that can be tested against the military modernisation programmes of the major actors in the Indo-Pacific region. The book represents a bridge between reference works and the literature on international politics in the Indo-Pacific. The empirical chapters provide qualitative narratives that explore the force postures, military modernisation and procurement patterns of the cases, and assess why these nations’ military modernisation has followed particular courses and evaluate this evidence against the expectations of geopolitics and its rivals. This book will be a valuable addition to scholars, practitioners and, indeed, anyone interested in the future stability of one of the world’s most important and dynamic regions.

Book Naval Strategy and Operations in Narrow Seas

Download or read book Naval Strategy and Operations in Narrow Seas written by Milan N. Vego and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern marketing and advertising deeply influence the way we in which perceive the world and define our identity. Yet many of today's marketing and advertising practices are themselves products of earlier times. The development of brands, of advertising techniques and modern retailing are all associated with economic and business development of earlier periods. This collection of essays considers the emergence of modern marketing by examining product differentiation and brand creation, distribution and retailing strategies as well as advertising in a range of case studies covering the United States, Continental Europe and the United Kingdom. It highlights important innovations in marketing whilst underlining some surprising continuities, and is a valuable reference for undergraduate and postgraduate students of marketing and advertising.
