Book excerpt: Having received his M.A. from the Free University of West-Berlin, the author won a scholarship from the Volkswagen Foundation for two intensive Chinese language courses which strengthen his already growing interest in China. Finally realizing he'd never learn Chinese in a German environment, he decided to study on Taiwan. After traveling through the Soviet Union and Japan, he arrived in Taipei, ready and willing to accept the challenge of living in a totally different culture. His various experiences as a student and teacher slowly enlarged his awareness of the differing beliefs and values separating East and West and through this, becoming painfully conscience of his biases and limitations, thus also gaining critical insights as to both Chinese and his own culture. While this journey included manifold misunderstandings leading to very embarrassing situation, it eventually evolved into a worthwhile experience in cross-cultural learning.

Book Modern Chinese Writers

Download or read book Modern Chinese Writers written by Helmut Martin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gathers personal reflections on life and literature by 44 of China's leading authors. It aims to illustrate how Chinese society and its creative writing have supported, competed and fought with each other for the past 40 years and more. Much of what is revealed here is mundane, but the pressure of bringing art to social and political causes, indeed the universal pressure to survive, forges this collection into a very human document. The strengths and weaknesses of these essays offer a window on those of modern Chinese literature itself. Realism was the favoured literary doctrine of the day, and, reflecting this, most of these essays speak for themselves - about war, revolution, betrayal and commitment.

Book Place Identity and National Imagination in Post war Taiwan

Download or read book Place Identity and National Imagination in Post war Taiwan written by Bi-yu Chang and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-24 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the struggles for political and cultural hegemony that Taiwan has witnessed since the 1980s, the focal point in contesting narratives and the key battlefield in the political debates are primarily spatial and place-based. The major fault line appears to be a split between an imposed identity emphasizing cultural origin (China) and an emphasis on the recovery of place identity of ‘the local’ (Taiwan). Place, Identity and National Imagination in Postwar Taiwan explores the ever-present issue of identity in Taiwan from a spatial perspective, and focuses on the importance of, and the relationship between, state spatiality and identity formation. Taking postwar Taiwan as a case study, the book examines the ways in which the Kuomintang regime naturalized its political control, territorialized the island and created a nationalist geography. In so doing, it examines how, why and to what extent power is exercised through the place-making process and considers the relationship between official versions of ‘ROC geography’ and the islanders’ shifting perceptions of the ‘nation’. In turn, by addressing the relationship between the state and the imagined community, Bi-yu Chang establishes a dialogue between place and cultural identity to analyse the constant changing and shaping of Chinese and Taiwanese identity. With a diverse selection of case studies including cartographical development, geography education, territorial declaration and urban planning, this interdisciplinary book will have a broad appeal across Taiwan studies, geography, cultural studies, history and politics.

Book From Honto Jin to Bensheng Ren

Download or read book From Honto Jin to Bensheng Ren written by Shih-jung Tzeng and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2009-05-16 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to use numerous volumes of mostly unpublished diaries for examining issues of Taiwanese identity. Using the diaries of two Taiwanese intellectuals, the author examines how the Taiwanese national consciousness emerged and was reconstructed under the Japanese and Chinese Nationalist rule between 1920 and 1955, suggesting that a multi-dimensional Taiwanese national consciousness was created in the 1920s. Nevertheless, between 1937 and 1945, it was reconstructed by the imperial war mobilization. It then underwent a further reconstruction during and after the regime change from Japan to China, leading to the emergence of the bensheng ren (native Taiwanese) consciousness. The emerging international Cold War environment enabled the creation of a de facto independent state based on Taiwan-size governance, which had an impact on shaping the bensheng ren identity.

Book Indigenous Cultural Translation

Download or read book Indigenous Cultural Translation written by Darryl Sterk and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indigenous Cultural Translation is about the process that made it possible to film the 2011 Taiwanese blockbuster Seediq Bale in Seediq, an endangered indigenous language. Seediq Bale celebrates the headhunters who rebelled against or collaborated with the Japanese colonizers at or around a hill station called Musha starting on October 27, 1930, while this book celebrates the grandchildren of headhunters, rebels, and collaborators who translated the Mandarin-language screenplay into Seediq in central Taiwan nearly eighty years later. As a "thick description" of Seediq Bale, this book describes the translation process in detail, showing how the screenwriter included Mandarin translations of Seediq texts recorded during the Japanese era in his screenplay, and then how the Seediq translators backtranslated these texts into Seediq, changing them significantly. It argues that the translators made significant changes to these texts according to the consensus about traditional Seediq culture they have been building in modern Taiwan, and that this same consensus informs the interpretation of the Musha Incident and of Seediq culture that they articulated in their Mandarin-Seediq translation of the screenplay as a whole. The argument more generally is that in building cultural consensus, indigenous peoples like the Seediq are "translating" their traditions into alternative modernities in settler states around the world.

Book Taiwan s Imagined Geography

Download or read book Taiwan s Imagined Geography written by Emma Jinhua Teng and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Until 300 years ago, the Chinese considered Taiwan a “land beyond the seas,” a “ball of mud” inhabited by “naked and tattooed savages.” The incorporation of this island into the Qing empire in the seventeenth century and its evolution into a province by the late nineteenth century involved not only a reconsideration of imperial geography but also a reconceptualization of the Chinese domain. The annexation of Taiwan was only one incident in the much larger phenomenon of Qing expansionism into frontier areas that resulted in a doubling of the area controlled from Beijing and the creation of a multi-ethnic polity. The author argues that travelers’ accounts and pictures of frontiers such as Taiwan led to a change in the imagined geography of the empire. In representing distant lands and ethnically diverse peoples of the frontiers to audiences in China proper, these works transformed places once considered non-Chinese into familiar parts of the empire and thereby helped to naturalize Qing expansionism. By viewing Taiwan–China relations as a product of the history of Qing expansionism, the author contributes to our understanding of current political events in the region."
