Download or read book Short Tales by a Tall Pilot written by Jim Lewis and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2013 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When pilots sit around an airport or get together at a hotel lounge for beers or cocktails, they're almost certain to regale each other, and anyone else who will listen, with embellished tales of their greatest aviation exploits. The longer these stories continue, the more the similarities grow between the pilots' war stories and fish stories. As the night wears on, the exploits they share are likely to grow more and more elaborate and outlandish. In the spirit of those war stories, author Jim Lewis, who has worked as a professional pilot since the mid-sixties, offers his share of stories from his experiences. Many of these short stories are the result of mistakes in judgment, while others arose from deliberate decisions to proceed made from ignorance. A few were simply experiences that came with being a professional pilot, and two or three were blatant rule breaking. Lewis recalls landing in a soybean field, buzzing a nuclear submarine, flying under a bridge, running low on fuel, and tasting life in the cockpit of a jet liner. Some of his tales are humorous, while others take on a more dangerous nature. All of them, however, offer a lesson for others to learn.

Download or read book Shirley Muldowney s Tales from the Track written by Shirley Muldowney and published by Sports Publishing LLC. This book was released on 2005 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s, when the idea of a woman competing successfully with men in any form of motorsports was radical notion, a young woman from Schenectady, New York, began her singular quest to change the chauvinistic mindset that prevailed in professional drag racing. Shirley Muldowney not only broke the gender barrier in the National Hot Rod Association, but also completely rewrote the record books in Top Fuel Eliminator, the sport's quickest and fastest category. She was the first woman ever to receive a Top Fuel license from the NHRA, and none other than "Big Daddy" Don Garlits was one of the veteran drivers who signed off on it. Between 1977 and 1982, Muldowney won three NHRA Top Fuel championships--the first female ever to win a title in any professional motorsport--and added an AHRA Top Fuel championship to her resume, as well. She won the prestigious NHRA U.S. Nationals in 1982 and, before her retirement at the end of the 2003 season, had become one of the most recognized and celebrated race car drivers in history, male or female. She was recently inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in Novi, Michigan, and has been the subject of countless features in newspapers, magazines, and network television from coast to coast. Shirley Muldowney's Tales from the Track is an unabashed collection of stories, anecdotes, and opinions in her own unvarnished style of storytelling, laced with her straightforward, take-no-prisoners approach. She has spent her entire lifetime telling it like it is, standing up to the establishment, and refusing to do anything other than in her own way. Politically correct? Hardly. Readers are encouraged to strap themselves in when she shares her manytales. It's the whole truth and nothing but the truth according to the legendary Shirley Muldowney.

Growing up in post-World War II times, I was raised to go to college, play all kinds of sports well, and become an all-around good citizen. In telling my story, I discovered that most, if not all, of my air force assignments and units no longer exist, meaning my children and grandchildren will have no idea what I went through in my lifetime except for what I have written here. I feel that this is not only my story, it's a history, as I lived it, from 1943 through 2016.

Download or read book When Pigs Fly written by Rick Carnevali and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-01-24 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book chronicles the various methods the author inadvertently employed trying to kill himself during his life. On the farm, evil machinery attempted to have their way with him on several occasions. Later, while recklessly operating old Triumph and Ducati motorcycles, he nearly did the deed to the consternation of the folks. As a state patrolman he almost allowed several insane motorists to complete the job left unfinished by the tractors and bikes. He was forced to chase armed psychopaths the wrong way on the freeway and jerked other motorists out their side window after they tried to run him down. Thirteen years of investigating fatal accidents convinced the author to seek a less gruesome line of work so he took up flying police aircraft instead. As a novice flight instructor the author was attacked in the cockpit by a crazed student pilot who put the plane into a spin. While flying state patrol planes he survived engine failures, dead stick landings, air-borne dog fights with drug runners, and icing encounters so severe he still has nightmares. Flying state personnel and governors in the state's turbo-prop and turbo-jet aircraft had some crazy moments too. Hauling prisoners and serial killers around the country forced the author to always keep his sidearm close by. A narrow escape from an inverted flat spin in an AT6 Texan was the scariest of all. He flew corporate jets after retirement and describes some hairy moments locating radio-collared elk while flying over the Olympic Mountains. Releasing sterile insects over Jamaica was exciting especially after several million of them escaped into the cockpit and tried to gag him one morning. He feels quite fortunate to have survived all the close calls.
Download or read book Tales of the Flying Tigers written by Daniel Ford and published by Daniel Ford. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What God abandoned, these defended / And saved the sum of things for pay." In the bleak winter of 1941-1942, no American or British force could stem the tide in Southeast Asia, as the Philippines, Thailand, Malaya, and Singapore fell to the victorious Japanese. Only in Burma was there a ray of hope. There, over beleaguered Rangoon, a few dozen Americans clawed Japanese warplanes from the sky for a cash bounty from the Chinese government. Wearing mismatched uniforms, with Chinese insignia, and flying cast-off fighter planes, they did what no other air force seemed able to do, and won immortality as the Flying Tigers. Daniel Ford wrote "the definitive history" of the American Volunteer Group, as it was formally known. Here, he has collected five e-books about the Flying Tigers into an omnibus that details the AVG's planes, pilots, and history as remembered in the United States and in Japan. An essential collection for every admirer of the Flying Tigers. Revised and updated March 2022. "The AVG's first encounter with the Japanese Air Force over Kunming, China, on 20 December 1941 is often written about. The version Dan Ford presents here is probably the most complete picture extant." (First Blood for the Flying Tigers) "I can wholeheartedly recommend his work to anyone desiring insight into the early years of the JAAF" (Rising Sun Over Burma) "Very well written and full of new information about a fascinating time in our history" (100 Hawks for China) "A unique insight into how the Japanese appeared to the pilots meeting them, and how the AVG learned to deal with them" (AVG Confidential)
Download or read book Blue Chicago written by David Grazian and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2005-11-15 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The club is run-down and dimly lit. Onstage, a black singer croons and weeps of heartbreak, fighting back the tears. Wisps of smoke curl through the beam of a single spotlight illuminating the performer. For any music lover, that image captures the essence of an authentic experience of the blues. In Blue Chicago, David Grazian takes us inside the world of contemporary urban blues clubs to uncover how such images are manufactured and sold to music fans and audiences. Drawing on countless nights in dozens of blues clubs throughout Chicago, Grazian shows how this quest for authenticity has transformed the very shape of the blues experience. He explores the ways in which professional and amateur musicians, club owners, and city boosters define authenticity and dish it out to tourists and bar regulars. He also tracks the changing relations between race and the blues over the past several decades, including the increased frustrations of black musicians forced to slog through the same set of overplayed blues standards for mainly white audiences night after night. In the end, Grazian finds that authenticity lies in the eye of the beholder: a nocturnal fantasy to some, an essential way of life to others, and a frustrating burden to the rest. From B.L.U.E.S. and the Checkerboard Lounge to the Chicago Blues Festival itself, Grazian's gritty and often sobering tour in Blue Chicago shows us not what the blues is all about, but why we care so much about that question.
