Book excerpt: This luxurious volume showcases more than three hundred pieces designed by the imaginative French jeweler James Taffin de Givenchy, in his first book. "Jewelry is an emotional object that projects who you are. It takes artistry, intellect, and logic to make it," said James Taffin de Givenchy. Since launching his own jewelry business in 1996, Taffin has garnered a glowing reputation as a connoisseur of exotic gems and a designer who fuses Old World European glamour with pared-down modernity. His incredible bijoux are at once eclectic and whimsical, and embrace a symphony of colors, gems, and shapes. This opulent volume grants access to Taffin's world as the designer shares his inspirational references, intimate photographs of his studio, and hundreds of exquisite photographs of his lavish one-of-a-kind pieces that, like him, are, at once, sophisticated but lighthearted, extraordinary yet unpretentious. Taffin is recognized for both sculptural designs that augment the individuality of each gemstone and the unexpected and playful use of materials--from rubber to ceramic to the steel of recycled AK-47s. Capturing the designs of a passionate colorist, Taffin brings to life the inventive and bold combinations of diamonds, peridots, sapphires, mandarin garnets, and coral creations in a volume that is truly a feast for the eyes. Lavishly illustrated, this book gives fashion and design lovers a unique look at Taffin's vivid and creative works.

As the new highspeed railroute ‘StarTrack’ threatens a village, Taffin is forced to act in the face of corruption. Taffin on Balance is set against a background of the classic car trade, in which ‘barn finds’ are always newsworthy. It deals with manipulation, at Cabinet level, of a High-Speed rail route, and resistance to it at village level. Based on the Taffin books, Taffin on Balance continues to follow his life. He is now running ‘Muscle Motors’ with his long-time girlfriend Charlotte, restoring and selling classic American cars. The High-Speed rail route ‘StarTrack’ is threatening the village boundaries and some of the locals approach Taffin for ways of resisting it. He tells them there is nothing he can do, but events draw him in anyway. It seems Taffin’s past is close behind. Someone is trying to put ‘Muscle Motors’ out of business and it soon becomes clear that the threat is well financed, the motive personal and the intention deadly. Taffin is forced to revert to his old skills as he faces corruption that reaches from his home territory into the heart of government.

Book Rental Housing

  • Author : Ira Gary Peppercorn
  • Publisher : World Bank Publications
  • Release : 2013-03-20
  • ISBN : 0821396552
  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book Rental Housing written by Ira Gary Peppercorn and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2013-03-20 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The discussion of where people live and how people pay for their housing has undergone a significant shift. Until the mortgage crisis erupted in 2008, the housing policy of most nations focused on increasing home ownership. There had been very little discussion about rental housing, less about social housing, and virtually none about public housing. The mortgage crisis showed the challenges inherent in pushing for home ownership for all. With homes going into foreclosure and with credit tightening in many countries, the need for rental housing increased dramatically. However, most countries are only beginning to consider supporting rental housing as a shelter option. This book is an effort to bring rental housing to the forefront of the housing agenda and to provide general guidance to policy makers. The information it provides can assist key players in housing markets--government officials, private rental property owners, financiers, and nongovernmental organizations--in including rental housing as a critical housing option and in having an informed discussion on how best to stimulate this sector.

Book Guncrank Diaries

Download or read book Guncrank Diaries written by John Connor and published by . This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complete collection of John Connor's original Guncrank Diaries is all right here including excuses, alibis, pithy observations and general ephus. John Connor is a soldier, cop, father, lover of dogs, protector of the defenseless, guardian of what's right - and a fierce foe of what's wrong. He's fought evil, brutality and tyranny in the jungles of Vietnam, as a cop on the city streets of a major Southern California city, and in a host of god-forsaken places around the world. His friends often have very unusual names, and all remain fiercely loyal - and for very good reasons. This book isn't about what you think, either. Not at all. It's not just simply a series of columns John wrote for the pages of American Handgunner Magazine. They're stories, yes, but each has a meaning stronger than the words on the paper convey. Each one will drag deep-rooted, powerful memories from deep within you about things that were, or might have been. The effect this modest book will have on you won't buff out easily. Be prepared to be changed. What readers say about Guncrank Diaries: "Darn it Connor, stop it-stop it-stop it... my old eyes are not as tough as they used to be. Your story of the custom colt was just wonderful. I forwarded it to my wife ... now her eyes are leaking too. so just stop it!" Gary M. "I don't give a damn if the writer of Guncrank is or was a super secret special forces tacti-cool bad ass or if he was a truck driver or a mess sergeant. I like what he writes. I enjoy it because it is entertaining. And its usually just plain funny. So whoever you are thanks, I appreciate what your do or did." Just an Army Guy "Like fine wine, Connor's insights age well and remain cogent. More please." Doc H

Book Priests of the French Revolution

Download or read book Priests of the French Revolution written by Joseph F. Byrnes and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-02-05 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 115,000 priests on French territory in 1789 belonged to an evolving tradition of priesthood. The challenge of making sense of the Christian tradition can be formidable in any era, but this was especially true for those priests required at the very beginning of 1791 to take an oath of loyalty to the new government—and thereby accept the religious reforms promoted in a new Civil Constitution of the Clergy. More than half did so at the beginning, and those who were subsequently consecrated bishops became the new official hierarchy of France. In Priests of the French Revolution, Joseph Byrnes shows how these priests and bishops who embraced the Revolution creatively followed or destructively rejected traditional versions of priestly ministry. Their writings, public testimony, and recorded private confidences furnish the story of a national Catholic church. This is a history of the religious attitudes and psychological experiences underpinning the behavior of representative bishops and priests. Byrnes plays individual ideologies against group action, and religious teachings against political action, to produce a balanced story of saints and renegades within a Catholic tradition.

Book Lawmen of the Old West Unmasked

Download or read book Lawmen of the Old West Unmasked written by Jesse Wolf Hardin and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historian Author Jesse Hardin gives us a detailed look at the complex lives of 11 of the most fascinating Sheriffs and Marshals of the historic American West – the good, the bad, and the conflicted. Find a spot by the fire, for a lyrical journey into lesser known history, unmasking the popular hero Wyatt Earp as the con-artist and pimp he really was, demonstrably courageous but a total scoundrel... and by singing the praises of the truly honorable and heroic “men behind the badge” whose deeds so often go unsung:Elfego Baca, Wyatt Earp, Harry Morse, Bucky O'Neill, John Joshua Webb, Wild Bill Hickok, Pat Garrett, Burton Mossman, George Scarborough, Bat Masterson, and Bear River Tom SmithBooks and movies have long painted the West in a certain way, with a black and white version of history, wholly good guys versus the purely evil. Only trouble is, “it didn't happen thataway, hoss!” From Hardin's Preface:“Lawmen, even the most amazingly brave of them, embody a mix of compassion and prejudice, generosity and avarice. None are the complete good guy heroes that we once read comic books about or idolized on the silver screen. Nor were even the worst of them likely to be totally bad as some revisionists insist. Like all humans, they sometimes did things they shouldn't have, while other times gambling with their safety in order to save a stranger's life. It's only once we cease the lionizing and demonizing – the cynical sniping and blind worshipping – that we can look again at these fascinating personas from the 19th and 20th Centuries for the incredibly complex individuals they were, people with common human traits and troubles doing extraordinary and occasionally incredible things with an undeniable intensity of character.”This realistic approach doesn't rob us of heroes, what it does is help show us whose actions were truly admirable, and helps us define for ourselves the standards of just action and a life worthy of emulation. Hardin's stories not only take us back to the days of old but give us thought about how we live our own lives, and the future we want to create and protect. As he writes:“I hope that it serves to not only inform you about times and deeds past, but also to inspire you in the now – kickstarting your imagination and putting your ideas to the test, getting you up and off of your chairs and outside where you can act out your own valued missions, and attempt the heroic. And maybe affirming your decision to keep an old shotgun in the closet or under the bed, since opposing injustice and doing good is the job of every citizen even in a land with a zillion rules and laws... whether we work in law enforcement or take pride in being social outlaws. ”“Hardin's ability to draw the reader's mind into deeper contemplation is one of the hallmarks of a great historical work.” –Boge Quinn, GunBlast.com Hardin finds that both the best and worst of the old time lawmen had something in common: they were all darn interesting – determined, risking their lives for one thing or another, living the great adventure.“It is not the timid, the self-doubting and retiring whose experiences and efforts will be remembered,” Hardin concludes. “It is the living of interesting, passion filled, highly driven lives that makes the tales of these eleven lawmen so memorable, and is that which can make our own lived stories worth retelling.”“Hardin has a fascinating style.... almost lyrical. His perspective on the Old West is both romantic and dramatic” –Ned Schwing, Gun Digest Books“Read the truth about these 11 Old West lawmen and enjoy real history!” –John Taffin
